WATERFRONT, OUTSTANDING PANORAMIC VIEWS, QUIET WOODED ACREAGE

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Eastsound

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-4)

Enjoy miles of magnificent marine views that end in mainland views of the Cascade mountains with Mt. Baker and Bellingham to the east, the mountains of British Columbia to the north, and the city lights of Vancouver BC and the ski lifts at night. Watch a variety of marine vessels make their way across the strait of Georgia, including boaters of all types whose destinations are several smaller islands within a few miles of the cottage. Walk along hillside trails on this 11 acre parcel that includes old growth trees and native flora. Bald and golden eagles nests are located on the property. Watch for eagles soaring past or looking down on you from an old growth tree. Many other species of birds are also seen and heard about the property. Relax in the cozy atmosphere of the cottage with comfortable furnishings that include sofa and easy chair with movable down overstuffed pillows and large ottoman. The wood stove and large picture windows looking over the water create a relaxing ambiance.

Why the Owner Chose Eastsound: : Our first Orcas Island project was a chalet that we built in 1996 a mile west of our present site. We found the 2/3 acre and proximity to neighbors and traffic, although light, going by to be distracting from our relaxation and feeling of peace. We think that the north shore views are the best on the island, so we wanted to stay here. In 1999 we purchased the present 11 acres and built the cottage in 2004.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:: Year Purchased: 2004 - The sheer natural beauty of the place starting with the fantastic views and peaceful woods, the variety of birds ranging from eagles to hummingbirds, the quiet, the ability to start a short walk or long hike from the front door, the healing effect the place has on our spirits, lots of wild black raspberries in season, the varieties of wildflowers, the full moon rising over and reflecting on the water. We could keep going on, but this is a good start.

Owner Description/Comments:: We are a professional couple, a teacher and psychiatric nurse practitioner. After falling in love with Orcas Island in the mid 90's, we made a long-term goal of living here full time. In August of 2007 we achieved that goal. We like the feeling of community, and appreciate the high quality of the environment, the arts, and the natural foods that are all abundant here. We love the outdoors and spend as much time as possible working, walking, beach combing, and relaxing outside.

COMFORTABLE AND NICE VIEWS.

  • 5 out of 5
The house was comfortable and nicely warm in December. Don was helpful and friendly. The views are great. The dogs can be rambunctious but are very friendly. I enjoyed their company walking on the property. Eastsound and Moran State Park are close by. I'm glad I chose to stay here instead of right in town and would choose to stay here again.

WONDERFUL VIEWS

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed for a week and had a wonderful stay. The kitchen is well stocked, the views are wonderful and we want to come back. Our two miniature schnauzers got along well with the dogs and Jack the dog is just a big love.

AMAZING PROPERTY

  • 5 out of 5
This is truly a relaxing, lovely and pristine place. We ferried over to "get away" from the loud fireworks and general noise of living in Seattle over 4th of July weekend. All our expectations were met. Don was a wonderful host and the guest house is immaculate, comfortable and well-stocked. The pictures don't do it justice. Having rented many guest houses, lodgings across the country, it is rare to find a place that not only has all the kitchen accouterments you need, but ALSO spices, BBQ coals, condiments ready. We chose to cook in most nights to enjoy the gorgeous surroundings and truly feel we were "getting away from it all". The lovely restaurants in Orcas are a short drive away if you choose, but it was awesome to not "have" to go there as this lovely house accommodated our every need. What a great place to chill!

The bed was super comfy, wireless worked, satellite was great..it's definitely a home away from home. We saw a Bald Eagle fly by the window, deer, pileated woodpecker (the largest still confirmed as existent in North America) and other lovely creatures. Though the trees surround, there are enough views to be breathtaking. Linens were lovely, all was clean, fresh and well cared for.

About the dogs: I've read a couple reviews about issues with Don/Carla's dogs. Our experience completely discounted those reviews. We have a small toy American Eskimo that is our little boy. So, we are a bit "protective" of him and he is on a leash and doesn't run outside. We found, to our great delight, that Don and Carla are true dog people, their pups were friendly, kind, and in no way bothered us or "Newton" at all. In fact, we hardly ever saw his dogs other than a couple meet and greets. There was no inappropriate barking, no annoying behavior, none of that. There is, as Don has stated, a gate at the top of the stairs to the house, so if used, there is no way that one of the other dogs can be within range of any close disturbance. Newton was relaxed and happy the whole time and enjoyed his "private" deck. Larger dogs will indeed love to run with Don's pack or smaller if they are used to free form.

Orcas is a great place for all, humans, dogs and wildlife. We'll be back!

FABULOUS STAY!

  • 5 out of 5
Hi Don & Carla,
Thanks for such a fabulous stay at your guest house! We had a great time and you were both very welcoming, we thank you! The house is simply wonderful, very roomy for a 1 bedroom and the other doggies were a delight. Our doggies had a great time too! The pictures of the view from the windows and deck do not nearly do it justice!

