I am an European Journalist who has been covering Hollywood for over 30 years. My life and privilege has been to interview and learn from every major Hollywood talent: their dreams, ups and downs, successes and failures... I have been visited by Catherine Zeta-Jones to Arnold Schwarzenegger to Will Ferrell just to name a few. The property has been used for fashion shots and as a movie location. For me Los Angeles means sunshine, blue wide-open sky, diversity of people, natural wonders, individuality, unimaginable cuisine and 'The sky's the limit' attitude. What I love about my property is the location: far away and yet so close to the hustle and bustle of Hollywood... from here you can quickly be anywhere the action is in minutes...or just enjoying a serene day on top of the world.
Frances purchased this house in 1975
As soon as I came to Los Angeles my dream was to live on Mulholland Drive, which is for me as historic as a cathedral would be in a town in Europe. MULHOLLAND DRIVE is a painting by David Hockney. KING OF THE MOUNTAIN was a fictional movie with Dennis Hopper, Harry Hamlin and Dan Haggerty loosely based on actual Mulholland Drive racers. The films MULHOLLAND DRIVE and MULHOLLAND FALLS were named after the road. Video games GRAND THEFT AUTO and MIDNIGHT CLUB features Mulholland Drive. R.E.M.'s song ELECTROLITE was inspired by Mulholland Drive and is mentioned. TOM PETTY refers to 'glide down over Mulholland' in the hit song 'FREE FALLIN'. In LOVE AND BASKETBALL Mulholland Drive is referred to during the scene in which Q and Monica meet up outside of her bedroom after the Spring Dance. It marks the street as a dead end where couples go for privacy.
My friend & I opted to rent this home rather than two hotel rooms, and it served our needs well. The two bedrooms located on opposite ends of the home gave us our privacy when we needed it, and I loved the small, private garden area right outside my bedroom. The house was located in a very safe neighborhood, allowing me to take walks in the morning for some beautiful sunrise shots of LA. You will need a car to get around, but it was conveniently located close to the Hollywood Bowl, Griffith Park, and other attractions. The room was clean and bright, and the shower was huge! Also, my mattress and pillows in the smaller bedroom were probably the most comfortable ones I had ever slept on in either a rental home or a hotel. That was much appreciated. DVD collection was enormous, although we did not really have time to view any of them.
I appreciated the quick replies I always received from Frances whenever I had a question, also, and how promptly my security deposit was refunded. One slight caution - the parking space works best with a smaller car. Lovely home, photos accurately depict it. Would recommend this for two singles needing two beds, or two couples. And would definitely stay there again if the need arises. Thank you, Frances.
The positive reviews are all 100% true. This apartment has everything you need for a very comfortable stay and the location is wonderful. We had breakfast at home everyday and then set off to see all that LA has to offer. We did laundry, watched TV and relaxed outside on the terrace. Frances was incredibly gracious and accessible at all times. The apartment itself was very comfortable for my family (four adults and a small child) and it was a lot of fun to stay up in the canyon. The views are beautiful and the apartment offers a quiet retreat from the rest of busy LA. I can't recommend it more highly!!!
We booked a last minute business trip to Los Angeles which included our 21 months old daughter. We stay at many VRBO locations around the country and have a very high standard. Since we travel with our daughter (she has been on 56 flights!) we are always looking for accommodations for a small family. We are so delighted that Francis had a last minute opening for us. Her property was perfect for our 5-day business trip. A few of the highlights of the home....the property is tucked up in the Hollywood Hills. We flew in to Bob Hope Airport in Burbank and only took 20 min commute time from the airport. The home was very easy to find the parking is on the driveway not on the street- a plus! The house is totally private with a secure locked gate with a gate code. We felt very safe and often had all of the doors and windows open....December in Los Angeles! The grounds were immaculate and the private courtyard and backyard garden were very well suited for our daughter for playing and exploring. Because the property is totally gated and secure, we always knew she was safe to explore and play. The home was immaculate, very tidy with up to date bathroom. The bedroom had a small desk, a plus since we need a work space when traveling. The kitchen was well suited for cooking and although we didn't cook any big meals, the kitchen was just fine for simple breakfast and lunch. We had many meals out in Hollywood and Beverly Hills, great restaurants! One of our highlights of the trip was the hike at Runyon Canyon which was less than 5 min drive from the house. The home is comfortable, has wifi and cable tv, so you can still be plugged in while feeling very out of the fray and activity of Hollywood and Los Angeles. Mobile phones work great on the property, no issues at all with connectivity. Frances is a wonderful hostess. We will be sure to return and have already shared our experience with our friends and family.
