About this property

Maine lakeside log cabin perfection: 3 bedrm, 2ba, hot tub, boats, raft, fishing

Comfort & quiet in this fully equipped rural Maine lakeside home. You get peace, beauty, wildlife watching, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, stars & comets in brilliant night sky, relaxing, reading, board games, Foosball, hot tub, firepit, hammock, much more to help you unwind and reconnect with family and friends! Fast (1 gig) WiFi/cable. Fully equipped kitchen and pantry. Two sit-on-top kayaks, 1 sit-in (older) kayak, 1 canoe, 1 paddleboat, swim raft, and a hot tub.
Note: Kiwi Lodge is not in a tourist area. There are endless outdoor activities but the nearest mall is 45 minutes away in Augusta or Auburn, with a larger one in Portland, 90 minutes away. Fine dining in Lewiston (45 minutes) and many options in Portland, but Farmington and Wilton have good but casual style options. Lots of lobster though, ready steamed if you want, for fabulous at-home dining on the deck of Kiwi Lodge, overlooking the water.
Nightlife in Farmington? Well, there are a few pubs, and a cinema, but this rural area does close down early!
We can promise lots of options for family enjoyment in this spacious 2,000 sq ft log cabin with 3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, 3 levels with wrap-around deck overlooking water. Large kitchen, dining area at one end, overlooking garden and lake. Living room on main level, family room on garden level. We do not have a/c. There can be hot, humid weather in the summer but it does not last long, cools down at night and the 17 windows in the house, with ceiling and floor fans, provide great cross-ventilation for an eco-friendly alternative.
Excellent fishing! Good-sized large mouth bass & small mouth bass, sunfish.
We keep the kitchen pantry cupboard stocked with everything needed for cooking at home, including a wide range of spices as well as all the essentials. The chef in our family demands this! Hannaford & Walmart supermarkets are 10 minutes away in the charming university town of Farmington, for very good fresh goods, excellent fish and shellfish.
The property has almost two acres of lawn and woods; a thick fringe of trees gives privacy on all sides except the one open to the water.
A deep drilled well ensures pure drinking water. Power cuts can happen, usually from one of the trillions of trees falling on a line, but they are speedily dealt with and there is a generator to deal with a longer-than-normal cut in service. The local maintenance man will quickly connect it.
House amenities: Gas stove, d/w, fridge, microwave, small electrics, all items needed for cooking and baking. And a herb garden outside the kitchen door!
Washer, dryer. Two large TVs, cable, newly installed (May 2024) 1 gig internet, equalling 1K mbps, enables online gaming as well as effective use of all your devices! There are many board & card games, movies, books and a small Foosball table in the family room.
Beds: All hand-made by Maine artisans. Two upper level bedrooms, king size bed in one, queen and full size in the second. Garden level bedroom has bunk with full size lower and twin size upper. Deep comfy mattresses, quality bedding.
Futon available (bring your own bedding for futon) and a Pack'nPlay.
Property amenities: outdoor hot tub, hammock, volleyball/ badminton/pickle ball net, horseshoes, croquet, 55' dock, swim raft anchored in lake. Rental includes paddleboat, large canoe, two sit-on-top and one hard-sided kayaks. Life jackets in all sizes. Gas grill on deck.

Linens, bedding, towels provided, shampoo, conditioner, lotions, all cleaning supplies incl. laundry, d/w detergents, paper goods. Please bring your own swim/hot tub towels.