GREAT LOCATION FOR EXPLORING ORCAS ISLAND

  • 5 out of 5
We had a four night stay here. The apartment is clean and comforable, and Don and Carla are kind people and excellent hosts. There are big windows with great views of the water and snow covered mountains .There is a nice porch to sit on to look out at the water. We cooked nearly all our meals in a very usable, well -stocked kitchen. We are big hikers, and there are wonderful hikes throughout the Island, all within a short drive of where we stayed. Eastsound is a chaming little town, and even though it was off season most places were open. We had a tasty meal at the bar in the New Leaf restaurant , and the bookstore is a great place to browse and have coffee or the best hot chocolate. I noticed some comments in the reviews about the black lab Jack. I may be biased since we share the same name, but we found him to a very entertaining, goofy and friendly beast. He can be pesky if you show him some attention, but we enjoyed his company.

Owner's Response: Jack and his human family appreciate the positive words. He, as do we, take pride in our creating a guest-friendly place. The comments in our guest book along with the vast majority of the reviews show that we succeed almost all of the time.

QUIET WITH BEAUTIFUL VIEWS -- BUT BEWARE OF DOG

  • 3 out of 5
As other reviewers have noted, this apartment is in a very quiet and peaceful location. The interior space is nice with a roomy kitchen/dining/living room. The bedroom and bath are small, but certainly functional. The furnishings were fine and the deck was very nice. There were beautiful views to the North and Northeast. We saw spectacular eagles flying right overhead!

That being said, if you stay here you need to be fine with being 'hounded' by the domineering resident dog Jack any time you step outside, especially if you have a dog yourself. If your dog is the type that wants to meet other dogs and is comfortable with large dogs who demand constant attention, then this place could be perfect for you. Seriously, your dog could have a great time. From the other reviews it looks like there are many people for whom this works out great.

However, if your dog is independent, or timid, or just wants his/her own space, then really think carefully before coming here. Our dog is a border collie who is neutral to dogs who leave her alone. This dog will not do that, and the owners are unable or unwilling to control the dog. (Yes, we talked with Don and he said that the dog was not used to being restrained. He would not offer any option to keep the dog away from the apartment, even temporarily.) The dog would camp out on the stairs outside our door so there was no way to go outside without dealing with him. He would not leave our dog alone, even to go to the bathroom, so everytime she had to go out, it became a production. We had to devise a plan where my husband went out first and distracted the dog by playing with it, then I would sneak our dog down the stairs and around the corner to go to the bathroom. As you can imagine, this was not fun multiple times a day, especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night. The same thing was required when we came or left the house, ridiculous. (The dog is an outdoor dog, so he was never safely in their house. Also, Don has noted in other reviews that if people don't play with the dog he won't be a bother, absolutely not true, we tried ignoring him but he is relentless.) When we played with our dog inside the cabin using a squeaky toy, this dog would start barking, and jump at our window, startling all of us. All of this made our somewhat anxious dog, very nervous. We tried to avoid being in the apartment as much as possible, not exactly the prescription for a relaxing vacation.

Owner's Response: This is the response that was sent to the writer, along with an added footnote.

We think that your review has some accuracy, but is a bit harsh. You have given us our lowest rating ever due to us not fully meeting your requirements for your special needs dog. You did not specify that you wanted us to restrain Jack. You said that you were going to have one of you play with Jack to distract him. This appeared to work well, and your husband really seemed to enjoy him.

We did bring Jack inside when you first arrived, and also provided a leash, which you could use at any time to tie him away from where your dog needed to go. Had either of you asked for more assistance, you would have gotten it. You also neglected to mention the gate at the entrance to the deck, which prevents our dogs from getting on the deck and away from the door.

That being said, there is another review with a response from us indicating that a timid or overly protective dog might not be a good match here. We have had dozens of dogs here, and only three have had any particular issues. Had you allowed the dogs a chance to run together, the experience could have been very different.

With all of the positive things you said about our place, does your dog issue really bring us down to a three-star rating?

The bottom line for potential guests is that if you have a special needs dog and tend to be very protective of that dog, our place might not be a good match for you. We would also like to add that we almost did not rent to this guest after she requested we arrange a third online payment timeline through HomeAway, because the first two did not meet her comfort level. There was just a month between the initial inquiry and the requested dates. In hindsight, all would have been happier if we had stayed with our original reaction.
Most of our guests enjoy having friendly dogs greet them. Jack is a very friendly black lab, and definitely not an alpha dog. He yields to our seven-pound cat. Readers might want to check out the reviews submitted October 4 and October 30, 2012 especially, and draw their own conclusions about some of the comments in this review and the dog and person they represent. We are always happy to answer whatever questions that people have. Our goal is 100% happy guests, and we almost make it.
