A favorite activity is a 45 minute hike up to the spectacular geological dike formations just behind the cabin, where you'll overlook a secluded valley...take a picnic lunch and a book for a perfect afternoon.
Or take a 10 minute walk into Cuchara, where you'll step back in time. Enjoy live music at the Dog Bar or have an elegant dinner at the Timbers restaurant, play a round of putt putt golf or browse the shops for treasures.
Just across Hiway 12 you'll find trout fishing at Bear and Blue Lakes or just meander the lovely hike between the lakes. Drive up to Cucharas Pass, where the adventurous can hike West Spanish Peak.
A lovely day trip is 2+ hours to Taos for shopping, lunch, more shopping, and back to the cabin by dark. Or experience a ride on the old time Cumbres/Toltec narrow gauge railroad, also on the road to Taos.
Back at the cabin, relax and enjoy the hummingbirds off the deck, the sound of the river, and possibly a bear siting. There will be more to do tomorrow!

We just returned home from our wonderful week in Cuchara. What a fabulous time we had! My husband and I, along with my daughter and our two grandsons absolutely loved your cabin. It was perfect for the five of us and met all of our needs. We really appreciated how clean and well-equipped it was. We truly felt at home there all week. As we were leaving at 6:30 this morning, our 8 year old grandson (seconded by his 11 year old brother) said: “We need to write the owners a thank you note to let them know how much we loved it here.” Since we were getting into the car at that time, I promised them that I was already planning to e-mail you and I would say “Thank you” for them as well as the three adults.
We enjoyed watching the hummingbirds every day as well as seeing deer roaming the neighborhood each morning. I think all of us were a little disappointed that we never saw a bear – although none of us wanted to meet one up close and personal. It was heavenly to go to sleep each night with the soothing sounds of the river running below the cabin. Since we had two major thunderstorms – Friday and Saturday afternoons – the water was really rushing. In spite of the heavy downpours, we felt safe & secure inside the cabin. We enjoyed watching the clouds, rain, and even the lightning in the mountains from the great windows in the living room.
The location of your cabin was perfect for us – quiet and somewhat isolated, yet very easy to get to and from where we wanted to go. We enjoyed many hikes, fishing, events at the Community Center, horseback riding and barbeque at Yellow Pine Ranch, a day trip to the Sand Dunes, and many visits with all our friends who were in the Cuchara area at the same time we were.
Thank you so much for providing such a super home for our week in Cuchara. We’re already trying to determine when we might be able to visit again, and we all agreed we would definitely want to rent your cabin again.
I am an interior designer from Austin and enjoy hiking, reading and continuing to make our cabin as cozy and inviting as possible.
Our family fell in love with this wonderful valley in the 1950's and we are thrilled to now have this mountain getaway. Being from Texas, there's nothing like the cool mountains in the summer. Every visit we discover another treasure in the quaint towns of Cuchara and La Veta, not to mention the woods, streams and lakes. We hope you will too.
