Pura Vida is a house overlooking Las Pelás Bay and the island of St. Thomas. Unforgettable views and just one mile away from one of Culebra's most beautiful beaches: Zoní Beach. All bedrooms have air conditioning and fans. Two master bedrooms with king size beds with private bathroom and balconies. A third bedroom with queen size bed and a fourth with bunk beds. Beautiful lap pool overlooking the bay and ocean. One fully equipped kitchen in the main dining area and second small kitchen near pool area. 3 dining areas: main, balcony and pool area. Access to nature trails, snorkeling, swimming areas. Wi-Fi connection and iPod dock station provided.
My husband is originally from Puerto Rico but went to school in California where he and I met and now reside. We discovered Culebra on one of our trips to Puerto Rico. As it turns out, Carlos’ grandfather was a trader/explorer and sailed the Caribbean frequenting our little bay as a resting spot. (The history of his sailboat, the Pocahontas, can be found in the Culebra museum.) Carlos has had a deep connection to this magical place ever since he was a boy in Puerto Rico. Unique fact: our children all played competitive water polo and two of our daughters are gold medalists from the London Olympics; they chose to celebrate their win here in Culebra!
Carlos and Peggy Steffens purchased this house in 2009
This property offers breathtaking views of Las Pelas Bay, Culebrita and St.Thomas. You will see the most beautiful colors in the water as the sun, cloud and occasional rain pass over, it is absolutely mesmerizing. Our peninsula is called Punto del Viento for the constant winds that keep it cool and refreshing even in the hottest tropical weather. We love to swim and love the large lap pool. We love to boat, kayak, snorkel, paddle board and our little bay is the perfect playground. Plus Culebrita is a quick boat ride away and Zoni beach just minutes away by car. Culebra is a beautiful wildlife refuge with mangroves and turtle nesting sites, and we are surrounded by trails for exploring. In this tropical island, who would have thought we could find cacti? Culebra offers so many treasures to discover.
We built our home to take advantage of these beautiful views, to provide a place of relaxation, healthy living and adventure. We have one of the largest pools on the island and enjoy refreshing after long day in sun. We love our porch for the mesmerizing views of St Thomas, for the constantly changing colors of the water and for the most amazing star gazing. We love our proximity to all kinds of nature, the envigorating walk to Zoni, the breezes during our yoga sessions on the porch, the quick boat ride to Culebrita and the peace and serenity that is Pura Vida.
Seldom do you walk into a rental property and immediately feel the warmth of a home, but it happens at Pura Vida. There is an almost mystical aura of calm and peace that you will feel at once. The Steffens have put so much thought and love into this home, you will feel blessed to have shared it. The house is immaculate and very well supplied, the rooms are spacious and comfortable and separating the living areas from the sleeping area is genius! The views from the main house as well as the bedrooms are simply spectacular... from the turquoise waters to the ever changing sky, to the twinkling lights of St. Thomas in the distance. We watched the sunrise every morning over St. Thomas, and then were lucky enough to have a full moon rising over the same view at night! We spent hours in the rocking chairs on the porch, first watching boats come and go into the bay near Las Pelas, and then had cocktails and played dominoes in the cool breeze at night. You won't want to go to bed, except you get to get up and do it all over again!
We visited the town of Dewey and got "Bushwhacked" at both Mamacita's and the Dinghy Dock, both awesome places full of Caribbean charm. But the highlight of our trip was our visit to Culebrita by boat taxi...snorkeling and hiking to a hidden beach that must be seen to be believed..We found paradise!! Don't miss Culebrita!
Thank you Peggy and Carlos for sharing your bit of heaven with all of us. It has provided memories for a lifetime!
Pura Vida is as wonderful a place as one could imagine. All the superlatives that other reviewers have used to describe this property are correct. One thing, however that the photos don't show adequately is the gorgeous landscaping of flowering trees and bushes that has no doubt matured since the photos on this site were taken.
We were a party of 6, including me, my wife (in our 60's), our two daughters and their long term boyfriends (in their mid 20's). We spent a lot of time together, but the intelligent design of splitting the sleeping area from the living area into two buildings made it easy to have separate time, or to sleep or be lively early or late and not disturb others.
We cooked a lot, and the kitchen is incredibly well equipped and organized. There is pretty much any pot or pan or utensil you could need, and plenty of silverware and glasses. Unlike some other rentals that get very cheap with things like dish soap or sponges, or decent brooms, the Steffens realize that folks will keep things cleaner if they have adequate materials to do the job. Thank you!
The road to the house is fairly steep (worth every vertical foot for the view and the breeze!), but we rented two golf carts from Jerry's and had no problems, even with 4 on board. We've dealt with both Carlos and Jerry's and had great experiences with both, but Jerry's carts are a bit beefier. We did not do much nighttime driving, but if you have young ones who want to go into Dewey for nightlife, you may want to consider a Jeep, as the trip is @ 5-6 miles of fairly dark, narrow and twisty road. We had no problem in this regard when we did drive at night, but it is something to think about.
I could go on and on about how beautiful Pura Vida is, the wonderful attention to detail and love the Steffens have put into the design and maintenance of the property, and how we wailed in sorrow when we had to leave. But, read the other reviews for a full picture!
We fully, totally, completely recommend this property!! Thank you Steffens family. Thank you Manuel.
What an amazing trip! Our vacation to Culebra was perfect! From the breathtaking views overlooking Las Pelás Bay to swimming laps in the pool, Pura Vida house has it all. The location is easily the best on the island!! One of my favorite things to do during the trip was watch the unbelievable sunrise while sitting in the rocking chairs on the deck. Pura Vida was easily one of the most beautiful vacation houses I have traveled to. I can't wait to go back!
Our party of 6 was extremely happy at Pura Vida. Beautiful views, spacious and clean interiors, and helpful owners. The house manager Miguel even went out of his way to get an iron for us from the main island, since we were attending a wedding and needed to press our clothes. What a relaxing, memorable weekend. Highly recommended!
We have traveled to some beautiful places and this property is on top of the list!!!! CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN and gorgeous. Perfect for a large family. We have 4 kids ranging from 1 yr-17 yrs and brought our Nanny with us and this was PERFECTION. Everyone in the family woke up early to watch the gorgeous sunrise. The house was impeccably maintained and had a magical aura about it. Complete serenity and relaxation amidst some of the most amazing views anywhere in the world. We will certainly be finding our way back to this amazing home and are more than grateful the homeowners share their peace of paradise.
This is a "home" and not a house! My daughters (ages 11 and 8) loved our stay in Culebra. Our home base made this visit an experience. The views, the cleanliness, the layout of the house, the pool, the caretaker and last but not least the owners who ensure that staying in their home is an experience to realize. We could always go off for a busy day of fun knowing that we will return to a comfortable place to relax. Clean and spacious bathrooms along with a big, fully equipped kitchen were only some of the great amenities. Air conditioning in the bedrooms made sleeping ideal. Did I mention the views?? Spectacular!! Privacy? Total!! This is THE place to stay on Culebra!!
