Cottage, 5 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 11-13)

SUMMARY:

Our Cottage is available for rent year round in Grand Haven, Michigan. Walk to the beach, the pier, downtown, Mulligan's Hollow, Duncan Woods, the YMCA, the town ski hill, cross-country trails-- everything you love about Grand Haven is just steps away! You cannot believe how cute this home is inside and out! Families have been summering in this cottage for over a century! Just $900-3,750/week for one of the cutest beach area cottages in all of Grand Haven!

THE LOCATION:

While we are right near the beach, you can still walk everywhere in town within 20 minutes! Park your car and forget about it. The Cottage sits on the bluff just above the City of Grand Haven Beach and the Grand Haven State Park! Peterson Ridge is a small path on the plateau between Edward Ave and the bluff over the beach. There are NO cars on Peterson Ridge, so it is very private and kid-friendly. Our cottage backs to the Woods of Mulligan's Hollow with miles of trails separating the beachfront cottages from downtown Grand Haven! The woods keep the cottage cool on even the warmest days!

OUTSIDE THE HOME:

Rinse off in the HOT WATER outdoor shower and de-beach on the front porch with many hooks for toys, suits, towels and flip-flops. The 2nd floor deck has great sun from mid-morning-mid afternoon plus a small view of Lake Michigan! There is a very, nice gas grill outside off the kitchen. There is a fantastic nap hammock overlooking Mulligan's Hollow behind the cottage. The outdoor fireplace is perfect for s'mores and Michigan wine.

INSIDE THE COTTAGE:

The first floor has a large porch, living room, fireplace, dining room and adorable kitchen with nice, clean appliances. There are 2 sofas and a huge sectional in the living room around the fireplace and tv. The dining table is set for 6, but can accommodate 10 with 2 leaves. There are dozens of board games, puzzles, books, toys, beach towels, beach toys, beach chairs, to enjoy. Each bedroom has windows on 2 walls for great evening cross-breezes and the sound of waves!

THE ROOMS:

Bedroom #1 on the 2nd floor has a Queen bed, closet and dresser overlooking the 2nd floor deck.

Bedroom #2 on the 2nd floor has a Queen bed and closet overlooking Mulligan's Hollow.

Bedroom #3 on the 2nd floor has a full-size bed, a twin bed, a closet and dresser overlooking 2nd floor porch.

About Cory Robertson

I am a father of 2 boys (ages 7 and 9) who are my life! We love being at the cottage and doing all there is to do in this very special spot!

Cory Robertson purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Cory Robertson chose Grand Haven

My mother's family is from Grand Haven, and I have been summering here my whole life. I wanted to be out at the beach, but also wanted to be near enough to the pier to walk everywhere. Our home sits right on the edge of Mulligan's Hollow for hiking, trail-riding, dog-walking and wildlife adventuring! We are so close to the beach that you can come up and down all day for supplies, naps, snacks, tantrums without giving up your whole day at the beach.

What makes this cottage unique

My hammock is my favorite afternoon spot when the boys go down for their nap after a day at the beach.

Walking the beach early morning and at sunset is heavenly.

The Musical Fountain is as charming and gratifying as it is hokey. Who cares if it is silly? You're eating Dairy Treat on a hillside over the river with a 1000 others who have completely forgotten last week's rat-race and are embracing a wonderful summer ritual in Grand Haven. This is not to be missed!

Such a GREAT time!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a last minute place to stay for spring break. Honestly, we couldn't have been more relieved when Cory said his house was available. He was extremely kind and helpful, and he was there for any questions we had. The cottage is very roomy and comfortable and made us all feel right at home. The beach is not far away and we look forward to visiting at a warmer time so that we are really able to take in all of the lakes beauty. There is a lot to do around the property as well. During our stay we took a hike through the trail behind the house and walked through the town. Muskegon isn't that far away either and we were able to go there to find other things to do as well. There wasn't a dull moment within our group while we were at the cottage, and we look forward to staying there again in the future!

