My husband and I had a fabulous time. This vacation was the best and most relaxing vacation we have ever had. I can't wait to go back and rent one of the larger properties.
Check-in: Was smooth. Recommendation: Go directly to the Carlos Jeep main office (if coming from the airport). Do not wait at the airport counter.
Room: The pics do not do this rental justice. Feels like a hotel suite with a private entrance. It is equipped with high quality details from the awesome thick memory foam mattress to the rainfall shower head, and the Wamsutta towels and silky soft high tc sheets. The views from the room balcony are so peaceful and relaxing. Though there are other rentals nearby, you still have a sense of privacy. (BYOT=Bring your own toiletries).
Culebra Island Experience: Wake up in the morning to nature at it's finest. I got to hang out on the hamac on the balcony, and enjoy my morning listening to the birds singing. Be forewarned to bring insect spray and sunblock.
We checked out Flamenco Beach, Zoni Beach and Melones Beach. Flamenco and Zoni are the most popular. At Flamenco you can explore and also see 2 (out of 5) old military tanks there. Zoni is a nice place to avoid the crowds and see the sea turtle preservations along the beach. Melones Beach is not for sunbathing. It is a quiet beach where you can picnic and read a book by the water or play a few games of dominoes. Take a drive up the hills by Melones and you will see some spectular views and beautiful homes.
Places to eat: Our favorite restaurant on the island is Dinghy Dock. Good eats and good service. At night the vibe is upbeat and yet still relaxing. Expect a wait at dinner time. A couple of other places to check out are El Eden and Mamacitas. But for cheap eats, we highly recommend kiosk #5 at Flamenco Beach; must try the Chapin fish empanadas.
Recommendations: Should rent a vehicle. The hill where the rental is located is a steep one. We rented a golf cart; feels like you're going down a roller coaster, and you feel the bumps on the road when traveling around. If that's not your thing, rent a jeep. Don't advise on the scooters for this property. Gas up your vehicle the night before leaving. The long line in the morning is least to be desired and run the chance of the gas station running out of gas. Almost happened to us.
This place is absolutely neat, sitting upon the highest point(maybe?) on the island. You will get an magnificent view. The room is clean and quite spacious, and has almost everything you need, except for toiletries. Bring your own!
Always remember to rent a vehicle on the island. Though it is only a 20-min walk to the town, you don't want to climb up and down that big ramp everyday.
The views were amazing and Culebra is gorgeous. However, the host is Carlos Jeep Rental and they are more experienced with renting jeeps than accommodations. Here are some problems we experienced:
1) Arriving in the evening, they failed to give us a map to the island. The place is located on top of a mountain that's not easy to find if you don't know the island well. We had no water to drink and could not find the supermarket the first night. Always provide a map of Culebra for new tourists to the island as soon as they arrive! Some water would be nice, too.
2) No shampoo or soap was provided. This is not something we wanted to worry about upon arrival.
3) Extra towels were never provided.
4) Water is trucked in to this place. One day after spending the whole day at the beach, the units ran out of water so we could not take showers. We had to sit and wait for someone to come and fill up the water tank before we could rinse the sand and salt water off our bodies.
5. There is no safe to store valuables.
6. There is no designated place to take out trash. We just put ours in the neighbor's bin.
7. You need a Jeep to get up to this place. It's a steep and rough ride.
This property is beautiful. The description is accurate. One of the most beautiful views...that alone is worth it! The property sits on top of a steep hill so renting a jeep is a good idea. This apt is on the lower level; there is a paved walkway but it is steep. A little bit hard for those that are older and have joint problems. I'm already planning my next trip to Culebra. There are several cottages nearby but you still feel a sense of privacy.
