Really superb location: The cottage has a selection of DVD's and internet connection for your computer. Shirakawa is 2 mins from the main historical Nene's Path. The traditional Geisha district of Gion is 4 min walk along the edge of the Shirakawa Stream. Also the upmarket restaurant area of Pontocho along the banks of the Kamagawa River is an easy stroll. This whole area is flat and an easy walk and as with all Kyoto is quiet and perfectly safe. Fifteen minutes walk are the Higashiyama mountains that have superb hiking. The nearby International Community House (INCH) (9.00am-9.00pm) has internet, a huge TV with CNN, daily Japanese language classes and weekly calligraphy, ink painting, origami etc classes in English for ¥50 (fifty cents). Shirakawa Cottage is a cosy two-room cottage in the heart of Kyoto. It's a wonderful base to explore Kyoto as the location is terrific. There's so much nearby, but it's still so peaceful at night. The walk down the little lane-way and past the "White Stream" is also a charming way to start the morning. You could even leave your guidebook at home as there are several excellent books and other information on-hand in the cottage.
Rory is a friendly and very considerate host. The renovation work inside the cottage is lovely and the bed is very comfortable. It's spotlessly clean, and the neighborhood is completely safe at night. We had a lovely time staying here and recommend it highly. We hope to stay longer next time.
Location superb, bathroom given the measures is outstanding (wish I had the same tub!), staff very helpful, the best place to spend a few days when in Kyoto!
This charming machiya could not be better located. Just steps from the Shirakawa River, the machiya is close to the subway, bus lines, good restaurants, and interesting and beautiful attractions. The Gion district is an easy walk. Wendy's staff is very responsive. The only reason I did not give this cottage a 5 was that storage space is a bit tight for 2 people (we were there for 3 weeks). If you need more storage space, try the same owners' Jizo-An machiya, just a few blocks away.
I loved my stay at Shirakawa Cottage- very comfortable, charming little garden and super ofuro (bath)! It was blissfully quiet at night and in such a convenient location, just 10 minutes walk to the centre of town.
It was rather cold when I was in Kyoto, but the bedroom heated up really quickly and stayed warm.
I highly recommend this machiya for solo travellers or couples!
The cottage is in a beautiful area and the river next to the house is lovely and picturesque. Ideally located for easily accessing kyotos sights and near a subway which is really helpful. House is small as all japanese houses are but very comfortable clean and well presented. Love the japanese style bath. Gives you a feel of what it's like living in japan superb experience.
We spent seven days in Kyoto in November and stayed at Shirakawa Cottage for that time. Its in a wonderful, quiet location right off of Shirakawa stream near the Highashiyama subway station. You need to walk 5-10 minutes for food and sightseeing, but this is a great central place to be. Checking in and out was super easy and they provided good directions for getting there.
The cottage itself was comfortable and had everything we needed for eating and living in. The building can get a little damp on humid days, but never uncomfortable.
If you want to experience Kyoto from outside the tourist destinations and away from the hotels, this is a great place to stay.
