LUXURILAKE SUPERIOR HOME WITH PRIVATE BEACH, AMAZING VIEWS

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Lutsen - Grey Havens

House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and designed and built by Lutsen architect Bruce Carmen, Grey Havens sits on 250 feet of private Lake Superior shoreline.

The house is furnished in mission style for a luxurious yet comfortable feel. Art scattered throughout the home, much of it by local artists, reflects the wilderness surrounding you. The open floor plan allows for cooking, dining and relaxing all with amazing Lake Superior views.

The main living area has a Carlton Peak rock fireplace and a 50' flat screen t.v. with both dvd and vcr players for evening movies. The stereo system includes a plug-in for your iPod. Two comfortable swivel recliners in the bay window let you nap while being lulled by the waves crashing on the shore.

Up a spiral stairs and overlooking the living area is a loft full of books, dvd and vcr movies, and a couch. Up another spiral stairs and you arrive in the turret with spectacular views of the lake and a reflecting telescope. From there you step out onto the rooftop deck which is perfect for star-gazing and watching the Northern Lights.

Or maybe you prefer to wander down to the lake to skip stones on your own private beach or fish off the ledgerock shore. Hot dogs and s'mores at the waterfront fire pit creates fun and memories for all ages.

You can create your own gourmet meals in the fully equipped kitchen using the JennAire stove with grill and other amenities. Or grill outside on the Weber!

The master bedroom is a special retreat with two walls of windows for stunning lake views. The attached bathroom has its own soaking tub and separate shower.

The first guest bedroom reflects the voyageur heritage of the North Shore. It's attached bathroom has whimsical wall art of spruce trees, bringing the surrounding forest inside. The second guest bedroom focuses on the art of Bev Doolittle with her portrayals of the hidden denizens of the birch forests. In the attached bathroom look out the window to find the trees which posed for the birch wall paintings!

Grey Havens is only minutes from Lutsen Ski Resort, with downhill skiing, snowboarding, and in summer, the Alpine Slide. Even closer is the 27 hole Lutsen National Golf Course. Miles of cross country ski trails start just across the road. Hiking in the beautiful state parks along Highway 61 is spectacular whatever the season. Just 20 minutes to the East is Grand Marais, an artist colony and charming town full of shops and restaurants to keep you entertained whatever the weather.

Grey Havens was a harbor for the highest and most powerful of the Elves in Tolkien's story of the Middle Kingdom. It was from Grey Havens that the Elves set sail for other enchanted lands. A place of magic and beauty, Grey Havens was a refuge for the Fellowship of the Ring and is our refuge for the soul.

We are city dwellers who have always loved the outdoors. When our children were young, we went camping and traveled all over the country. Once they were grown and we had four granddaughters, we decided a place where we could all be together and celebrate family events was important. We now split our time between Minneapolis and Lutsen, so we get to enjoy the best of both worlds.

The Owner purchased this house in 1993

We fell in love with the North Shore the very first time we visited. After years of renting other people’s homes, we decided we wanted our own piece of paradise. We purchased 1.5 acres right on Lake Superior in Lutsen and built our home with local architect and builder Bruce Carmen.

We love the many faces of the Lake, from smooth as glass to the powerful winter storms. The surrounding forest is full of wonderful birch and spruce trees not to mention the abundant wildlife -- deer, chipmunks, eagles, owls, and the occasional bear or wolf.

We are avid hikers and have been all over the wonderful state parks that line Highway 61. Trips into Canada to Fort William and Thunder Bay or up into the Boundary Waters at Ely always are adventures of discovery.

As well as hiking, we love to eat! When not making gourmet meals in our own kitchen, we have found numerous, sometimes hidden, restaurants serving everything from venison to burgers to four star cuisine.

As amateur astronomers, we built our house with a turret and rooftop deck. There is nothing more awe inspiring than lying on the deck looking at the Milky Way or finding the North Star or identifying constellations on a warm summer night. Or bundling up and watching the shimmering Northern Lights on a fall or winter evening.

There simply is no better place to relax and enjoy Nature in all her glory than our retreat on the North Shore.

BEAUTIFUL VIEWS BUT........

  • 2 out of 5
This review is being submitted by four seasoned VRBO users. All of us frequently use
the website for vacation rentals and highly depend on the opinions of the property
guests.
Let us begin by saying the views from this property are spectacular! The pictures on the
website accurately portray the inside and outside of the home. It is well located
geographically; a short drive to Lutsen (for dining and skiing) and Grand Marais. You
will de?nitely hear road noise as it is close to Hwy 61.
However, compared to the dozens of VRBOs we have all rented, we were collectively
very disappointed in the cleanliness of the home itself and took pictures to send to the
owner, whose response was equally disappointing and defensive. This would not have
been a 1/2 hour job or covered by a “once over” by any of our standards and none of us
felt like putting up with a cleaning crew when one couple had driven 6 hours to get
there. Be aware that “television” (listed as an amenity) means you can watch a DVD,
no news or football games. There is no cable. Also, you have to bus your garbage
across the road and pay to have it disposed of before you leave or you will be ?ned.
There is no use of the washer/dryer and you are allowed one set of towels for 3 days.
Lastly, let me say that NONE of us have ever found it necessary to write a negative
review of the many properties we have rented. There are a lot of options on the North
Shore for $369/night; we recommend you look further.

