Sapodilla is a charming stone clad cottage situated in a two acre garden on a hillside overlooking Falmouth & English Harbours. The owner built the original house 42 years ago and Sapodilla is her guest cottage set below the pool in a very private part of the garden. The garden is filled with indigenous trees and flowers with many palms and several fish ponds. The palm fringed pool, set away from the main house offers calm and privacy and lovely views. The garden is filled with birds, especially the three varieties of hummingbirds busy working away at the many flowers.
There are wonderful hikes right out of the garden gate. Hiking to Rendezvous Bay is one of Antigua’s five star adventures – from Springhill, you are already en route, and coming home to plunge in the pool and rinse off the salt and grabbing a cold rum punch in your cottage – makes it even more special. The hike takes between 30 – 40 minutes to one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, where you are often the only people on the beach! You can hike further to Carlisle bay or Wallings Dam in the rainforest. The owner can organize guides for these longer hikes.
A top class equestrian centre started by the owner is 3 minutes walk down the hill. The centre offers BHS (British Horse society) instruction and trails around the pretty valley and wild beaches. If you like riding and your partner is a sailor (or would like to learn) this is the ideal spot to stay. The owners are very keen sailors, and would be pleased to help organize this.
It is possible to spend a holiday at Sapodilla without a car, but we would recommend renting one. English Harbour is 7 minutes drive away with all its historical sites, great bars and restaurants, and a stunning beach. There are two good supermarkets nearby. Having a car gives you the freedom to explore the many beautiful beaches, and other hidden treasures. The owners would be pleased to help you with any information.
Previous guests have all loved the peace and tranquility, and yet the nearness of all the life in English and Falmouth Harbours.
Keywords: garden cottage, studio, beautiful views.
The owners are very keen sailors, riders, gardeners and dog lovers. They have lived at Springhill since 1969 and know the island very well, and are delighted to help any guests find their feet with anything they wish to do, whether sailing, riding, hiking, bird watching, etc. etc. or just leave them to sunbathe and enjoy the pool!
Peace, tranquillity, lovely views, great hiking, horseriding just outside garden gate.
We went to antigua to see my son and his friend finish their row across the atlantic. We stayed in Janie's cottage which was in a beautiful quiet spot in her garden. It had fantastic views over Falmouth Harbour and glorious flowers in the garden. It was a delightful little studio cottage with everything you needed all in a small space with a super patio to sit out on to enjoy the view and sunshine. 10 mins drive from Falmouth/English harbour - a perfect spot with a wonderful, friendly caring cottage owner
A wonderful place for a completely relaxing fortnight. Janie and Geoffrey are the perfect hosts, the cottage is small but gorgeous and has everything you need, a short drive to shops, restaurants and beaches, with fabulous views over English Harbour. I will certainly be back!
We spent three weeks in the cottage. It was located off the beaten path so the peace and quiet was great, yet close enough to restaurants and attractions it wasn't a problem to get out and do something.
Some days we felt like lazing around the pool and gazeebo and it made for a great day.
Janie was very good with communication and helpful with ideas for activities and good places to dine and hang out.
To make the best of the island, make sure to get a four wheel drive. If we didn't have that, the trips would have been limited.
English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour were excellent.
You can be as busy as you want on the island, but relaxing on the beach was our style.
The time went by too fast. A VERY enjoyable, relaxing time, weather was perfect.
I would definitely return.
My wife and I spent an amazing five days at Sapodilla Cottage thanks to a recommendation from a friend. This friend has stayed twice before and will be staying for his third visit shortly after we left. I'll begin by saying that Janie was from the beginning extremely helpful and responsive to all my email inquires. It helped knowing before we even left that our host was ready and willing to assist in our mini vacation. The cottage and grounds alike were fantastic and very well taken care of. As others have mentioned, charm was all around and waking up to a light breeze and the sound of a million birds was amazing. The flora surrounding the cottage was amazing, truly allowing for peace and seclusion. You will need a car to get there, preferably a 4X4 or off road car, but this will only make the rest of your trip worth while as my wife and I enjoyed driving around the island and taking routes off the beaten path. I am convinced of my return to the island and only hope that the cottage will be available seeing as my short time there was made only better by having stayed at the Sapodilla Cottage. Enjoy!
We stayed in the cottage for the 10 days preceding Christmas in December 2014. To say that my husband and I enjoyed our stay would be an understatement. Janie and Geoffrey's hospitality, the location, the accommodation, everything...was wonderful.
