EAGLES REST NEXT TO KILCHER FAMILY HOMESTEAD ON PANORAMIC KACHEMAK BAY

Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday chateau / country house in Homer

Log Home by Kilcher Family Homestead, hand crafted by Atz Kilcher

A beautiful, hand crafted log cabin, fully outfitted, next to an Alaskan historic site of rich significance & space. Can accomodate large groups (4 bedrooms and loft) or small. Each log in this cabin was carefully downed, limbed, crafted, notched, and fitted by a long time homesteader, Atz Kilcher with help from his brother Otto Kilcher. Sitting above stunning scenery, the cabin provides modern amenities in a rustic setting. A mix of antique furniture with modern and log style furniture in the kitchen, living room and downstairs bedrooms. Bamboo kitchen flooring is a treat and the cabin has been lovingly maintained (new downstairs shower, new laundry & high end machines, new tiling and carpeting throughout). We have provided a wood stove with a custom built rock hearth for ambience, but has upstairs and downstairs oil heat for convenience.

The large master bedroom overlooks a view you will never forget (think Kachemak Bay, glaciers, mountains, pink and purple sunsets and, admittedly more rarely, the aurora borealis), and there is a small bedroom right next door if you have a youngster you prefer to keep close, and two windo nooks that even adults sleep in. The older kids or adult guests will enjoy the two bedrooms on the lowest level. Sited on a 50 acre parcel next to a homestead where eight children of an early State Senator grew up in an austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin.

Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres to hike in if you desire along with prized access to the beach via one of only two beach access sites outisde of Homer on the near side of McNeil Canyon. There is a pole barn and meadow/pasture above the house that is fun to explore. There are also meadows, and other interesting land features surrounding the cabin. It is not unususal to see moose, black bear (shy ones), porcupines, sandhill cranes, eagles, hawks, song birds, marmots, seals and other wild life on the Kilcher Homestead.

I and my husband are both recently retired from the USMC. We have moved home to Alaska, and are working in Anchorage. We are happy to share our beautiful log home next to the Kilcher Homestead. I was the youngest of eight children who grew up in a pioneer setting after our parents homesteaded in Alaska the 1930's and 1940's. I literally walked two miles to school, in the snow, uphill, both ways. You'll see -- but now the road is gravelled and driveable.

The Owner purchased this chateau / country house in 2003

This log home was built by my brother Atz Kilcher next to our family Homestead. We purchased it from him and intend to live there when we retire. I lived a rustic life growing up. Decided I was done with that! This log home has all the luxuries I ever dreamed of.

This home has three full levels, with a view that is uncomparable. A special feature is a cabinet in the kitchen hand crafted from the recovered logs of the 100 square foot fox trappers cabin built in the 1800's that my parents lived in for three years when they first moved to Homer. The birth of the older children mandated my father build my mother the 400 square foot 'mansion' that we all grew up in. Watch the film (shown previously at the Smithsonian, and taken on tour in Europe), and then walk or drive the half mile to where history happened.

Amazing Log Home

  • 5 out of 5
My family spent 2 weeks in this beautiful log home. It really felt like a home away from home. Catkin and Tom are wonderful people and really made our stay even better than imagined. The views from every window are breathtaking. The kitchen is fully equipped, beds are very comfortable, and the home is cozy with the warmth of Kilcher personal decor. We had a great tour of the museum and enjoyed learning about the Kilcher homestead. We went fishing with Captain B. and brought home lots of halibut and rock fish. We took walks on the property and hikes in the local parks. This was a trip of a lifetime! We have beautiful family photos and memories that will last forever! Thank you Catkin, Tom, and Liam for making our stay truly unforgettable.

SIMPLY AMAZING

The cabin is absolutely beautiful! It sits half way up the bay and has incredible views of the bay and the mountains! It's about 15 minute drive from Homer and feels like you are in the wild! Great place and had a wonderful time. We actually cancelled a few things on our itinerary just to stay on the property! Will plan to stay here again!!!

At Home in Homer

This is a great place to stay! I took a bunch of family members with me and they all commented on what a great find it was. Aside from the fact that the house was amazing and welcoming we saw three moose run through the yard on the first night. Also, the owner personally guided us to the site which is private and remote.

Phenominal vacation/educational stay

  • 5 out of 5
My friends and family (12 of us total) could not have asked for a better rental! The cabin is beautiful, the view is beyond belief, and we got a bonus historical tour by the owner! This is such an interesting and beautiful place to stay. Every single one of us, from age 13 to 75, thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Eagles Rest. The view will take your breath away!

Great Place!

  • 5 out of 5
My wife and I stayed at both the Eagles Rest and Glacier View cabins. Catkin is a great hostess and runs a professional operation. Supplies were stocked which we did not expect and included spices, some condiments, coffee, etc. Not sure that's a guarantee but we really appreciated it. The views from both are wonderful. The glacier view deck is a bit more airy and has a fantastic wrap around deck. The eagles rest is a larger home with more family room furniture and a smaller deck. Both have their advantages. Both places are very clean and pretty new. Hope handles the cleaning and prep and does a super job. Both Catkin and Hope are very friendly and made us very comfortable. We saw a moose cow and two calves on the glacier view site along with porkies at the eagles rest. The small grocery and restaurant nearby are super with a nice selection of baked goods, liquor and meals. You do not need a 4 wheel drive, but the access roads are rustic and dusty if it doesn't rain. If it rained hard, you might find the steeper hills tricky but we had no problems in the rented ford focus. Catkin has some wonderful dvd's on the homestead and her family history. They are worth watching and are very interesting. You must go for a short tour of the sod roof cabin where the family grew up to really appreciate what it was like for the many (8?) that lived in the small cabin. It's not hard to understand how Catkin and her family hold such high values given such an environment. The walk down the hill to the beach is about 1/2 to 3/4 mile and isn't bad, but you will break a sweat on the way back up. I'd take some mosquito spray and water on the walk. Bugs are not an issue at the cabin sites. We saw eagles and whales down at the beach. Before the road was built, Catkin's family had to drive a wagon along the beach at low tide to make their way to Homer for supplies and such. You really need to walk down to the beach to get the sense of that experience. We plan to return next year and will book these cabins again if available. We grocery shopped in Anchorage before we arrived as there is no sales tax there, but in Homer it's about 7-8%. There is a Safeway at the Hoffman exit on the way out of Anchorage with really good grocery variety. We bought a couple of styrofoam coolers as the ride to Homer is about 5 hours. You won't go wrong here and look up Patty if you stay (resident in small rustic cabin whose husband is a demo expert for Hollywood). Enjoy!!
