Welcome to our log cabin in the picturesque Cucharas River Valley, surrounded by San Isabel National Forest, conveniently off Hiway 12, Scenic Hiway of Legends.
Enjoy the charming towns of Cucharas & La Veta just down the road, play a few rounds at the Grandote Golf Course, designed by Tom Weiskopf, hike numerous mountain trails, fish Bear & Blue Lakes, or put your feet up on the deck and watch the sunset over the valley.
From our snug cabin, recently updated, you will hear the Cucharas River rushing just below the property. We provide a plush full bed with adjoining full bath in bedroom 1, a plush queen bed in bedroom 2, and a plush queen bed and set of bunk beds in the 3rd bedroom, just across from the 2nd full bath. A fully stocked, spacious kitchen, large table for meals & games, beautiful stone fireplace and comfy furniture awaits. A full size washer & dryer are conveniently located between bedrooms.
A flat screen TV with DVD only (no TV service) and video library are provided, as well as puzzles, books and games. Free WiFi is available in Cuchara.
A favorite activity is a 45 minute hike up to the spectacular geological dike formations just behind the cabin, where you'll overlook a secluded valley...take a picnic lunch and a book for a perfect afternoon.
Or take a 10 minute walk into Cuchara, where you'll step back in time. Enjoy live music at the Dog Bar or have an elegant dinner at the Timbers restaurant, play a round of putt putt golf or browse the shops for treasures.
Just across Hiway 12 you'll find trout fishing at Bear and Blue Lakes or just meander the lovely hike between the lakes. Drive up to Cucharas Pass, where the adventurous can hike West Spanish Peak.
A lovely day trip is 2+ hours to Taos for shopping, lunch, more shopping, and back to the cabin by dark. Or experience a ride on the old time Cumbres/Toltec narrow gauge railroad, also on the road to Taos.
Back at the cabin, relax and enjoy the hummingbirds off the deck, the sound of the river, and possibly a bear siting. There will be more to do tomorrow!

I am an interior designer from Austin and enjoy hiking, reading and continuing to make our cabin as cozy and inviting as possible.
Janet Balser purchased this cabin in 2011
Our family fell in love with this wonderful valley in the 1950's and we are thrilled to now have this mountain getaway. Being from Texas, there's nothing like the cool mountains in the summer. Every visit we discover another treasure in the quaint towns of Cuchara and La Veta, not to mention the woods, streams and lakes. We hope you will too.
We just returned home from our wonderful week in Cuchara. What a fabulous time we had! My husband and I, along with my daughter and our two grandsons absolutely loved your cabin. It was perfect for the five of us and met all of our needs. We really appreciated how clean and well-equipped it was. We truly felt at home there all week. As we were leaving at 6:30 this morning, our 8 year old grandson (seconded by his 11 year old brother) said: “We need to write the owners a thank you note to let them know how much we loved it here.” Since we were getting into the car at that time, I promised them that I was already planning to e-mail you and I would say “Thank you” for them as well as the three adults.
We enjoyed watching the hummingbirds every day as well as seeing deer roaming the neighborhood each morning. I think all of us were a little disappointed that we never saw a bear – although none of us wanted to meet one up close and personal. It was heavenly to go to sleep each night with the soothing sounds of the river running below the cabin. Since we had two major thunderstorms – Friday and Saturday afternoons – the water was really rushing. In spite of the heavy downpours, we felt safe & secure inside the cabin. We enjoyed watching the clouds, rain, and even the lightning in the mountains from the great windows in the living room.
The location of your cabin was perfect for us – quiet and somewhat isolated, yet very easy to get to and from where we wanted to go. We enjoyed many hikes, fishing, events at the Community Center, horseback riding and barbeque at Yellow Pine Ranch, a day trip to the Sand Dunes, and many visits with all our friends who were in the Cuchara area at the same time we were.
Thank you so much for providing such a super home for our week in Cuchara. We’re already trying to determine when we might be able to visit again, and we all agreed we would definitely want to rent your cabin again.
This cabin had everything we needed starting with basic amenities to comfort and space. It was a good sized cabin to fit us all comfortably. Very very clean!! Perfect location, almost hidden in the trees. Our kids had lots of area to explore and play. The back patio was very large and beautiful! We will definitely be back!
WE HAD THE MOST AMAZING TIME IN CUCHARA(AND SURROUNDING AREAS). WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE CABIN. IT WAS INCREDIBLY CLEAN. IT HAD ALL ITEMS YOU WOULD NEED TO LIVE, BATH, COOK, CLEAN, ETC.... THE WASHER AND DRYER CAME IN VERY HANDY SINCE WE WERE HIKINH, ROCK CLIMBING, HORSEBACK RIDING, RAFTING AND FISHING - WE DEFINITELY NEEDED TO WASH OUR CLOTHES. EVEN AFTER 10 DAYS WE WERE NOT READY TO LEAVE!!! WEATHER WAS PERFECT(AS USUAL). SPENT MANY DAYS AND NIGHTS AT THE DOG BAR SINCE THEY HAD FREE WIFI!! ALREADY LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEAR!!!!
We had a lovely time staying at this cabin in Cuchara. The house is comfortable and very clean. The twin beds are a bit small -- they would work fine for younger kids but were not so great for teenagers. The town of Cuchara is small, but charming. Our teenagers really like the miniature golf course. The mushrooms at The Timbers are superb. There is a nice hike close to the house where you can walk up to see the dikes (you have to make your own path at the top of the trail, but it was not hard to do). The drive to Trinidad is really beautiful, but there isn't much to do in Trinidad -- just a few stores and a few art galleries. The lakes along the way are beautiful and its worth taking a quick detour off the main road to see the mining town of Cokedale. My favorite activity was sitting on the lovely porch reading while I listened to the flow of the river.
After a few days hiking in the Sangre de Cristo range, this cabin was the perfect place to recuperate. It was very convenient to reach, easily fit our group size, and offered all the amenities we needed. The scenery was spectacular and Janet was great to work with. It made our trip a tremendous success and I hope to return soon.
Enjoyed sitting on the deck and listening to the Cucharas River. Glad there were fans available in the bedrooms, since the cabin does not have air conditioning. Beds were comfortable. Easy access for fishing at Blue Lake, Bear Lake and North Lake. Saw a lot of mule deer and one elk on the way up to Cordova Pass. Cell phone coverage in the area was not very good for us.
We recently stayed at the cabin with friends and had a great time. It was comfortable with plenty of room. For 3 couples it was perfect with 3 bedrooms.
The cabin was clean with all the amenities of home. It is a convenient location, close to Cuchara and the lakes.
We enjoyed the hummingbirds on the deck.
Janet was great and good to work with.
I would highly recommend staying here.