We have been to Los Angeles many times, but this was our first time renting a vacation home. We didn't get disappointed, this house is beautiful and it looks exactly like on the pictures. We immediately felt comfortable and welcome. The view over the city is stunning, and you really can see the Hollywood Sign from the driveway. The library of DVD's and books is impressively large. This home is ideal for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, but close enough to get to all the interesting places in a few minutes. It is so quiet there and the beds are really comfy, we had the best sleep of our entire vacation. Frances is a great and friendly host, we got to meet her once and had a nice talk. She respects your privacy, but is always on hand when needed. We will definitely stay here again!
What a fabulous location! We could see the Hollywood sign from the driveway, and could hike Runyon canyon right down the road. The furnishings are delightful; bright, colorful, and clean. The house had all the cooking equipment we needed, in addition to helpful pluses like spices and vinegars and coffee filters. And if you like movies, there's a stunning library of DVDs. Hollywood Blvd. and Sunset Blvd. are minutes away, and Griffith Park is a great place to spend a day. We really enjoyed hiking the Betty B. Dearing Trail, which we started in Wilacre Park in Studio City. If you like good beer and good food, check out Blue Palms Brewhouse on Hollywood Blvd. Park at a meter, and check out the wild boar sausage.
This property is heaven-on-earth and I feel so unbelievably blessed to have stayed here for a week! It was the perfect fit for what me and my two children (ages 13 and 15) were looking for in a Hollywood vacation spot. With only a mile or so to go before arriving at our rental home, I was momentarily worried that it would be too close to the hustle and bustle of Hollywood Boulevard. Yet, as soon as I hooked a quick left onto Outpost Drive and started weaving my way through the mansions lining this snaking mountain passageway, I knew that I had nothing to fear. “I feel like a movie star,” said my typically unimpressed daughter as we passed gated estates and pulled out onto Mullholland Drive. The fully-equipped kitchen (stove, refrigerator, oven, toaster, dishwasher, etc.) boasts all the appliances and utensils necessary to prepare a Thanksgiving feast! My daughter loved her bedroom, which, in addition to having a DVD player and big-screen TV, afforded her the opportunity to walk out her own personal sliding glass door and enjoy views of beautiful Runyon Canyon. The master bedroom is equally impressive with its two full-sized closets, sliding glass doors, and spacious king sized bed. I awoke every day and immediately walked out onto the private patio to take in the morning sunshine. Bathrooms are often a make-it-or-break-it situation for me when it comes to renting vacation homes. This property, thankfully, offers a recently remodeled bathroom (full spacious shower, plenty of counter space, wrap-around mirrors) that is actually bigger and nicer than either of my two bathrooms at home! Clearly, I could go on and on about the countless perks that this rental property has to offer (e.g., linens, washer and dryer, inside and outside dining tables, wifi) but what I appreciated most about this home was its location. It’s literally a convenient mile or two from touristy downtown Hollywood. Yet, despite its proximity, this home is protected from that commotion by the beautiful Hollywood Hills. Drive down LaBrea Avenue and you are quickly in Beverly Hills. Continue a little further and you will arrive at Santa Monica Pier/Beach, a pleasant jaunt we made several times during our week in the Los Angeles area. Frances is such a nice woman and she gave us the privacy we wanted but was only a quick phone call or email away if we needed anything. Needless to say, we would rent this home again in a heartbeat and we truly hope to do so again soon.
