Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Montevarchi - La Colombaia
Villa, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)
Our family villa, reminiscent of the typical Tuscan “Leopoldino” style of architecture, was built with natural materials according to canons of bio-architecture, creating a comfortable environment.
La Colombaia is situated in open countryside on a gentle slope, surrounded by a large garden and fields planted with cypress trees, fruit trees and a biological vegetable garden, from which guests can have fresh produce.
The grounds also host a large pond with fish and wild ducks, where in summer one can admire lovely lily pads and their splendid blossoms. Close by, just 100 meters from the villa, is a plant nursery, the owner’s business and passion, with a vast collection of tropical plants.
La Colombaia is occupied on the first floor by its owners, Paolo and Anna.
The guest quarters are located in the back on the ground floor and are reached by a semi-circular drive flanked by cypress trees and hedges of rosemary, lavender, and roses.
The guests apartment (1475ft2 / 137m2) can accommodate a maximum of 4 persons and is composed of a kitchen/dining room, 1 bedroom with a queen-size bed, 1 big bedroom with a queen-size convertible sofa bed and sitting room with Home Cinema Plasma TV, 2 bathrooms, one with a bathtub and the other with a shower.
A few steps away from the guest quarters, on the south side of the villa, is a swimming pool (4.5 x 9.5 meters 1.3 depth), with a slatted-oak sun deck bordered by rosemary and laurel hedges.
It is shared with the owners and it is rarely used and never busy.
The pool is cleaned regularly. The location is peaceful .
It only 10 minutes walking distance from the villa to the old center of the town.
There are four complimentary bicycles available for use.
La Colombaia is located in the Arno River Valley at a 30 km radius from Florence, Siena and Arezzo with the Chianti hills to the west and the Pratomagno Mountains to the east.
More than any other place, this is a land where tradition and daily life exist side by side in perfect harmony. Montevarchi, situated in the midst of what is known as unspoiled “wine country” - with its vineyards, olive trees, castles, medieval hilltop villages and churches - is one of the more lively towns south of Florence.
The old-town center of Montevarchi is only 1 km from La Colombaia.
The history of Montevarchi dates back to circa 986, when pilgrims and travelers stopped here on their way to and from Rome.
Montevarchi: for centuries the “market town” for Valdarno, Chianti and Pratomagno – and one of the most important in Tuscany.
A meeting place for traders, townsfolk, the local livestock and grain “dealers” and above all for farmers and small local producers who, until the 1960s used all means possible to get to the town squares of Montevarchi, to make deals and sell their goods: free range chickens, vegetables, rabbits, artichokes, olive oils and chestnuts.
Today the area is famous for its contribution to the international fashion industry and boasts the location of prestigious fashion outlets like Prada and 'The Mall'.
The area has excellent restaurants, a farmer’s market and regular train service to Florence, Arezzo, Rome (with connections to every major Italian city).

My family includes my parents, Paolo and Anna, my brother Andrea, and me, Francesco.
We are from Montevarchi, Tuscany. Surrounded by beautiful landscapes, rolling hills and cities of art, we enjoy living and working here.
My father Paolo is a horticulturalist and owns a nursery specializing in ornamental plants-- a family business for three generations. He has many passions, and is especially fond of nature and the arts. He dedicates his free time to La Selva Giardino del Belvedere, an ancient farmhouse immersed in a sprawling botanical park sprinkled with modern art sculptures. It is located just 10 minutes from Montevarchi’s historical center.
For the past four decades, my mother Anna has taught primary school. She is dedicated to her job, loves reading history books, and is passionate about culture. Andrea studies political science at the University of Florence. In his free time, he helps my father out, is a Scout leader and plays rugby.
I manage La Selva Giardino del Belvedere (VRBO Listing #199293) and La Colombaia (VRBO Listing #344980). I enjoy sailing, traveling and exploring new cultures—and speak excellent English, too.
Francesco purchased this farmhouse in 1998
Why Francesco chose Montevarchi
In 1996, my parents built La Colombaia, a contemporary, Leopoldine-style Tuscan farmhouse. They constructed the house with natural materials such as handmade terracotta, cypress wood treated with beeswax, coconut fiber and cork, used for insulation. It rises in the midst of a vast, 10,000 metre-squared garden of meadows, various species of trees, a fruit orchard and an organic garden tended by our gardener, Franco.
What makes this farmhouse unique
Just 300 metres from La Colombaia, our guests can visit the renowned bakery owned by our good friends the Bonci family, whose delicious cakes are world-famous. A 10-minute walk takes you into Montevarchi’s historical center. Dating back to 1000 A.D., here you will discover lovely churches, many museums, restaurants and shops. Florence, Siena and Arezzo are only 40 minutes away by car or train. The A1 Autostrada and the railway allow easy travel to the north or south of Italy.