Local Area – less than an hour (We send recommendations for local area and region after booking.)
Ten minutes to Farmington's shopping, restaurants, movies, golf courses, wonderful hiking! We send you lots of recommendations for what to do, where to go, where to eat. Flint Woods in Farmington has over 60 acres of well maintained, easy paths through the woods, suitable for walkers of all ages.
Many other small towns, like Wilton, 8 mins (eat at Calzolaio’s), Hallowell, 45 mins (antiques, restaurants), Auburn/Lewiston, 45 mins (eat at Fish Bones or DaVinci), Skowhegan, 40 mins - Granary - book a tour, cafe, creamery, Sat. Farmers' Market, large antique store. Don’t forget the farm visits – Turner’s own Nezinscot Farm (30 mins) even has a café, highly rated for breakfast, brunch.
One-Two hours - Too many to list!
Maine Botanical Garden on Boothbay Pensinsula - a seaside botanical garden! Go a couple miles more to town for lobster rolls. Portland – we could go on for many pages. See-do-eat in our detailed guide for guests. Camden and Rockport are both postcard-perfect, impossibly scenic. Boat tours from many places on the coast, for whale watching, island visiting. Missed the moose? Maine Wildlife Park at Gray has them, bears too, and much more. Hiking? Bald Mountain, 3.5 miles round trip, about 1,100' elevation, countless others. Paddleboat trips on Moosehead Lake in Greenville. Freeport outlet shopping (6 LL Bean stores!), and harbor side Harraseeket restaurant, choose your own lobster.

Kiwi Lodge
If you want a serene, quiet getaway, you will enjoy staying on Sand Pond as did we. A highlight is to paddle out on the pond and observe the loon family. A fun outdoor place to eat is the Farmhouse Beer Garden about 15 minutes away. Lobsters from Moshers were good but they don’t package them properly. They put them in a paper bag so be sure they put the bag in a plastic one or the bottom will break through. Powder House Hills Trails in Farmington is a nice pretty place to hike and fairly easy. Get away from the hustle and bustle of a lot of our daily lives and stay at Kiwi Lodge.

Maine Getaway
Very comfortable cabin. A place to get away from it all. Got to spend some family time without the normal day to day demands. Cabin was comfortable and had everything we needed. Kay was easy to contact and was very attentive.

beautiful clean log house on lake
Beautiful 3 level log house in private setting with lake access. Kitchen and bathrooms well stocked with all necessary amenities. The only minor drawback was that the house was very dark indoors, especially in cloudy, rainy weather. Also, the main floor windows didn't have any window coverings which might not bother most folks, but we felt a bit 'exposed' at night. The porch with pond views was great for eating outdoors, even in rainy weather. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and the surrounding area.

About the host

Hosted by Kay

Host profile image
Our family has been hosting for years now. We love it! Our regular guests have become friends, as we've met and talked over the years. Even if we don't meet in person, learning about our guests through our communications is deeply rewarding. I grew up in a farm community where everyone knew everyone, so rural Maine feels like home. I left my native New Zealand with plans to travel widely and after doing that, ended up living in a big city in the US. The peace and beauty of Kiwi Lodge is a precious retreat for our family. After the demands of urban life, it was a joy to find this wonderful log house in the western mountains of Maine. Great neighbors, helpful and friendly. Endless outdoor activities. The Maine culinary and farm cultures are constantly evolving, enhancing the quality of life. We love to stop by the roadside stands for fresh vegetables, fruit, grass-fed beef, home-made organic bread, free range eggs! The farm to table movement just keeps growing in Maine. The local supermarket is great; the local Gifford's ice cream parlor pulls us in; the library selection is as good as the wonderful staff - I could go on, but come and find out for yourself!

Why they chose this property

The moment we saw the house, we loved it! As soon as we stepped inside and saw its charm and excellent design, we knew that this was the special family retreat we had dreamed of. Peace and privacy with super friendly neighbors as well - it's an unbeatable combination. We've been here since 2010 and every year we enjoy it more! Every year we find different hiking trails, meet new people, find more historical and sightseeing spots and even better restaurants and roadside stands.

What makes this property unique

What could be better than breakfast on the deck, watching the early morning mist rise from the water and a string of ducklings following mother to their own breakfast. Then there is the decision on whether to have the canoe-kayak race or go fishing or hike to the top of Mt Blue. If the energy level is not high enough, we could visit one of our favorite antique stores in a quaint river town (there are so many nearby) or zip over to Black Acres for some of their richly flavored steak to grill for dinner, unless everyone wants lobster again. We can do a few lengths out to the swim raft and back, or just stretch out in a lounger on the lawn and read to our hearts content. Tomorrow we will go hiking - or maybe just swing in the hammock and not do too much at all!
