At 4,400 feet, the undiscovered gem called PIPES CANYON VALLEY, just a stone's throw from historic PIONEERTOWN, is a refuge of serenity nestled at the foothills of the BIG BEAR MOUNTAINS adjoining 33,000 acres of WILDLANDS CONSERVANCY. Our gorgeous solar and wind-powered Southwest casita, graced by fine art within, is situated on 22 acres of nature's own artistry without.
HIGH DESERT EDEN surrounded by a spectacular panorama of rare flat-topped mesas, jagged peaks, a volcano, and giant boulders, delights the senses with breathtaking sunrises and sunsets, and the Milky Way on display virtually every night. We're a short drive from JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK and the BIG MORONGO CANYON PRESERVE, a world-famous birders haven. We enjoy four seasons here, each with its own distinct pleasures; spring with its unmatched wildflower bloom; summer (20 degrees cooler than Palm Springs, 10 degrees cooler than Joshua Tree) with maximum greenery and balmy, star-filled nights; autumn's crisp days and changing colors; and snow for a fantasy winter holiday.
Here you can create the vacation of your dreams - a solitary respite to write or reflect in perfect peace and quiet; a romantic lovers getaway; or a rejuvenating PRIVATE YOGA RETREAT customized to your personal needs with renowned yoga master MAX THOMAS.
Enjoy a sitting meditation in our tee-pee or walk our desert vista labyrinth. Have a telescope delivered to your door for optimal stargazing, or play a game of bocce ball on our new bowling court. Kids (and adults) love 'mining for stardust' in our Rockhound Wash. There's a great library of fiction, nature, human anatomy, off-grid and healthy living books and magazines, as well as eclectic spiritual, philosophy and yoga titles for times you want to lie on a comfy couch or under a shady tree and just READ.
Besides the huge bedroom (queen memory foam mattress) there are two comfy single beds in the livingroom. But best of all is a FABULOUS SCREENED 220 sq.ft. LIVING and SLEEPING PORCH (queen bed) with perfect privacy and million dollar views.
For the more adventurous, take advantage of back roads the likes of which you've never seen, groves of the planet's largest Joshua trees, secret gardens, hidden caves and ancient petroglyphs. With its unmatched biodiversity of plant and animal life (a result of the area straddling the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts), Pipes Canyon Valley is an untrammeled national treasure, one that rivals the grandeur of Joshua Tree National Park itself. Or just for fun, drive a few minutes down the road to wild and wooly, world-famous music magnet and restaurant, PAPPY AND HARRIET'S PIONEERTOWN PALACE.

An Eco-Friendly Destination
'We'd always dreamed of owning property adjoining public lands and to live a sustainable life. The magnificent WILDLANDS CONSERVANCY on two sides of High Desert Eden is that dream come true, and we're proud to be off the electrical grid, with a photo-voltaic array mounted on a state-of-the-art 'tracker,' augmented by a wind generator. While we have all the modern amenities here, we've learned to be conscious about consumption and live lightly on the land. We ask all our guests to do the same.' Max is available for discussion and consultation about our system.
PRIVATE YOGA RETREATS: If you make yoga a part of your HIGH DESERT EDEN getaway, you will enjoy the most delightful, tailor-made experience of your life. With 35 years of yogic wisdom at his command, MAX THOMAS offers his own eclectic and non-dogmatic style of yoga to everyone from raw beginners to seasoned practitioners. You can choose gentle, restorative session to promote healing from injuries or illness; basic to more complex breath work; or learn how to use 'Yoga as Preventive Medicine.' Yoginis and yogis might wish to kick-start their days with energetic classes, to refine or re-design their current practice...or even create one from the ground up. And there is no one better than Max at just 'playing yoga,' with kids from 9 - 90. LODGING AT THE CASITA, YOGA CLASSES and HEALTHY GOURMET MEALS included.
Our return visit to this wonderful 20+ acre property. Like the first time, we hiked all over, enjoying the vistas and the spring wildflowers. But we also just kicked back with a glass of wine in the sunroom/sleeping porch and watched the parade of wildlife not ten feet from our seats. If you enjoy watching cottontails, jackrabbits, quail and other animals we highly recommend this property.
We had an amazing time in pioneertown at robin and max's place. Their home is off the beaten path so it is great for a getaway from the city life. Their property is amazing! So many fun spots to explore. They are on acres of land that you can hike, relax on- they have a hammock, tons of rock gardens, a fire pit! They also have a screened in porch that has a bed so you can sleep outside but still be protected. We saw so many jack rabbits and birds every morning! They also had everything you need in their place including coffee and they brought us bread! Definitely recommend 100%!
We will definitely return! The screened-in porch was amazing - it allowed us to wake up to the chirping of the birds in the morning and go to sleep feeling like we were camping out. The scenery around the casita was wonderful -flat top mesas, big boulders to climb, gullies to explore... The owners took care to have all the right touches like a fresh load of bread, wood already in the firepit and a variety of books to read. We wish we could have stayed longer. Next time we hope to take a yoga class from Max.
High Desert Eden was the last stop on a round-the-world trip with my two boys, and what a superb end to the holiday. Definitely the highlight of the trip. Despite (or maybe, because of) the snow and freezing January temperatures, the casita was a cosy place to recover from jet-lag, the skies were crisp and clear, and Max and Robin are such attentive, delightful and charming hosts. And what an unbelieveable natural setting, with a feeling of remoteness despite the relative proximity to LA. Good food and entertainment up the road at the inimitable Pappy and Harriet's. Magnificent night skies with the distant howl of Coyotes. And Internet if you really need it! Truly magical.
Getting away 'on retreat' couldn't possibly get better than this - except maybe to stay longer! As individuals and as a couple we relished the joy of being in this desert Eden for three days. Robin and Max are gracious and generous hosts; they have built and lovingly maintain a nurturing oasis of peace for us pamper-seeking humans as well as a home for a fabulous biodiversity of birds, animals, plants, and rocks. They offer here what we all need most - the rest and renewal that comes from slowing down and paying attention to the elemental essence of life itself - inside and out. We could hardly drag ourselves away to go out and get groceries (except for a crazy night of fun music and dancing at Harriet and Pappy's!) The silence of the desert, the stillness of the stars, the expansive vistas we could walk in, the wild-eared jack-rabbits - all of this - remains a joy-filled presence as we shovel snow, slip on ice, and face the realities of this NE winter.
Waking up to cottontail rabbits outside our bedroom window. Following fresh tracks to the nearby wash for a gorgeous sunrise heralded by coyote howls. Back at the comfortable casita eating breakfast with a primeval view while a covey of quail wander by outside. Midday hike along a ridge of low hills for long views with hardly any signs of civilization--without leaving the 22 acre property. A short ride down the road to Pappy & Harriets for dinner followed by stargazing on a moonless night snugly covered by warm comforters on convenient chaises. Hiking the next day in the 27,000 acre Pioneertown Mountains Preserve which borders the property. Max and Robin have done wonderful things with the casita and the surrounding desert property to satisfy every whim for relaxation, exploring, solitude and bird/animal watching.
