Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Tucson - Indian Summer Ranch House

3 Bedrooms...Two Baths...Sleeps 6 comfortably.

This unique secluded desert home sits at the end of a dirt road in the foothills of the Tucson Mountains. It is a place of refuge where one can truly experience the Sonoran Desert…and it is only 15 minutes away from a great Mexican restaurant, Safeway, a movie complex, and other places of business. This is not in a gated community. It is in a forest of Saguaros with lots of trees and foliage for birds and two ponds which regularly attract javalina (wild pigs) deer, coyotes, bobcats and other creatures of the desert. It is a perfect place for hikers, bicyclists, bird-watchers, writers and painters.

Towering Saguaros surround the house along with Mesquite, Palo Verde, and Sweet Acacia trees. Many varieties of cactus are everywhere including the beautiful ocotillo, and the mysterious night-blooming Cereus. This is the Sonoran Desert – unlike any desert in the world. When people leave this part of the country they always say that they never knew a desert could be so beautiful. From the front door of the house you can walk down to the Sweetwater Arroyo and hike for miles or you can drive one mile further into the Tucson Mountains and hike back into the Sweetwater Preserve - 600 acres of primitive desert landscape available only to hikers, horses and bicyclists. Or you can just sit and savor the desert at the house and not see anyone for days and fall asleep at night to the songs of coyotes in the darkness.

My Grandparents originally settled this land back in 1940. They built three adobe houses (made their own adobe bricks) – one of which they lived in and the other two were rented to friends. There was nothing else around at the time except their places. Two of the adobes still exist. Our friend, Betty Wickersham, with her two horses, now lives in my Grandparent’s old house. My parents acquired some of the land and built their house in 1978 out of adobe and beams from the old Bisbee Mine. They are gone now but they always opened their house to anyone who loved the desert. This is the house where you will be staying when you come to vacation at Indian Summer Ranch. Betty’s horses will greet you on your way into the property.

About John Coinman

My mom and dad got the land from my granparents and built this house. When they died I acquired it and did not want to sell it so we are trying this approach to keep it in our family.

I am a musician and my wife Jo is an artist. I have been touring and recording with Kevin Costner and Modern West since 2005. We had a band together in the 80's when we both were living in Los Angeles. It was discontinued for a while because he became famous, had a family, and didn't have the time to devote to music. In the meantime I continued with my career...had songs in movies and television and had a recording contract in Europe. I was the Music Supervisor for Dances With Wolves.

My wife Jo works with oils on canvas and wood. She is also a printer and a bookmaker. The Indian Summer House is filled with her original art.

Desert views, wildlife, accessibility and comfort!

  • 5 out of 5
The home was built by the owner's mother and father. She was a teacher and both loved the desert and its wildlife. This IS the place to view wildlife! John and Jo, the owners, do many extra things to bring in the birds and animals - from a bale of alfalfa to little watering stations all over the property, hummingbird & finch feeders, and seed to throw out each day. Every day I saw deer, quail, ground squirrels, rabbits, doves, hummers, finches, etc. Most were within 3- 20 ft. of the windows!

The beds, especially the one in the master bedroom, are so comfortable! The kitchen is well equipped and the pool is beautiful. I did not find the heater/air-conditioned loud - as one reviewer mentions. It was easy to operate and kept the home comfortable. The grocery store is not so very far from the home. I live in Dallas and easily drive that far to get to my grocery store there. You are "just the right amount" of isolated but can see the roofs of other houses. I felt absolutely safe!

I travel alone, am an older female, and usually rent a home when I go on vacations. I have never found one with such opportunities to see wildlife - nor little things provided, like soap from the washing machine and shower.
The home is a treasure, as are the owners!

