Herb Horil purchased this apartment in 1982

Herb's Home was perfect for our NOLA vacation. The house is located in a picturesque New Orleans neighborhood walking distance to most places, including restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops AND just a 5 min. walk to Jazz Fest which was amazing to be so close to all of the action. We took short taxi's rides to all of our favorite Music Halls, hung out in the back yard and really enjoyed the place!!! Getting to know Herb was awesome too, he knows everything about the city and it was really helpful to have some local advice.
We're no different from all of the other 5-star reviews for this studio -- this place is just perfect in every way.
Perfect location -- within 2 miles to everything you'll want to do while you visit
Perfect hospitality -- Herb has thought of everything, from soap & shampoo & conditioner, to coffee & a bowl of fresh fruit & a package of English muffins to get us started in the mornings
Perfect setting -- very tastefully decorated, and a gorgeous place to relax after a day of sight-seeing
Perfect host -- he answered a bunch of questions for us, gave us great rec's, greeted us upon our arrival, etc.
We visited for 3.5 days over our Spring Break (my fiancé is a professor at a university) and would highly recommend not only visiting NOLA, but staying with Herb at this property. We ended-up renting a car and are glad we did -- found cheap parking at the Shops on Canal for the days we drove to the French Quarter and Marigny, and there is abundant street-parking at Herb's and in the Garden District & Carrollton.
My husband and I are regular visitors to NOLA and have stayed at various VRBO properties around the city and the Lagniappe Suite is by far the cleanest, best appointed, and most convenient in this price range - plus it comes with the added bonus of Herb, the nicest host you could ever hope for - he even brought us fresh fruit during our stay!! Herb's Lagniappe Suite is in the beautiful Esplanade Ridge neighborhood and is within walking distance to great restaurants, coffee shops, a neighborhood grocery store, and NOLA's lovely City Park. The location is quiet and the King sized bed is really comfy, so you're sure to get a good night's rest. The Suite comes equipped with everything a couple needs for a wonderful stay in our favorite city. Thanks Herb!
This was our first visit to New Orleans. Also our first time using VRBO. I can honestly say we were very nervous about renting , but it turned out to be a wonderful experience! Our host Herb was just fantastic! The night before we were to arrive in NOLA, we had gotten stranded during an ice storm in Alabama on I-65, and spent the night sleeping in our car, freezing!! The next morning we were slowly able to inch along.. so we arrived at Herb's rental late in the afternoon, after being in the car for 33 hours straight! Imagine our surprise to find a lovely studio, with snacks, fresh fruit, drinks, and a bottle of wine for our anniversary, with a note from Herb. He gave us some time to unpack, ( and bathe!), then came down to welcome us. He is the perfect southern gentleman, and the whole week during our stay, gave us great info about things to do and where to eat, he even gave us a city tour as he dropped us off at the French Quarter one evening. Not many people would do that for their guests!! He made sure we had everything we needed, and then some! He even delivered a yummy fruit salad for us to enjoy. The studio flat was very well stocked with everything you needed. It is beautifully decorated, and feels very much like a home. Very warm and welcoming. It is within walking distance of many nice restaurants, a coffee shop, and two markets for any food or drug store items you may have wanted. My one complaint wherever we stay somewhere is usually not enough hot water, not enough towels, and poor bathroom lighting. Not so at Herb's place!! Plenty of hot water, towels, and a bathroom bright enough to put your make-up on! Hurrah!! Like others have said, you really can get around without a car when staying here. But, if you have your car....no worries..plenty of street parking right in front of the house. My husband and I definitely would recommend staying here for your visit to this great city!!
Everything was absolutely perfect for us. It was quiet, well furnished, great location. Since we are big walkers we were happy to walk 20 mins. to the Canal Streecar at the City Park location which took us all the way downtown. Herb could not be a better host, he has thought of everything and put it in the apartment.
We have enjoyed using VRBO to book several properties during visits across the US, usually for longer stays. We highly recommend this property; it is in a wonderful neighborhood, and offers a great value, especially when you consider that the posted nightly rate includes taxes, and cleaning fee. This was our first time visiting New Orleans. Herb’s place proved to be the perfect spot for our introduction to this wonderful city. As others have stated Herb is the perfect host, helpful, yet unobtrusive. He was generous in providing a lift to a nearby Winn Dixie grocery store when we arrived too late to shop at the local market. He also provided wonderful tips on places to visit dine and enjoy some world class entertainment. The apartment was well equipped, clean and cozy. During our trip in late December the weather on a few evenings dipped into the 30’s, this combined with the high humidity made for penetrating cold temps. No worries as the apartment’s heater provided ample warmth indoors. Beyond the heater, everything in the space functioned perfectly. We enjoyed the Wifi, cable TV and kitchen. Each morning we cooked breakfast and also prepared a few evening meals during our stay. With two local markets within walking distance and the #91 bus stop across the street it was not necessary to have a car while visiting. Despite this we ended up renting a car when we came across a great deal for the weekend. The car ended up saving us some time during our side trips to Rock-n-Bowl and the Garden District. One word of caution, don’t bother driving into the French Quarter, parking is currently $35 per 4hrs in the city lots and spots are hard to come by on the weekends. The bus in contrast offers a clean 10min trip and runs $1.25 each way, or $3.00 for a day pass (purchased from bus driver). We purchased the day pass, took the bus into the French Quarter then hopped a cable car to travel into the Garden District. Herb’s suggestion to sample lunch at Commanders Palace during a weekday provided us with a dining experience that we will remember for a long time. All of their rewards and accolades are well deserved. That said you won’t need to travel far for a great meal, Café Degas, Café Lola’s, the Santa Fe Restaurant, CC’s and Fair Grind coffee all provide excellent meals and were a short 10-15 minute walk away. We also took the 20 minute walk up to City Park to enjoy the Modern Art Museum and gardens. Our week was full of wonderful memories and we look forward to a
Our second time staying at Herbs rental property. Herb is the quintessential NOLA host! The studio has everything you need to enjoy yourself. It's just a short trip to the quarter by taxi or Herb, but is located in a quite residential neighborhood which is a nice break from the chaos :)
Thanks again for everything Herb. Can't wait to come back in 2015!
Walking distance to several New Orleans festivals including the Jazz and Heritage Festival and Voodoo Festival. Also close to City Park which includes the Carousel Gardens Amusement Park & Storyland, boat & bike rentals, the Botanical Gardens, the Bestoff Sculpture Garden, Golf, Tennis, Canoeing, Parkway Tavern Cafe, NOLA City Bark, Equest Farm, New Orleans Museum of Art and the free and awesome Sculpture Garden (a must-see!)