Charming house, excellent customer service

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cottage in March on very short notice. We had a death in the family and I called the owner on my way into town about 24 hours prior to the time I would need it. Although the owner was not able to get a professional cleaner in in that short of time, he took the effort and I'm sure much time to get the job done on his own to accommodate us. He was easy to text or email to answer questions and help us get settled with what we needed. The home was very well stocked with towels, blankets, soaps, cookware, and even a lot of food basics which were told to help ourselves to- seasonings, crackers, chips, candy, butter, etc. It was nice to not have to stock an entire kitchen with condiments for the 1-2 meals you'd need (mustard, for example) it. For as old as the house is, it has been updated with appliances and the rooms more soundproof than you'd expect. The only thing I guess I would let people know about is that at least in March, the downstairs can be a bit chilly while the upstairs a bit too warm. We cracked some windows upstairs and dressed warmly downstairs and it wasn't a problem. As another reviewer mentioned, there are only two designated parking spots for the cabin. I'm sure the owner could tell you where overflow parking would be if you need it though. There were plenty of games, books and toys for the kids. We had 6 adults plus kids and some visitors, and I heard a lot of "good find on the house" comments. The home is very walkable to a nice beach on Lake Michigan. All in all I'd say it was a great find with a great owner.

September holiday

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Mary Ann Cottage was such a wonderful time for us this past September. The cottage is charming and in the perfect location. We were able to do all the things on our list - including the beach, Lovers Lane, strolling down Washington Ave, walking the pier, visiting familiar places and discovering new - all with great ease from this cottage. The Mary Ann is a great 'home away from home' - comfortable, spacious, with all the amenities we could possibly need - including a yard for our dog - AND the fixin's for S'mores waiting for us on our arrival!!

The owner Cory was very helpful during the booking process and most welcoming on our arrival, answering any questions we had and then having a lovely visit with us later during our stay. It was wonderful sharing our stories of Grand Haven. Cory also recommended some great places to check out as we drove to the upper peninsula, which added to the enjoyment of our trip.

It was truly a wonderful holiday and the Mary Ann Cottage a location I would recommend highly. We look forward to our next trip to Grand Haven and to staying once again at the Mary Ann Cottage.

Thanks for sharing this lovely spot with us!!

Perfect weekend away

  • 5 of 5

Just back from a fabulous girls weekend. Our cottage stay was "perfect" in my sisters words and more than we could ever ask for. Arriving in 3 feet of snow, the owner greeted us with a warm smile and a freshly cleared and salted path to walk up to the cottage. When we entered the house a fire was going in the fireplace and it was so inviting. We were instantly convinced we'd have the time we were hoping for. Before the arrival and during the booking process Cory was always available to answer questions and offer advice on fun things to do in town. I never once had an issue contacting him and he was always so upbeat to talk with. I could tell he enjoyed renting this lovely property out. His service continued with excellence during our stay and he went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable, felt at home, and cared for. Some of our favorite moments included roasting marshmallows around the fire place, having a fabulous dinner at the Kirby grille room, sipping wine in the porch and relaxing the night away. Ps. He even provided slippers so that our feet wouldn't get cold due to the frigid temps outside. Who does that? :) service like that doesn't exist anymore. Overall we had the best most memorable time. Can not wait to go back!!!

Grand Haven

  • 2 of 5

There was only one bathroom, which was very inconvenient to say the least. Had been promised a second would be finished by the time we got there. Tub/shower was impossible to get into for folks our age (early 70's) even though we are all very mobile and in good health. Fabric softener/dryer sheets used on linens caused skin reaction in one of our group. Front steps sloped and dangerous. Downstairs smoke detector not operational. Kitchen faucet dripped. The property was clean and the owner was very helpful in answering our questions and concerns. He had someone there very quickly to get WiFi up and running. Would recommend to young families in the summer if smoke detector and steps fixed.