The cottage itself is small yet well laid out. The doors to the porch off the cottage can stay open all the time (even if it's raining a bit since the porch is well covered) increasing the living space considerably. The entire place is lovely with it's stonework and gingerbread trim. The views from the porch, and up by the pool, are incredible. The kitchen is well appointed for easy meals with a two burner hotplate and toaster oven. The fridge is also a good size. Janie provides a cooler for beach trips along with an umbrella and beach towels.
The grounds are an incredibly lush garden, the pool is the perfect place to relax at any time of day and the gazebo by the pool a nice place to start the day with a coffee or end the day with drink (it has lights and electrical outlets).
Overall, the cottage offers a lot of privacy. We did meet the couple staying in the Birds and Bees cottage on the property - but only up at the pool a few times. In fact, we ended up going out for dinner with them one evening. They were on their second trip to this property.
We found that we preferred being a 5 minute drive to Falmouth instead of immediately on the water where things are a bit more hemmed in. We didn't know this would be our preference until we spent some time on the island. That 5 minute drive brings you to shops, restaurants, marinas, and Nelson's Dockyard. Beaches like Pigeon or Galleon are a 7 minute drive and it takes about 9 minutes to get to Shirley's Lookout. The location was ideal and allowed us to take advantage of the peaceful and tranquil space that Springhill and the cottage offer without sacrificing the amenities and experience that that side of the island is all about.
With that said, renting a vehicle is important for getting around. I would recommend a small 4x4 as the roads are sometimes a bit rough on the island. Janie can make a host of suggestions as to car rental places, local restaurants and experiences.
Janie and Geoffrey are of the island and very well-connected and knowledgable about so much Antigua has to offer. We are truly grateful for having met them and experienced their genuine hospitality. We can't wait to return:)
We stayed at Sapodilla Cottage over the week of 4th of July. This is a very slow time on the island with lots of businesses closed following the winter/spring season but we loved the relaxed pace and lack of crowds. We were originally booked in the Birds and Bees cottage but due to a scheduling mix up, ended up in Sapodilla (Janie was very gracious about reducing the cost due to the changed). The cottage itself is packed with charm. At first we were unsure about the smaller kitchen and overall living area of Sapodilla but found that it worked quite well for 2 people and was much more private than the other cottage. A few things could be improved in the kitchen (sharper knives and scissors would be my main suggestion) but otherwise, we found everything we needed to cook breakfast and dinner each day. We loved the open-air nature of the cottage, especially the outdoor shower and hammock on the verandah. While it was the height of summer, the ceiling fan and island breezes made it comfortable to sleep at night. We also enjoyed the company of Janie's dogs who would come to visit us in the morning and evenings as well as the company of loads of birds and geckos on the porch. We visited Half Moon, Rendezvous, Pigeon and Darkwood Beaches -- each had its own distinct personality and all were wonderful (note: you really need a 4WD vehicle to get to Rendezvous; it's an adventure. And when you go to Darkwood get lunch from Mrs. George's stand). Janie was extremely helpful both before and during our visit. She recommended Titi Rent a Car and we had a great experience with them. Titi himself picked us up from and returned us to the airport so that we wouldn't have to struggle with directions. All in all, our week at Sapodilla Cottage could be summed up as peaceful. If I return to Antigua, Janie will be the first person I call!
My wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary here in this very intimate cottage setting overlooking Falmouth Bay. We are both city-seasoned, fairly hyper individuals when tackling our hectic daily routines in Boston—routines that can sometimes foster “chippy” exchanges between even the happiest of couples. The fact that we were in each others close company 24 hours every day for eight days—and never once entertained an argument or a “cross word”—is the best testament I can give to the refreshing, invigorating and sunny tonic that this bucolic setting delivered. Waking up to gorgeous panoramic sunrise views over the bay by simply propping our heads on our pillows; hearing the sing-song greetings and quizzical looks from the bananaquits, bullfinches and hummingbirds perched on the sun-splashed porch rails; breakfasting with these beauties and perhaps a gecko or two as they courted our favor—each day began spot-on perfect! Factor in all the rest, the incredible beaches (Half Moon Bay!), some fave eating spots (Katherine's Cafe), rum punch and the easy-going, friendly nature of our very charming hosts and it spells a no-brainer for what an R&R Caribbean getaway should be. Thank you Janie and Geoffrey! We shall return.
