PRIVATE OCEANFRONT RETREAT

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday cottage in Bailey Island

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Built in 1918, The Gills is an original summer cottage perched above the sea at the very end of Bailey Island. Secluded far from the road, nestled in a grove of pine and spruce, the house is pure tranquility. Each beautifully appointed room is both comfortable and authentic.

Enjoy naps on the porch swing or walk to nearby beaches, restaurants and shops. Explore tide pools along the rocky coastline. Go sailing or kayaking. Fish for striped bass from the rocks, just steps from the porch. Enjoy fresh lobster pulled from the ocean that morning by one of the local lobstermen.

Whatever you choose to do, it all comes back to the view. Clear and calm one day, misty and grey the next. Sit back and watch the sea and sky change with the weather. Hour by hour. Minute by minute. Always beautiful. Always different.

The Gills will give you the opportunity to slow down, and remember how good it feels to do nothing at all, surrounded by friends and family.

20 minutes from Brunswick and Bowdoin College. 30 minutes from Freeport and L.L.Bean. 45 minutes from Portland.

I was born on the island (thats me on the rocks in front of the house with my dad) and after traveling the world, I know for sure that Bailey Island is one of the most beautiful places anywhere.

Seclusion. views, an older home that has wonderful upgrades and maintains all the charm.....and above all...a super clean home. We loved this place...our favorite place in the last five years. You will instantly see how the owner cares about your holiday by the touches in the home. The manager, a local lobsternan and the soul of the island, welcomes you and is there if you need anything...including the lead on the best blueberry pie at the Giant Stairs. We had a fire every monring and night with the wood made available. This owner gets it...gives extra....and wins your heart. We were just two people...chose the home becuase of the reviews and photos even though we did not need so much wonderful space.

Charming cottage, exceptional location

We enjoyed a picture perfect week on Bailey Island, and The Gills was part of the charm. The location is breathtaking with wonderful sunrises and sunsets, and a setting on dramatic cliffs. The cottage oozes a quirky character and inspires...whether your aim is to create, relax or explore. What's more, the cottage caretaker, Dave, makes you feel right at home, and delivers amazing lobsters right to your door. With a few upgrades (a bit more neat and manicured landscaping, some cosmetic and structural repairs, better attention to dusting, more plush towels, wider selection of DVDs), the cottage would rate a solid five stars. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and the Gills was in the center of all that beautiful Bailey Island has to offer. We didn't want to leave!

Owner's Response: I'm so happy that you enjoyed your week at The Gills.
After reading your review I decided to stock the cottage with more traditional plush towels in addition to the Turkish cotton towels provided (I'm partial to the Turkish kind - but I understand that towel taste is personal!) So if you make it back to Bailey Island, there's a stack of luxurious towels with your name on it!
I prefer to let the grasses and wildflowers grow wild at the cottage rather than keep things clipped and manicured - it feels more in keeping with the rugged windswept feel of the place.
I'll be replacing all of the windows in the bedrooms during the off season this year, and I guarantee you that dust will never again be an issue. We take great pride in keeping The Gills spotless!
Finally, I'm curious what types of films you would like to see in the dvd library? I'm always adding more, so send Dave an email with any suggestions!
I hope to have you back at The Gills again in the future.

A Very Special Place

“The Gills” is one of those places where you walk in and immediately ask yourself “if the walls could speak what would they say”? It is a place that takes you back in time and you can’t help but be charmed by the nostalgia.

Our family of five had a memorable stay at this incredible house on Bailey Island. My children are six, nine and 15 years of age. We are from a suburb of Chicago and I was very curious as to how my kids would react and enjoy their stay in Maine, given that their usual vacations involve warm sandy beaches. To them it was all new and exciting: hiking on the bluffs, swimming in coves, setting and bringing up pots on the lobster boat, eating the best fresh lobster you have ever eaten, visiting the Land’s End Gift shop and our daily stop at “Tifffins” ice cream shop, located at the end of the street. Much of our guidance was provided by the manager, Dave, who was born and raised on Bailey Island and was very helpful and had interesting stories.

Our family very much looks forward to another trip to The Gills.

Walking into "The Gills" lovely home was like taking a step back into another age. We marveled at all the eclectic furnishing that make up this beautiful summer home. We were there a short time when we got a call from David to make sure that we arrived safely and that if we needed anything just give him a call. He certainly made us feel welcomed!

As my adult children arrived a little later than us, I was excited to see their reaction. They loved it as much as we did. This vacation was also a family reunion for us as my children live far and wide. The house was so comfortable for all of us. We even had two days that rained, but between the fantastic fireplace, games and laughter we all had a wonderful time

When the sun returned , we went on a great hike and visited Rockport, Rockland and Camden. We sailed on the schooner "Alert" and took a million pictures.

David provided us with delicious lobsters, probably the best I have ever eaten. If you do go out to dinner, the best restaurant on the island is right down the street called the Giant Stairs. We ate breakfast and dinner there several times and it was always wonderful.

We hopefully will return to "The Gills" many times.

This is just what you expect of Maine. The location is perfect; so close to Portland, Bath, Puffin trips, lighthouse tours, whale watching, and lobster eating. Bath has a wonderful Maritime Museum with a huge collection of boat paintings and a tour of the Iron Works (reserve ahead!! it was fully booked for 3 days) Arcadia National Park is also worth a trip; however a 3.5 hour drive from Bailey. Still, there are charming coastal towns and the lighthouse that's featured on the Maine quarter a mere 45 minutes away that's a MUST see!!
You are in the heart of the culture: the best part. You have the chance to see the working part of Maine while staying in a typical Maine vacation bungalow. It's rustic elegance and charm make the experience magical.
Sit on your porch with evening port while deer scamper 5 feet from you. Hear the waves crashing while a lobster boat tugs along thru the channel.
Our innkeeper David and his wife help to make the experience everything you want it to be. On the same hand, the "Mainers" are ALL very, very friendly! The restaurants are the best- no need to cook!! Our favorite place was the grill down the street and Cundy's Harbor Restaurant. Cook's Lobster House and the Dolphin Marina Restaurant are also really close. We ate lobster everyday!!
If you are looking for perfection and your typical "Home and Garden" island suburbia check another venue because Bailey Island is the real deal; no reproduction newby stuff. Yes, you are on an island with a home on the water with a well(No...city water is not here) so the drinking water is salty...duh!!!! Bottled water is supplied for your coffee in the morning.
This home is exactly like the pictures. It is clean and well maintained for a home over 100 yrs old. It is perfect for a family of 6 or less. We experienced exactly what we expected and more. We love it!!
Owner's Response: I'm so happy you enjoyed your time at The Gills. It sounds like you found lots to keep you busy during your stay on the island. I've installed a new water filtration/purification system, but as it's an island, the tap water will never be as pure as the Poland Spring water provided for drinking.
