About Maria T Farr

I am an ecuadorean-american photographer and my husband Ken is an American who for 28 years was a US diplomat. After living in other countries and having marvelous experiences, we decided to settle in Ecuador because it is such a unique country, where one can enjoy eternal spring weather, be close to the beach and to the jungle, to the Galapagos Islands, enjoy the mountains, the lakes, the ocean, the jungle...all in a matter of a few hours and have a quality of life without too much expense. We are on the equator, thus, we can travel north or south with ease.. GUIDED TOURS AVAILABLE!!!! As of now, Ken has agreed to give the wonderful tours he has given to our friends in the past, as an option to our guests! check for details!

Maria T Farr purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Maria T Farr chose Quito

I grew up in the Colonial City of Quito, and always wanted to return to it. My husband fell in love with it as well and we searched for a property that we can use and that can be shared with other guests who would fall in love with the city as well. This is a 300 year old house and when we saw it as a possibility to purchase an apartment, we immediately decided to acquire it though only in a blueprint then. We were able to design it to suit our taste as if it was for our exclusive use. We love the proximity to all what makes the Colonial city what it is..

What makes this apartment unique

We enjoy the unique life in the Colonial City, which is very different from the north or the south part of the city. This is like a different city, with a fantastic dynamic of it's own. The energy, the people, the time, the architecture, the pace, the markets, the churches are different and unique. The city was declared World Heritage Site in 1978 by the UNESCO and rightly so when you live it. The suite gives us this possibility as it is located three blocks from the Presidential Palace and very close to all the important monuments.

"Enjoyable Visit to Colonial Quito"

We recently spent a week at the ideally located apartment in Colonial Quito. Located only a few blocks for La Plaza Grande, there are many sights nearby along with many restaurants. The nice kitchen is up to date and includes a dishwasher and washing machine. There is a separate living area with gas fireplace for cooler evenings. A separate bedroom with bath is adjacent. Wifi access available. Maria is a wonderful and attentive hostess. We enjoyed a great tour with her husband Ken to antisana and the market at Sangolqui. We highly recommend this apt.

Excellent

Very convenient location near the old city attractions and within walking distance of site seeing, grocery shopping, and numerous dining options. If you have a car, they have secure free parking. Otherwise, Quito taxis are the least expensive I have ever seen in a major city. For example, it is only three or five dollars around downtown and only $30 to the airport which is 45 minutes to an hour away. The owners are wonderful hosts, and provided us a 3-hour English walking tour of the old city for a very reasonable price. The apartment had everything we needed, the beds were very comfortable, and the apartment complex had its own security guard. We highly recommend this apartment.

Great Apartment in the Heart of Quito

  • 5 of 5

This is a very comfortable apartment, tastefully furnished, within close walking distance of all the main sights in the historical district. We stayed for three nights with our 11 year old daughter. Maria was very helpful in getting orientated before arrival, left us a loaf of bread and some fruit so we didn't arrive hungry, and was super helpful in providing information and tips about Quito. I wish we could have stayed longer.

Great apartment

  • 5 of 5

The location is great, about two blocks from the historic city center. Nice apartment in a safe location. Ken's walking tour helped with orientation. He also arranged a day tour with a guide he knew. You can't go wrong with this apartment.

Beautiful suite in an amazing location!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed at Maria and Ken's apartment in November 2013 and it was perfect for us! The apartment is in great location right in the heart of colonial Quito. It really is the perfect base for exploring this beautiful historical city. The apartment is beautiful - the space is very well planned, and very comfortably furnished and decorated. Traveling with kids, the kitchen and washing machine were really important to us! The kitchen had everything we needed, and there is a grocery store about 2 blocks away, which was great! Of course, there are also great restaurants nearby, so you certainly don't have to cook if you don't want to. The building was very secure, with very helpful guards on duty 24 hours/day. The guards can help you call a taxi - when our taxi didn't arrive, the guard helped us get another ride to the airport in the morning which was great!

Great location, very secure, couple of niggles

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I rented this apartment for 10 days and thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Quito. Maria and Kens help and hospitality were fabulous, including the half day walking tour with Ken of the old city which really helped us get our bearings. The kitchen was well equipped and very fast and reliable broadband. Our only niggles were some early morning noise from the buses in the street and the shower could do with being a bit more enthusiastic. Overall we would recommend this apartment for a stay in Quito.

Introduction to Ecuador

  • 5 of 5

Ken and Maria's suite was absolutely perfect for our week in Quito. This was our first visit to Ecuador and this "home away from home" was so welcome and comforting to return to each day after exploring this beautiful historic city. Ken's walking tour of colonial Quito, with his wealth of knowledge of the history and present day politics of the area was an invaluable experience. Maria took charge of all the rental arrangements and was full of great advice about restaurants, grocery shopping, sights to see, taxi service etc that helped us orientate to life in Quito. The suite hade everything we needed right down to a coffee grinder! The beds were comfortable, kitchen well stocked, washing machine a bonus and the gas fireplace cosy in the cooler evenings. It was central to the old colonial city so we could walk anywhere we wanted to go. The building was secure with very friendly guards 24/7. One highlight was dining at the Hotel Grande complete with opera singers serenading us! Our only regret was that we didn't have longer in Quito as a week is not long enough to visit all the historical museums, churches and art galleries. Maria and Ken even took us to the village she grew up in to a fabulous market and to their county villa. I highly recommend the suite to anyone wanting to explore"old town" Quito and would love to return again myself. Thank you Ken and Marie for helping us get the most out of our visit... Wish we could pick your brains more, South American history is just so interesting.

Best wishes

Al and Nancy