Owner's Response: I feel terrible about the second bath not being done for this guest. When the guest booked, we had only advertised one bath, but my contractor had promised to complete the new bath early, so I foolishly told the guest about the surprise bath. I held the two weeks after Labor Day off the calendar for the contractor to do his work. The contractor was "delayed at another job" and could not do the work during the reserved window I gave him. We had many Fall bookings after that window and I could not let the contractor begin for fear of disrupting anyone's stay. The new bath and 1st floor suited room were completed over the winter and only now have we begun advertising that we have 2 baths. The fault is mine entirely and I won't make the mistake again of discussing planned updates before they are completed. Both baths have cute clawfoot tubs, which almost every guest loves. I am sorry that this guest found them not to their liking. We now specifically state that the baths have them, in case others prefer something else.

Mary Ann Cottage on Peterson Ridge, Grand Haven MI

  • 3 of 5

The cottage was adequate for our stay but I felt the owner could be much more responsive to the renters. When I booked the cottage in March he was more than happy to get me to pay up front call me back and put some pressure on me to rent, telling me it was his last week left etc.. When the time came to go it was different story. I called him about two weeks before to make sure it was all set we were scheduled pd up etc. I called and called with no response. After paying the entire amount up front,I became quite concerned. I E-mailed him a quick note asking if everything was all set under the VRBO site and he replied instantly that "you are all set" would call me the next day. Still no call. I was loosing sleep over it,with all our children coming, one from Indiana,I wanted to make certain sure everything was fine. Still no call,I was getting worried. Finally after my husband called left a message that he felt it wasn't good business policy not to call people back. He called and assured me we were all set. I was relieved, but still couldn't understand why he couldn't had called me the first time! The cottage was old and one bathroom was a challenge at times. The worst part was having to park our cars somewhere else every night. There are only 2 parking places and that was not fun. You cannot park on the west side of 31,overnight,so we had to find a place to put at least one car every night. That was an inconvenience. When we tried to turn on the gas grill it was empty ,both tanks were empty. When I texted they were, his only response was "oops the previous renters must have left it on all night!" no "sorry" for any of the above . To his credit he did come and give us a new tank on Thurs! There were plenty of toys for the kids and linens were provided. The beach is gorgeous and easy to get to. The neighbors are awesome!! The cottage was adequate, but I will not rent from that owner again.

Owner's Response: There is never an excuse or poor follow-up. This is particularly embarrassing for me, because I am proud of my quick response and my reputation in that area is pretty established. I travel occasionally for work and have established new relationships in Grand Haven to back me up better when I am gone. I always keep a spare gas tank on the back porch for guests just so this problem DOESN'T happen, but in this case, the previous guest must have emptied one tank and put it on the shelf where my spare usually is. My cleaner saw the tank in my "spare" spot and didn't worry. Somehow, the previous renter must have emptied both tanks in one week! This has never happened before or since and is just something that I had not planned for. Now, my cleaning crew checks the grill and the spare as part of their routine. I trust this never comes up again. Regarding parking, the cottages near the beach in Grand Haven were mostly platted and built around 1890 before roads were in the area. The inter-urban railway brought people from Grand Rapids and dropped them off on the beach and people would walk up the stairs, sidewalks and boardwalks up the sand dunes to their cottages. Eventually, some of the sidewalks and boardwalks became roads, but automobile parking was not originally contemplated at all. As a result, ANY private parking near the Grand Haven State Park and City Beaches is highly coveted (as the many "private" signs there will attest). We have 2 parking spaces, which makes us relatively rich among the old cottage owners. More vehicle than that will have to be parked further into town during the stay. While this may seem inconvenient for some large groups who are unable to coordinate a carpool, it is a reality for just about all cottages near the beach in Grand Haven. In the Fall, Winter and Spring, we can usually coordinate extra parking with neighbors, but in the Summer, 2 cars is about all anyone could hope for near the State Park and City Beaches
