Smokies Retreat

This house is both clean and comfortable. However, what sets it apart is the fantastic setting. If you're looking for a mountain retreat, this is it. Scenery is great and private location enables you to enjoy it without interruption. Enjoy!

A family Retreat

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at the house with our 9 mo for our first family trip in a rental house. We weren't sure what to expect, but now we have high expectations! The house was in great condition; the wood floors were beautiful, the appliances were great, internet and dish tv (I think) were easy to use, and the laundry room was a nice addition as well. We were very comfortable in the house, it was the perfect size for us. Our little one goes to sleep early, so the place was very peaceful for us to hang out in the evenings. We enjoyed laying in the hammock and "staring at the mountains" whenever we had the chance!

We would absolutely recommend the place. Only 15 min from Asheville and a perfect place to hide out for a couple days!

Secluded and conveniently located

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at the cottage for a week from Aug. 3-10, 2014. We're a family of three -- two adults and a teenager. This cottage was perfect for us. We're so glad we chose it.

The cottage is just the right amount of space for a family of three to four (and possibly more). The main bedroom has a king bed, full bath, and good-sized closet. There's another full bath on the main level. The spiral staircase goes up to a loft with two twin beds and a double futon. Our teenager was quite content in the loft. He had plenty of space and privacy.

The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed: numerous items in the pantry, pots, pans, dishes, cleaning supplies, paper products, etc.

The view from the cabin's deck and grounds is lovely. You'll see mountains along the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is just a hop, skip, and a jump from the cottage.

This cottage is ideally located. It is private and secluded (requiring an uphill drive through some winding, partially gravel roads), and yet remarkably close enough to everything you'd want to do around Asheville and in the surrounding areas. Groceries, gas, and a drugstore are within a five minute drive. On a Thursday evening, it took 13 minutes to get from downtown Asheville to the cottage.

As to a previous 3-star review (which surprised me), I suggest exploring the cottage, finding out what's in it, and using it. If you aren't sure whether you are allowed to use it or if you can't find it in the cottage, ask Bob. He checked in with us a couple of times by e-mail to make sure we were comfortable, which we appreciated. He also left an info sheet about the cabin and provided his phone number for questions. It was good to know he was available to us. He lives just up the road.

In addition to driving and hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway, we enjoyed numerous other activities in the Asheville area. We suggest Blue Heron Whitewater for rafting/kayaking on the French Broad River. DuPont State Forest is beautiful, with several waterfalls and hike and bike trails. Bring your swimsuit! The North Carolina Arboretum and Biltmore Estate are must-sees.

We also enjoyed the Asheville Pinball Museum, the River Arts District, and the whole of downtown.

Food: 12 Bones, Curate, Asheville Pizza and Brewing Co., Tupelo Honey Cafe, French Broad Chocolate Lounge, Chocolate Fetish, and Ultimate Ice Cream.

When we come back to Asheville, we would definitely choose this cottage again. Highly recommended.

Nice and Not So Nice

  • 3 out of 5
There were some nice things about this home. It was very clean and had beautiful flooring and ceilings. The high ceiling made it seem very spacious. The master bedroom suite was large and inviting. Very nice bathrooms. It had a washer and dryer downstairs. The house was very close to shopping and restaurants and about 15 minutes to downtown Asheville. It was nice sitting on the deck with your morning coffee or having a glass of wine while overlooking the mountains towards evening.
Some of the not-so-nice was that the last 1/2 mile to the place was on a narrow, rutted, gravelly road where you had to pull over if another vehicle came your way. We had to walk our dog on this rutted road, because we couldn't let him run in the yard because he would get into the shrubs, bushes, etc. and bring home ticks. Although he was protected I still had to pull a number of ticks off him. The closets in the loft had no place to hang clothes so I had to lay them on the beds. The TV had a very limited amount of channels, and although that's why you're not there it would have been nice in the evening to have a larger selection of viewing possibilities. I was looking forward to resting in a hammock as seen in the photos, but only the stand was there with no hammock. Also, in the photos is a firepit, but you need to pay extra to have a fire and also get permission. Finally, we never heard from the owner until we got back home. He had sent me an email (we never saw the owner) asking us to let him know when we would vacate the place because he had other people coming in that day. I found that odd, because he only lived a couple of houses down the rutted road. I don't check my emails on vacation.

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing a review and sorry that you found some of the things not to your liking.
Just wanted you to know the hammock was in the laundry room.
Also to clear things up about having a fire, I ask for permission as a safety factor and I only charge guests a fee if they want me to cut them some wood.

Magnifiicent Mountain Views

  • 5 out of 5
We just enjoyed a wonderful four day stay in your beautiful mountain getaway home. Everything we needed was provided down to toiletries, paper products and even an Ingles card! I woke up early each morning to watch the mountain view change-it was mesmerizing. The location can't be beat. It is close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and minutes away from everything else. We were very active during the day but made sure we were home by the end of the day to sit on the deck with our dog and watch the firefly show and enjoy the cool weather. We plan to visit the area again and will definitely stay in this perfect cabin.
