Overview

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday home in Red Wing

House, 4 Bedrooms + Den, 2.25 Baths, (Sleeps 8-12)

You will not forget a weekend spent at Windbeam House, 6 miles from charming Red Wing, Minnesota. Floor-to-ceiling living room windows offer spectacular views of not only Goose Lake but also the bluffs of historic Red Wing across the river. This tree-lined panorama provides breath-taking year round scenery, including miles of the Mississippi's famous fall foliage and ever changing waters. Because the house sits on the edge of the bluff above the lake, it is a perfect spot to sit and relax, watching a wide array of birds and animals, including eagles and flocks of migratory swans and pelicans in season, not to mention trains passing silently along the edge of the lake below.

This four bedroom rambler sleeps 12 with one full bath and two half baths, a family room, full kitchen and dining room. Only one hour from Minneapolis/St.Paul or Rochester, Minnesota, this home offers a retreat for groups from 2-12. And while it is hard not to be mesmerized by the view, it is also within a few miles of shopping, hiking, fishing, golf, snowshoeing and skiing. Not to mention an extensive arts community, restaurants, antique dealers, the Sheldon Theater and Treasure Island Casino.

This peaceful house is pet friendly and comfortably furnished in southwestern style. The master bedroom is equipped with a queen size bed and includes a private half bath. The other three bedrooms have double beds. Downstairs, the family room offers two full futon sofas.

Four generations of our family have come together in this home and we look forward to sharing it with you.

About Trudi Schaefer

We live on a small farm just 6 miles from Windbeam House. We purchased our farm in 1976 when the farmhouse was about to be demolished. Much of our time since then has been spent renovating the house and outbuildings and creating the many gardens that surround Windbeam Farm.

Trudi Schaefer purchased this house in 2000

Why Trudi Schaefer chose Red Wing

We inherited this property from Paul's parents in 2010. Immediately, we saw the potential for furnishing it as a guest house for the many friends and families who visit the Red Wing area. Womens Weekends Away and Fishing tournaments are two of the groups who find Windbeam House the perfect place to stay.

What makes this house unique

Practically every person that comes through the front door of Windbeam House is awed by the lovely view of the Mississippi River and the bluffs of Red Wing that greet them through the wall-to-wall windows of the living room. People tell us they sit in that room for many peaceful hours, watching the river, the birds but especially the eagles who perch in the trees below the house.

Diamond in the Bluff!

  • 5 of 5

The Windbeam House was perfect for our girls getaway! Everything was pretty seamless. Instructions were clear, owners were friendly, and the house was accurate to its description. Excellent and scenic back yard, which we took advantage of as much as we could. We loved hearing the trains go by and just being able to overlook the bluffs! Beautiful views! It helped that we were there over a gorgous weekend too. We brought our bikes and were able to keep them in the spacious garage. We only got to bike over into Red Wing during the day, but I could tell that many biking adventures could be had in the area. I'd go back again and again. Thank you, Trudi, for sharing your gem of a house!

Owner's Response: I am so glad that you enjoyed the house and the view. So many people comment on the view from the house, it really is a gem. There are many biking adventures in the area so please, do come again Carrie and take advantage of our return guest discount. Maybe you could consider coming this winter for a cross country skiing trip. Lots of ops there too.

Great rental!

Fantastic view- nice layout of home. They leave great, detailed information about the house which makes it easy being there.

Owner's Response: We're so glad you had a good time. That's our main reason for having the house as a vacation rental. We work hard to continue making Windbeam House a lovely retreat for large and small groups and we feel great when people tell us we're doing just that. Hope to see you again.

An older style house showing its age in some respects but the space, warmth (for us the middle of a very cold Feb), views and artistic decoration made up for that. Train noise is noticeable but we found it fine and watching them was fun. All in all an enjoyable time.

Owner's Response: We have had many visitors at Windbeam House from all over the country including family reunions, girls' weekend away groups and vacationers in general. It was great to have people from another country stay and hear that their response was similar to so many others. Windbeam House is cozy, comfortable and interesting whether you come from across the state or around the world. (I'm just sorry it was so bitter cold for you Alison).

GREAT WEEKEND

  • 4 of 5

The property was large enough to accommodate our family for a late Christmas get together in February. Each room had it's own thermostat for individual comfort. Everything was provided so we only had to bring food and our own belongings. Great view of the water. Would be a great property in the summer. We had a great time!

Owner's Response: I thought it was so sweet that you were having your Christmas together at Windbeam House in February. Glad you had such a good time. There was not even a piece of tinsel left behind, thanks for the super check-out and DO come again.

Sibling get-together

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your spacious home. It was comfortable and roomy for our "sibling get-together," my husband's 3 siblings and the 4 spouses. We enjoyed the eagles above and the trains below. The view toward the river is beautiful and the colors were "just right." There are fun things to do in nearby Red Wing and we also went to the National Eagle Center in Wabasha.

Family Weekend Getaway

  • 2 of 5

My family and I take an annual weekend getaway in September. This year we traveled to Red Wing, MN. Unlike other destinations we have visited, there were not many options for house rentals in the Red Wing area. Windbeam house looked nice in the pictures, had several good reviews and was available during our timeframe.

Upon entering the community where the house is located, we were surprised that it was in such a developed neighborhood. From the photos, the house appeared remote and private, however, the neighbors on either side were quite close to us. We prefer a little more quiet (there were many cars going by day and night, the next-door neighbor was working on projects with electric tools, etc...) and since the windows had no shades or curtains, we felt fully exposed to the world-especially at night when we had lights on in the house.

When we initially entered the house, a mildew/mold smell permeated the air and the owner told us that the dehumidifier had not automatically shut off in the basement, overflowed and the carpet had been wet. There were also issues with pipes freezing last winter. The windows were all labeled with signs saying do not open windows. The smell was quite overwhelming so we left the front door open with the screen door closed to at least allow some air circulation to clear out the smell. You did get used to the smell but when you left the house and returned, you noticed it immediately. I did notice dark spots in the lower level bedroom but am not sure if that was mold or just dirt.

The owner was quite pleasant when we arrived but we did think we had interrupted her in the middle of cleaning as the floor was filthy. She left soon after we arrived without cleaning the floor. We swept and vacuumed the floors. We also noticed that some dishes and silverware did not appear clean but had been put away - the coffee pot needed cleaning as did the coffee thermos. The coffee thermos had a layer of film on it that was quite thick and appeared that it may never have been properly cleaned.

The sheets, blankets and towels appeared clean. The lower level bathroom floor had not been swept but the sink and shower appeared clean.

The trains were more frequent and louder than we anticipated. Some family members were awakened during the night when the trains rolled by and there were even a few times when the whistles blew.

This house was not what we expected. Privacy and cleanliness were lacking. I would not recommend it.

Owner's Response: You know the old adage "You can satisfy some of the people all of the time. . ." Well WOW! obviously I failed here. If you look over our reviews for Windbeam House you will see that many people have been happy with our house and I am truly sorry that this group was so thoroughly dissatisfied. I do take extreme exception to the word "filthy". There has never been and will never be anything filthy in Windbeam House. I wish I could have done better for these folks and I will always be trying.
