Enjoy miles of magnificent marine views that end in mainland views of the Cascade mountains with Mt. Baker and Bellingham to the east, the mountains of British Columbia to the north, and the city lights of Vancouver BC and the ski lifts at night. Watch a variety of marine vessels make their way across the strait of Georgia, including boaters of all types whose destinations are several smaller islands within a few miles of the cottage. Walk along hillside trails on this 11 acre parcel that includes old growth trees and native flora. Bald and golden eagles nests are located on the property. Watch for eagles soaring past or looking down on you from an old growth tree. Many other species of birds are also seen and heard about the property. Relax in the cozy atmosphere of the cottage with comfortable furnishings that include sofa and easy chair with movable down overstuffed pillows and large ottoman. The wood stove and large picture windows looking over the water create a relaxing ambiance.
Why the Owner Chose Eastsound: : Our first Orcas Island project was a chalet that we built in 1996 a mile west of our present site. We found the 2/3 acre and proximity to neighbors and traffic, although light, going by to be distracting from our relaxation and feeling of peace. We think that the north shore views are the best on the island, so we wanted to stay here. In 1999 we purchased the present 11 acres and built the cottage in 2004.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:: Year Purchased: 2004 - The sheer natural beauty of the place starting with the fantastic views and peaceful woods, the variety of birds ranging from eagles to hummingbirds, the quiet, the ability to start a short walk or long hike from the front door, the healing effect the place has on our spirits, lots of wild black raspberries in season, the varieties of wildflowers, the full moon rising over and reflecting on the water. We could keep going on, but this is a good start.
Owner Description/Comments:: We are a professional couple, a teacher and psychiatric nurse practitioner. After falling in love with Orcas Island in the mid 90's, we made a long-term goal of living here full time. In August of 2007 we achieved that goal. We like the feeling of community, and appreciate the high quality of the environment, the arts, and the natural foods that are all abundant here. We love the outdoors and spend as much time as possible working, walking, beach combing, and relaxing outside.

My wife, 14 year old daughter and I stayed at Carla's cottage for three nights in early April for a spring break mini-vacation. The cottage is extremely clean, very well equipped for cooking and relaxing, and has a beautiful view to the north and east, as it is located on the north side of Orcas Island. It is only about 10 minutes drive from Eastsound, the main town on the island, yet feels very secluded. It is quite easy to get to with Carla's excellent directions. Carla has three large but very friendly dogs, which we enjoyed, despite not being "dog people."
Carla was available when we needed something or had a question, but lives in a separate house on the property, so also respected our privacy.
This is a perfect place for a couple for a restful vacation. Sleeping arrangements aren't ideal for more than a couple, however, just FYI.
There are several great restaurants in Eastsound, from casual breakfast/lunch places, to some high end options for dinner. We had a wonderful gourmet dinner at the New Leaf restaurant in the Outlook hotel, as well as a very tasty casual dinner at a Mexican restaurant on Prune Alley, the name of which escapes me, but it started with an "M".
We enjoyed nice, not too strenuous hikes in Moran State Park, Obstruction Pass State Park, and Turtleback Mountain Reserve.
Highly recommend Carla's cabin!
Our stay at Carla's cottage was wonderful! Carla was a very welcoming host and made checking in and out very simple. The cottage itself was lovely:
Beautiful views, a big kitchen with everything you need, a spacious and comfortable living room with a TV (with satellite and DVR) and fireplace, Wifi, a very comfortable bed, and a short drive to Eastsound. We didn't have great weather at our stay so the cottage was a perfect place to stay inside and relax. Also, the three dogs were awesome and super friendly! Overall a great experience. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone!
What a wonderful place to spend time. The views were spectacular, whether sunrise or sunset. It had everything we needed or wanted. We were so delighted with it we have already booked it for next year. We couldn't thank the owner more.

The house was comfortable and nicely warm in December. Don was helpful and friendly. The views are great. The dogs can be rambunctious but are very friendly. I enjoyed their company walking on the property. Eastsound and Moran State Park are close by. I'm glad I chose to stay here instead of right in town and would choose to stay here again.
We stayed for a week and had a wonderful stay. The kitchen is well stocked, the views are wonderful and we want to come back. Our two miniature schnauzers got along well with the dogs and Jack the dog is just a big love.
This is truly a relaxing, lovely and pristine place. We ferried over to "get away" from the loud fireworks and general noise of living in Seattle over 4th of July weekend. All our expectations were met. Don was a wonderful host and the guest house is immaculate, comfortable and well-stocked. The pictures don't do it justice. Having rented many guest houses, lodgings across the country, it is rare to find a place that not only has all the kitchen accouterments you need, but ALSO spices, BBQ coals, condiments ready. We chose to cook in most nights to enjoy the gorgeous surroundings and truly feel we were "getting away from it all". The lovely restaurants in Orcas are a short drive away if you choose, but it was awesome to not "have" to go there as this lovely house accommodated our every need. What a great place to chill!
The bed was super comfy, wireless worked, satellite was great..it's definitely a home away from home. We saw a Bald Eagle fly by the window, deer, pileated woodpecker (the largest still confirmed as existent in North America) and other lovely creatures. Though the trees surround, there are enough views to be breathtaking. Linens were lovely, all was clean, fresh and well cared for.
About the dogs: I've read a couple reviews about issues with Don/Carla's dogs. Our experience completely discounted those reviews. We have a small toy American Eskimo that is our little boy. So, we are a bit "protective" of him and he is on a leash and doesn't run outside. We found, to our great delight, that Don and Carla are true dog people, their pups were friendly, kind, and in no way bothered us or "Newton" at all. In fact, we hardly ever saw his dogs other than a couple meet and greets. There was no inappropriate barking, no annoying behavior, none of that. There is, as Don has stated, a gate at the top of the stairs to the house, so if used, there is no way that one of the other dogs can be within range of any close disturbance. Newton was relaxed and happy the whole time and enjoyed his "private" deck. Larger dogs will indeed love to run with Don's pack or smaller if they are used to free form.
Orcas is a great place for all, humans, dogs and wildlife. We'll be back!
