John, grew up in Central New York, attended University of Rochester and Cornell, graduated as a Veterinarian, interned in St Thomas and sailed over to Long Bay Beach Resort to tend to the animals of the resort owners at that time. Over the past 35 years while owning and practicing veterinary medicine in another beautiful area, Lake Placid, New York, we would travel to Tortola to visit his veterinary mentor and the Long Bay Beach owners who encouraged us to have a villa built. In 2002 Wellsprings Villa 31 was completed. It is truly another beautiful area in the world.
Marie Cogar purchased this villa in 2002
This property offers privacy and community at the same time. We can join others for tennis, social gatherings, and a meal, or to be alone we quietly lounge on the beach, our deck, or going for a snorkel or sail.
Often coming from professional, busy lives, we need a place that allows us to immediately relax and leave behind work and responsibilities. Wellsprings Villa 31 provides us with this type of vacation. We also have come to enjoy the kind, trusting, spiritual local people.
One of our favorite times is watching the sunset over Jost Van Dyke from our Penthouse deck. As the darkness approaches, we see the string of pearl-like lights on this island.
Rented just the penthouse with my wife and our 6 month old baby. It was lovely. As the other reviewers state, the pictures are an accurate depiction of the villa itself, and unless you have 'out of your mind' expectations, you'll be more than satisfied. We saw the Garden apartment too and it looked very nice. It would be the perfect spot for two small families traveling together (split the cost ;-). As far as the surrounding area/things to do:
I surfed a great deal as we happened to get a week of really good waves. You can easily walk to Apple Bay in ten minutes or less (over a steep hill, all hills in Tortola are steep!); but even better, there is a wave right out front in Long bay if the swell is big enough. So this is a perfect spot to base an 'upscale' surf trip .
We did not rent a jeep, though I would recommend that if you are averse to walking up and down the hill to the Villa. It is UP THERE, but we managed with a baby and all the bags you need for a day at the beach (we discovered a path of stairs on our next to last day which helped, but we were already fit by then!!). Of course, the plus side of the elevation is the amazing view; which has also been well documented by other reviewers.
We ate most of our meals at Long Bay, and the restaurant there is adequate (not amazing, but it's good enough and it fills you up for the next adventure). You can also walk to Smugglers Cove (via a neat dirt road through a jungle) in about twenty minutes for snorkeling/calm water swimming.
The last thing I will note (and it was something I was looking for but couldn't find easily before our trip) is in regards to swimming in Long Bay and the rocky bottom. Yes, most of the bottom in Long Bay is Rocky/Reef; right in front of the hotel/restaurant included. But if you walk West on the beach, you'll get to Nature Boy's shack, and the bottom is 100% sand here for a large area. I have surfed in many places around the globe, and the ocean water color and clarity here is probably the most beautiful I have seen anywhere. Just beware of rip tides if the surf is big. There are no lifeguards.
It's not the most budget place (but not much in the BVI's is), but you are certainly getting a lot more for your money at Wellsprings; so I would highly recommend it and hope to return many times.
This villa was great!! We stayed in the penthouse and we were pleased!! The view was amazing and the villa was clean and comfortable. The ocean breezes were consistent and use of the pool, beach chairs and restaurants at Long Bay Beach were great. We rented a jeep (highly recommend) due to the the mountainous terrain. There are so many beautiful beaches, you would be amiss to not go and explore each and every one of them. JC and Sam were amazing at helping us with all our needs and suggesting places to go and eat. They were both attentive to our needs and were always just a phone call away. We can not wait to return!!
We have stayed on Tortola many times and especially enjoy Long Bay. This Villa was spotlessly clean and comfortable and matched the photos exactly. The local managers were most helpful. It is relatively high on the hillside and therefore the views are exceptional and the breezes very comfortable. We did not need to use AC during our stay. The pool is closed but the beach is very nice and just a short hike down the hill from the unit.
Loved our 6 days at the Wellsprings Villa 31. There were my wife and I. The place is in great condition, has a kitchen stocked with all cooking and serving amenities and even a cell phone to use while you are on the island with plenty of air time for local calls. The location is, in our opinion, the best place on the island. The grounds are all well kept and what remains of the beach club is also wonderful. You walk down the paved hill or take stairs to get to the beach club and beach. 5 min. This place is a no-brainer to stay at. Best beach, modern, clean, well stocked. Wifi is sketchy on most of the island. It was available enough of the time down at the beach club to suit our needs. Sam takes great care to ensure you are well taken care of.
Wellspring was beautiful. The villa is perfectly located on one of the nicest beaches in Tortola with perfect views of the sea. The villa is spacious and comfortable with lovely terraces to enjoy a meal and listen to the surf. We stayed here with another couple, and the layout worked very well. If you are looking for a relaxing getaway, this is a great spot.
My wife and I stayed here the February 2014. Our first trip to Tortola, BVI.
Location: After exploring most of the island I'd have to say staying on Long Bay Beach and in this villa is your best bet. The beach is gorgeous (pictures don't do it justice) and has beach chairs (free), restrooms, and a restaurant. You also have Smugglers Cove beach right next door. Together, in our opinion, the 2 nicest beaches on the island. Also the north shore is by far the nicer side of the island. In fact, most of the south side doesn't really have beaches and includes the city-like town of Road Town which we didn't find all that picturesque. Also, the West End is the best end of the island. You are close to the nicest beaches and just a short ride to Soper's Hole - a great little place with marina (sailing excursions), pastel colored shops, grocery store, and a large outdoor restaurant with great atmosphere and reasonably good food. So our advice if traveling to Tortola would be stay on the north side of the island, down at the west end, and in this unit on Long Bay.
The Villa: We stayed in the Penthouse unit. The views are best here and I have to emphasize, they are commanding/stunning/incredible. The villa was nice, up-to-date, clean, and had everything we needed. The only thing you might give up over the larger villa downstairs is having an oven but we weren't doing any baking. :-) It was an easy 3 minute walk to the beach and there is parking for your rental car. I have to say one more time about the views from the Penthouse unit - there were times when we couldn't decide whether we wanted to just sit out on the deck and enjoy the views (which we did with our coffee every morning) or lay on the beach and for us that is saying something.
Once last thing. We are particular about where we stay when we travel and we would definitely stay here if we returned. A no brainer.
