FLAT IN HISTORIC HOUSE (QUIET, SAFE, WALK TO MUSEUMS)

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday townhome in Capitol Hill - Stanton Park Flat

1 bedroom with queen bed, 1 full bathroom

This is an attractive ground floor flat in a Victorian town house, and was completely renovated in 2010. It is on a quiet residential street, yet as centrally located as it gets. The Capitol complex and the Supreme Court are only three blocks away. 'Restaurant Row', a stretch of Massachusetts Avenue with numerous restaurants, is only one block away. The National Mall, Smithsonian Museums, the Newseum, and a Metro station are all within walking distance. You will not need a car. In terms of size, the flat is ideal for a couple, or perhaps a couple with a child. It is also suitable for seniors, because the entrance is at street level and there are no stairs. The flat is totally independent from the main house above, with a separate entrance, mechanical systems, phone line, etc. To sum it up, this little place is small in size, but big on charm!

Alec Smyth purchased this townhome in 2010

Some years ago my wife and I owned a vacation rental in Key Biscayne, Florida. It did very well and we enjoyed interacting with our guests, many of which became repeat visitors. But we had to sell it to move to a larger home with the arrival of a baby. Now we are in a position to re-enter the market, but this time we've done it near home to simplify the logistics. We picked this home expressly for vacation rental use, with the hindsight of having run a vacation rental before and of having lived in this area for close to twenty years.

The location! This is a place which is extremely quiet, where you are the shortest possible distance to the major DC attractions, and where you feel safe walking at any hour of night or day. It's a neighborhood that is utterly livable. There is wonderful grocery shopping nearby, restaurants you would visit with the family, bookstores, etc. Metro is a few blocks away if you need to go beyond walking range.

PERFECT 'HOME BASE' TO EXPLORE ALL THAT DC OFFERS

Perfect 'home base' to explore all that DC offers
  • 5 out of 5
We were delighted to find the Stanton Park flat to be exactly as described - charming little place, so convenient to the Metro, making it the perfect 'home base' to explore all that DC offers.
The property was clean and well-maintained, and its charm was fun to come back to at the end of a long day of sightseeing.
The owner provided wonderful information - from specifics about the neighborhood (restaurants & shopping) to exploring DC in general - allowing us to plan out our short stay to greatest advantage. We enjoyed walking to Eastern Market, and exploring the National Mall area and all it has to offer.
I would highly recommend this property to a friend or relative, and plan to return one day myself.

PERFECT

  • 5 out of 5
Perfectly located, clean, well presented and ideal apartment for a couple. We came across plenty of friendly local people on the 10 minute walk to the Capitol building and Union station and felt very safe in the area during the day and at night.
Alec provided us with plenty of information on the flat, places to eat and things to do before we had arrived which helped us plan our itinerary.
Highly recommended.

LOVELY, WELL-APPOINTED HOME NEAR EVERYTHING!

  • 5 out of 5
I fell in love with this flat from the moment I saw it online, and it was just as pictured when we arrived! While unloading the car, a neighbor had already stopped to welcome us to DC and give us advice on the best restaurants in the area. We parked our car at the convenient Union Station and didn't need it for the rest of the trip. As Mr. Alec recommended the Eastern Market, we stopped there first to stock up on groceries for dinners and picnic lunches: fresh ravioli, baguettes, organic apples, sliced cheeses, and spiced lunch meats... Phenomenal! And the flea market outside on weekends is the ideal place for grabbing non-cliche traveling gifts. The kitchen in the flat had everything we needed (including a corkscrew) as did the rest of the home. There were extra sheets, blankets, and pillows as well as a fully stocked shower caddy, and laundry detergent! We really felt like locals staying in the Capitol Hill area, but we still had easy, walking access to the major tourist attractions. It was quite possibly the best of all worlds. Mr. Alec is incredibly helpful and has created a wonderful vacation spot!

GOOD VALUE IN A GREAT LOCATION

  • 5 out of 5
This is a great little place in a great location. We managed to walk everywhere, even in a bitterly cold January with snow all about and temperatures as low as -15 degrees Celsius. Alec cleared the paths for us, and the flat stayed warm. The Capitol, Supreme Court and Library of Congress are just around the corner, and the Smithsonian Museums beyond were still an easy walk for us. If you need to go a little further (we walked to the White House, Lincoln Monument etc too, but that length of walk wouldn't be for everyone), Union Station is only a few blocks away. As for the flat, it was great to have a little kitchen to use and there was everything we needed to prepare and cook our own meals there. We enjoyed eating at the table with its outlook to the street. The washer/dryer is great, and works well, and the shower is a good one too. Our only issues were that there were three of us and the sofa bed was not useable (Alec is sorting this) and - as the last reviewer noted - you need to be aware that this is a ground floor flat and that you can hear everything that goes on upstairs. During the first half of our stay, this was a real issue for us, but the second lot of people who stayed upstairs didn't manage to be quite so noisy day and night, so we appreciated that. Otherwise this is a clean, well-maintained and comfortable property and at very reasonable rates for its great location. We found it to be really good value and would stay again.

Owner's Response: The mattress on the sofa bed has been replaced with a much better one that makes the support members in the bed less evident. Thanks as always to our guests for the suggested improvements!

GREAT LOCATION AND EVERYTHING NEEDED FOR A GREAT VISIT!

  • 4 out of 5
All items in working order, well stocked with kitchen items and great location to walk to all of the area attractions. Alec is clearly a professional and my family appreciated the the well documented guide. The only thing holding back an excellent rating is that everything going on in the upstairs unit could be heard and it was impossible to sleep a couple of nights/mornings due to the baby elephant in the upper unit stomping around at all hours. It won't stop us from coming back however, but be sure to bring some ear plugs just in case.

Location

The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.

Other Activities: US Congress, Smithsonian, Newseum, Library of Congress, National Archives, Folger Shakespeare
