I have visited Ireland many times since 1980, our first trips we toured all around the island. Then my husband and I started staying in cottages in the West Cork area. When you rent via internet you have to trust that the property will be as pictured. The Jewel Box exceeds its description because you can not put in words the feeling derived from its views and the peace sitting in the sunroom watching and hearing the waves on the beach. I used the binoculars to watch the shorebirds and keep tabs on a very large heron that fished along the stream in the field by the beach.
I didn't do as much driving this visit because I found great walking and gorgeous scenery right outside the door of the cottage or close by in Bantry and Durrus areas. It was convenient to be close to Bantry. I could buy a pizza at the Brick Oven (the best) and have it back to the cottage while it still was hot. Lots of good restaurants within a short drive. There are recommendations in the Welcome Book which are spot on.
I did visit a couple holy wells because I enjoy the historical and mystical aspects of Ireland. One well west of Macroom and another just down the road. Crookhaven, Mizen Head, and Barley Cove beach are close and worth the trip, especially O'Sullivans at Crookhaven.
The cottage is well maintained and has the comforts of easy living. I enjoyed the woodstove on cool days and the sunroom could be as warm as Florida. Tim and Eliza were helpful in getting me settled and staying in touch.
I hope to return and bring a family member along. I certainly would recommend the cottage to friends and family. I am fortunate to have found this treasure and appreciate the owner's responsiveness to inquiries. One more thing most important to me since I traveled alone is that I felt very safe in this area of Ireland and the cottage in particular.

Definitely a Jewel!

The listing for this house could not be more accurate...it far exceeded our expectations! The house is terrific...cozy, clean, completely equipped...as my 8 year old daughter said "totally exquisite...". The beach at the bottom of the hill is fantastic, beautiful views from every window, all the comforts of home and then some. The tranquility of the place is truly exceptional. Dan has thought of everything...from the "how to" book on the coffee table, to suggestions for everything that are right on, to having 2 wonderful hosts, Eliza and Tim to greet you upon arrival. We couldn't have asked for a better place to be....already planning our return!

The house is on the outskirts of Bantry but close to everything. We prefered the Beara peninsula over the Ring of Kerry....much less traveled and there's the prize of a beautiful beach at the end of the peninsula. The markets in every village are worth visiting...so much fun and such a variety!

In sum, the house, countryside, ocean, and people of this region are truly amazing!

Great Location!

What a great vacation rental. Very modern and clean cottage with water views from every room. Isolated yet easy access to restaurants in Bantry. We really enjoyed the hikes to Sheep's Head and Mizen Head. Also, not to be missed is Killarney National Park, especially if you don't have the time to travel the whole Ring of Kerry. We did have Internet and it was very valuable to help us plan our outings for the next day.

Heaven on Earth!

My family and I just returned from a fabulous time on the southern coast of Ireland. We spent a week in this home on Bantry Bay. The pictures give an accurate look at what to expect. However, they definitely do not do it justice on just how beautiful the vistas are!! You are literally a short walk to your own private beach to enjoy and the views are unbelievable. The location is away from it all, but just a 5 minute drive from town. This was the perfect location for us. Perfect for day trips fishing in Courtmacsherry, kayaking in Skibeereen, hiking Sheep's Head Way, exploring Mizen Head and Barleycove Beach, driving through the Killarney National Park and kissing the Blarney Stone! All were around an hour drive if not less.
I would highly recommend arriving on Thursday evening if possible to take advantage of the fresh offerings of the Bantry market day on Friday. Great local vegetables & baked goods to take back to the house to cook up! But, don't get too caught up in cooking at the house as there are so many great places to eat out in Bantry as well!
The house is very comfortable and a great place to unpack and settle in for a while as you get to know the southern coast of Ireland! The newly added on master bedroom/bathroom on the first floor is a great haven away from the kids with unbelievable views of the beach. Then there are two bedrooms upstairs perfect for the kids.
Tim & Eliza, the caretakers, are so very welcoming and were a real treat. They were more than happy to address any of our needs, though really everything we needed was already there! Dan, the owner, was a pleasure to work with as well. After the stresses of planning a 2 week vacation with an opinionated husband and two teenagers to satisfy he truly made the Ireland housing portion stress-free! He has tons of recommendations and information about the area to help you plan your days as well.
Dan was diligently working to get internet at the house, but really it's so much better to just disconnect. When you need an internet fix there is a small internet cafe open until 6:00 PM in town and Julie's Diner (not suggested for eating) but open until midnight with free wifi.
I would highly recommend this home away from home to anyone! We really did not want to leave!!

A Diamond on Bantry Bay

  • 5 out of 5
We have been to Ireland three times in the past 5 years and have stayed at a wide variety of lodging from castles to guest houses to B&Bs. All were wonderful but this was the best for us. Quite frankly the pictures are unable to show the beauty of this property and the views. The view from the house is breathtaking and the sunsets were spectacular. House was clean and well maintained. The caretaker ; Timmy was truly an Irish gentleman and he and his wife were most hospitable. Location was perfect. Despite the privacy there are incredible views, hiking, adventures, sight seeing and dining all within minutes. Owner was extemely helpful and easy to work with and we are grateful to him and his family for opening up their home. We had an unbelievable week of peace and beauty. I would recommend this property without reservation. Some things we did just minutes from the house were drives out to Sheeps Head, Mizen Head and spent a day touring the Ring of Beara. Glengarriff also has some nice trails and parks right in the heart of downtown. Had great food at every meal. Drove over to Kenmare and had a 5 star meal at Packies. Really outstanding experience. Favorites in Bantry were the Fish Kitchen, Wharton's Fish and Chips(eat in or take out) and Snugs Bar.

Gorgeous location, lovely home - will definitely be back

  • 5 out of 5
My husband and I and our 1 year old daughter just spent a week at Shavalla Beg as the house is called and it completely blew us away. From the minute we arrived we felt at peace - there are beautiful green and ocean views from every room, birds in the air and cows on the hill. Fuchsia blooms along the road. And the house itself is great, quite large with wood floors and furniture, warm and clean. The new bedroom is huge with lovely skylights and nice beds, the living room has comfy chairs for reading, a big table for family meals and huge windows for just enjoying the ever changing views. The kitchen has everything essential though is small. Tim the caretaker will ensure that everything is just right for you, and is a kind and personable guy. It felt like someone's really well kept home not a rental. One day we did walk into Bantry (about 45 min) which is a pretty walk and a bustling town (check out the Friday market), but generally we explored the region by car. The beach is literally a 5 minute walk from the front driveway, perfect place for skipping rocks and climbing on the cliffs. Would love to return as a larger family or with friends to make use of the other 2 bedrooms and eat big family meals overlooking the sea. If you are planning to be out exploring every day from dawn to dusk, it's a very nice place to stay but to really get the most out of the property plan to spend at least some daytime there, just chilling. Definitely be aware that it is quite rural and away from it all - which is just what we wanted. Also beware that the nearby Sheep'shead trail to Lady's Well starts off as a gravel road but becomes a hard to follow cow path, quite an adventure, especially with a stroller! Truly cannot recommend highly enough if you are looking for a comfortable but rural experience in West Cork. We feel so lucky to have stumbled onto this house and this part of Ireland, will definitely want to return.
