The city of Lucca attracts tourists from around the world to its historic sights. The Duomo Cathedral, St. Michael's Church and the streets and squares of Old Town are favorite destinations. A three mile series of ramparts, complete with eleven bastions and four gateways was erected around the city in the 16th and 17th centuries for protection. It's fun for the energetic to walk the lengthof this wall. Il Castello is a charming villa situated on a high hill outside Lucca among olive groves and shadowy chestnut trees. The house was built in 1576 in conjunction with a huge water mill erected over the brook that still runs next to the house. It was formerly owned by an abbey. You will be delighted to discover a great variety of flowers, foliage, and aromatic herbs in the terraced gardens. There is a pergola for dining al fresco, a barbeque, and a traditional wood oven for pizza also in the garden area. The comfortable and cozy house is well-kept and decorated with authentic antiques. The old traditional country furniture maintains its charm, while its recent renovation offers the comfort and convenience of modern appliances and amenities. There is a lovely pool shared with the owner who lives in the restored barn nearby. Il Castello is a villa for those who are looking for privacy, beauty, and charming atmosphere.
The main floor of Il Castello includes an entrance, a living room with a fireplace and telephone, and a very large traditional country kitchen equipped with stove, oven, refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, a nice eating area, and a bathroom with a shower. The second floor has a double bedroom with a fireplace, another double bedroom, a twin bedroom, and a bathroom with a shower. In the basement there is a double bedroom and a bathroom with a shower as well as a separate laundry room with a washing machine. Here in the heart of one of many wine-producing areas of Italy, your home-away-from-home is an ideal location for short jaunts to the most renowned sites of Tuscany. Florence is less than an hour away by car, and Forte dei Marmi for golf and the famous beaches of the Medtiterranean only a half hour. Pietrasanta, the artists' town is a must see.
