Nice place... but a sting in the tail!

  • 1 out of 5
Greenport is a charming small town on Long Island, well located for travel from NYC and onwards to Connecticut.

The property was nice - clean and comfortable and with the amenities as described.
The manager, Pam, was very pleasant to deal with and called to the house to resolve a problem that was being encountered with the wireless internet, which was not working too well. Pam was a pleasure to deal with and was very professional.

A downside to the property is that it is located very close to a train track and station and at night-time trains return to the station and remain running. This noise was quite loud and disturbed our sleep as it went on late into the night.

Another (personal) downside was that the bed in the property had a memory foam mattress. This might be to others taste, but we did not like it, finding it uncomfortable when turning in your sleep and hot (as is the nature of memory foam mattresses). That said, others may like this, it was a personal dislike.

Would you come back again or recommend this home to a friend?

No. While the property was nice, dealing with the owner (not manager) was unpleasant. As part of the rental agreement, there was a requirement for travellers to pay the owners credit card charges on the rental. I didn't pay too much attention to this at the time of signing the rental agreement but it added an additional $47 to our charges on checkout.

I questioned the charge (I did not have the hard-copy rental agreement to hand) in a pleasant manner with the manager but was greeted by a very negative and caustic response by the owner, who accused my husband and I of trying to swindle her, also stating the fact that she had worked in a law practice for many years. This was very nasty and entirely unnecessary. I apologised for my mistaken question and accepted the charges (as I had agreed to them as part of the rental agreement).

Overall, the nasty and unnecessary correspondence from the owner soured our visit and has ensured that we would never rent this property again, nor recommend it to anyone.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, although I hope all guests are happy with their stay on departure, I can’t please everyone all the time.
I have never had a guest complain of any noise. In fact, the house is situated in a very quiet residential area of the village. The train station is located right next to the Ferry Station several blocks away which is an advantage for visitors who don’t drive. The train usually arrives in Greenport at 12:12 pm, 6:45 pm and 8:17 pm Mondays to Fridays except holidays. And yes, you can hear the distant sound of the train whistle as it pulls in, but then again, that is part of the charm of being on the tip of Long Island!
I have received many compliments on how comfortable the mattress is, and although I hope it suits all guests, I realise that there may be some who are used to a different type of bed. I regret that Mr and Mrs Donnelley were uncomfortable, however I try to suit everyone’s needs. She should have mentioned this to Pam at the beginning of her stay rather than writing a negative review after her departure, as we could have taken off the second mattress and she could have tried out the one below.
The rental agreement, which all guests must approve online before reserving, plainly states on the first page that credit card fees would be deducted. We willingly take other forms of payment and all guests are given a choice. I try to make it easy and understandable with prices and charges on the front page. And I always send a copy to the guest. It was unfair of her credit card company to charge extra fees for converting from one currency to another, but I couldn’t prevent this.
And her claim that I accused her of swindling is silly and incorrect, when in fact after I received several emails where she got her payment amounts to us mixed up with another rental she had stayed at, she strongly insisted several times that we had charged her for “undue” costs.
Thank goodness she complimented Pam, who is a gem.

What a FANTASTIC Get-Away!!!!!!!

  • 5 out of 5
We came in town for a week-end wedding at a local winery and stayed and extra day. What a charm!!! Both Victoria (owner) and Pam (agent) were great to work with, had wonderful recommendations and made our stay tremendous. A king-size single bedroom, with a fully equipped kitchen, WI-FI and TV, living room and den made for a comfy stay. A quiet beach less than 2 minutes walk away and a five minute walk to town made having a car un-necessary. The Long Island Railway Station was less than a 1-minute walk away. We will absolutely come back to Greenport and VRBO #318061!!!!!

Review #9165460 “Charming, Cozy and Close to Everything!”
We felt like we were staying in a relative's beach house. So many homey touches in every room. Pam went the extra mile in answering all our questions before we arrived. She met us promptly to show us the ins and outs of the apartment upon our arrival. We were also fortunate to meet Victoria, who owns the house, but lives in Italy. She is very gracious!

We were in Greenport for a wedding and the location was around the corner from where everyone else was staying. We felt very fortunate to be so close to the town, but not directly in it. Very peaceful! A beach is just a short walk down the street and like a little secret getaway. We peacefully watched a schooner sail by and then about 2 dozen little sail boats in a race.

We can't wait to have another opportunity to go back. If possible - early this fall. We went to Greenport/North Fork for a wonderful wedding at a Vineyard, but we can't wait to explore more of the area. Our time was too short to shop & explore - but we did find some great restaurants, had one wine tour which included sitting and listening to live music playing some of our favorites - James Taylor, Jethro Tull, etc. We also found a wonderful beach - rivaling any we have seen. Sorry - not giving up that location in this review! We recommend the apartment and the area highly!

FANTASTIC property, FANTASTIC location!

  • 5 out of 5
Absolutely LOVED our recent stay at this warm, welcoming home in Greenport! The peaceful private setting is simply the most perfect location - 10 minute walk to the heart of Greenport village; 5 minute walk to the beach; 5 minute walk to the ferry to Shelter Island and transportation to NYC. Victoria could not have been more welcoming or accommodating. The house is furnished beautifully and the kitchen is stocked with all those things you normally have to run out and buy (like olive oil or foil or ….) - beautifully thought through as far as what comforts a guest could want. We spent 10 days of pure bliss in this adorable house - HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

charming accommodations!

We had a wonderful stay at this charming house. Plenty of space to accommodate four adults. Beautiful outdoor space and patio, shops and restaurants are just a short walk away. I wish we'd had more than two days, will absolutely stay here if we return to Greenport.