Owner's Response: We specifically ask all our guests to immediately contact our cleaning/maintenance group upon arrival at our home if anything is not to their liking. These renters did not inform us of their concerns until after they left, so we had no opportunity to correct the cleaning conditions they complained about. I apologized to them and immediately notified the cleaners to correct the conditions.
The pictures I was sent showed dust under the microwave and under a lamp in a bedroom, a spider web, and three dead insects. Our home is in the middle of the woods and particularly in the Fall, critters try to get in somewhere warm for the winter. The house had been cleaned the day before they arrived, but every time you open a door, bugs can get in. In the cooler months, we do have a problem with dead flies since they make persistent efforts to get inside. From the pictures they sent, it would have taken very little time for our cleaners to correct the problems, probably less than half an hour.
In our listing of amenities, we do not list cable TV since it is not available in Lutsen. We do not list a washer/dryer being available. A full set of towels is provided for each guest and had they asked for more, our cleaning crew would have provided them. The disposal of garbage is clearly spelled out in the Rental Agreement we have all guests sign before confirming their reservation.
We are unhappy these guests had an unpleasant experience renting our home. By notifying us in a timely manner, we could have made their experience a happy one, our goal with all our guests.

BEAUTIFUL AND PRIVATE

  • 5 out of 5
This property is gorgeous inside and out and the privacy is amazing - both at the house and down at the lake - not a soul or structure in sight! Wonderful amenities! Owner was easy and polite for correspondence or questions. No washer/dryer and no cell service nor WiFi - but unplug and enjoy! Some highway noise from 61, but that's hard to get away from on the North Shore.... Overall, a very wonderful location and highly recommended for couples or families.

NOT SURE WHAT ELSE YOU COULD NEED

  • 5 out of 5
This is a beautiful property with an exceptional shoreline. Very private at the end of a road, the privacy is also exceptional inside as there are guest bedrooms and baths down a hallway quite separate from the master. You won't be bothered by the noise of night owls or early risers. Gorgeous views and the icing on the cake is the observatory complete with telescope for the astronomy lovers. Spacious and very well designed. If you are looking for privacy, beauty, and comfort it's there.

FABULOUS FALL GETAWAY

  • 5 out of 5
My parents, our son and his wife, and my husband and I loved our three night stay here at the peak of fall color. The home exceeded our expectations with its stunning view of the lake through the woods, large fireplace where we enjoyed nightly fires, fully equipped kitchen, and comfortable furniture. The large dining area table was ideal for game playing each evening. It was especially nice for my parents that their bedroom was on the main floor as were all the bedrooms.

Getting up at sunrise and walking the short distance to the lake shore was a highlight. With just an automatic digital camera, we took some amazing pictures of the sun coming up over the lake, glistening rocks along the shore, and shoreline foliage.

The location was ideal for a day trip to Grand Marais where we checked out the many gift shops, tried some of the World's Best Donuts, and had a delicious lunch on the outdoor deck of The Angry Trout. Golfing at the Superior National Golf Course and leaf peeping along the back roads where we found a maple syrup store were other activities we enjoyed. All six of us were thrilled with the views afforded by taking the very nearby Lutsen gondola ride, skimming the multi-colored treetops of the ski hill and then walking the short distance to the overlook at the top where fall beauty was spread below us as far as the eye could see. The hike that four of us took to the top of Olberg Mountain afforded more spectacular views in the late afternoon sun.

My parents, who are in their mid-80's and live in Iowa, had always wanted to see the North Shore. They were not disappointed! My husband and I live in Wisconsin and had been to the North Shore a few times before. We always enjoy the area, but this time it was extra special with the fantastic accommodations this VRBO home provided.

Owner's Response: Fall is far and away my favorite time on the North Shore, especially all the maple trees on the mountains! It reminds me of the colors we enjoyed growing up on the east coast -- we're happy you loved it too!

A PREFECT PLACE TO STAY ON THE NORTH SHORE!

  • 5 out of 5
Since our children were very young, we would take them to the North Shore periodically throughout the year. Although they are grown and have young children of their own, we have continued this family tradition. We are thrilled to have found this place! The home is lovely and the views are amazing. The architecture of the home allows for both privacy and group gatherings. The ambience of the home is relaxing and soothing. The shoreline is perfect for relaxing by the lake and looking for rocks. And the privacy is amazing- especially for visitors who have been used to staying at resorts or condos in the area. For this review, I also asked the family members what I should say. Here are some of their replies: "Comfortable", "Private". "Beautiful Shoreline", "Great rocks on the beach," "Good movies for the DVDs", "Wonderful kitchen", "Great location", "A garage to put the car in" (you can guess that a man said that..), and more positive comments too numerous to mention. But, this one says it all: "Grandma, when can we go back??"

EVERYTHING YOU COULD HOPE FOR AND MORE!

  • 5 out of 5
We have stayed on the North Shore a few times before as it is a favorite family vacation spot. This year we chose Grey Havens based on the lovely pictures and inviting sound of the place. We also traveled with another family for the first time. It was everything described and more. The home is extremely well cared for and private. You can tell the owners truly love the area and their home is very personal, making it all the more inviting. The views from the home are beautiful and you are so close to the lake, you can hear the surf. The beach is secluded, perfect for reflection and rock skipping. We enjoyed daily hikes up various trails in search of waterfalls, which seem to be everywhere! Beachcombing and a day spent in Grand Marais were other great pass times. While in Grand Marais, be sure to hike out to Artist's Pt. and visit the North House Folk School. We sent the dads in our group on a sailboat ride there for Father's Day. We find this area a great place to have as a base when exploring both directions up and down the shore. It is an easy drive to the Canadian border and only about 90 min. from Duluth. The owners were always very responsive and helpful with questions. We look forward to returning to Grey Havens in the future!