ALL THAT WAS PROMISSED AND MORE

  • 5 out of 5
The house is all what the description states and more. This is not your average rental home. It is a house with a history and lots of character which you can learn from the pictures that show the construction of it, the passionate stories told by John, the landlord, and all the objects his parents collected during their lives. Turning objects around to find a certificate of authenticity, the name of an author or the precedence became a favorite pastime.
The property is not new but everything is neat and works. Some appliances are newer than others because they are replaced as long as it is necessary, just like we do at our homes. Everything was so clean that I did not feel the necessity of washing every glass before using it.
The only setback is that the air conditioner unit is next to the master suite. The noise travels through the vents and it gets loud at times. I am a sound sleeper so it did not bother me at all but I understand that other people may find it annoying.
The pool (neat, large and heated) is a piece of luxury. There are also tons of books, board games, a guitar, a telescope, binoculars and a ping-pong table. You can’t get bored here.
The owner, John, is an absolute delight. We arrived late in the night so, instead of waiting for us in the house, he did so at the paved road to make sure that we would find the place. He gave all the necessary explanations and asked us to tell him if we saw a snake so he could come and remove it. He even came back the next day with a bale of hay to attract deer and was always available by phone.
We would certainly recommend the property to friends or relatives who wanted to experience the desert life or to get away of it all. We would recommend it with caution to families with children due to the possibility of encountering snakes or scorpions. People have lived and raised children in the area for millennia, but they do know how to react and how to teach children the proper behavior since they are very young.
As for nearby attractions, Saguaro National Park, Sonora-Arizona Desert Museum and Mission San Xavier del Bac are a must. We also did the downtown walking tour, following the blue line painted on the ground. It was very interesting but we could not finish it. We recommend doing it in two days or start very early in the morning to finish it before it gets too hot.
Finally, we would recommend Café Poca Cosa. Everything, from the décor to the presentation of the dishes is high end.

Owner's Response: Hi, I'm John, the owner of Indian Summer Ranch, and I just want to clarify one thing. Our swimming pool is not heated mechanically and we have never advertised it that way. We have solar panels on the roof and the pool water is pumped through them.....so sometimes the pool is heated but only if the sun shines and the weather is accommodating. Please don't assume that when you come to Indian Summer Ranch, the pool is 80 degrees all the time. It is not. Sometimes it's even hotter during the summer. We prefer it this way....not perfect
The desert is not perfect.

Thank you for this wonderful review.

Everything we'd hoped for and more...

Everything we'd hoped for and more...
  • 5 out of 5
it's been several weeks since our trip to Tucson yet my wife and I still comment about how much we loved this property. We had never been to the area, are from the eastern part of the U.S. and this was a perfectly situated property from which to explore the wide array of venues in and around Tucson. But as much as anything we simply enjoyed the property. We spent early mornings and late evenings in the sunroom enjoying the wildlife which was always abundant. We had food available for the wildlife and kept the water containers full providing an oasis for deer, multiple varieties of birds, etc. The arroyo below provided great daily hiking among the giant saguaro cacti. Our thanks for John's attention to detail while making sure our stay was so memorable. Please let me assure any potential guests that the description of this property is accurate and I could not imagine how anyone would not be thrilled with their stay here. We stayed a week and greatly anticipate the day when we can return.

Great secluded place

  • 5 out of 5
We spent of week of bliss here...we felt we were far away from everybody. There were two days where we didn't see a human being...we stayed around the property and enjoyed the birds, deer, and other wildlife that frequent the area. We even saw wild boars! We enjoyed feeding the birds.

Even though there are other houses in the area, they felt that they were far away and one does not see them from the house.

The house is cozy and well equipped. We met the owner and he is a great guy...he's wants you to have a good time there.

Fantastic Setting

  • 5 out of 5
The listing description and photos were accurate. We found this location even more beautiful and comfortable than described. The property was clean, well maintained, and comfortable. As soon as we arrived we felt relaxed and at home. The owner answered all of our questions and was very helpful and friendly to us. We enjoyed meeting and talking with him. We would highly recommend this property to our friends and relatives and very much hope to return there. We enjoyed the secluded setting and had opportunities to see many plants, birds and animals in their natural settings. We enjoyed hiking and biking in the area such as Tucson Mountain Park and visiting the Sonoran Desert Museum. The Mosaic Restaurant was an excellent Mexican Restaurant within 10-15 minute drive. A Safeway and other stores were about the same distance away.

Sonoran Splendor

  • 5 out of 5
The description of the desert home could not be more accurate. The adobe home is cozy, comfortable and inviting. It's a great place for groups of 3 or more as it has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. The beds, by the way, are very comfortable! You feel very secluded, and yet, you are 15 minutes away from restaurants and grocery stores. John greets you at the gate, and answers all your questions. It's a great place to sit, relax, and enjoy watching desert wildlife.
