About Glen

We are a family with 4 boys living the American dream and very thankful for our good fortune to have this Resort in NM, The Land of Enchantment! We live in Northern VA and fell in love with the peaceful isolation of the NM desert in an area they call the bootheel of NM. The picture is from our own family reunion. The heated pool was a favorite hangout for everybody, especially the kids!

Glen purchased this estate in 2009

Why Glen chose Rodeo

John McAfee put this property up for auction in the crash of 2009 with the auction was featured in an article in the NY Times where we read about the property. We decided to attend the auction and were absolutely blown away by the peacefulness of the area and the quality of the layout and construction of this estate. Believing it would make a great getaway resort we placed the winning bid for this former private estate and turned it into The Painted Pony Resort.

What makes this estate unique

The Pained Pony Resort is a great choice for the budget conscious who want the Southwest Desert experience but not the commercialism and or prices of Tucson and Phoenix. Weddings can be done economically using locals for food and other services. For family reunions, it is a great place because everyone tends to stay on the resort and re-connect. We love PPR for its beautiful setting and the calm and peaceful spirit it promotes. This is a perfect place to get away from the rat race and get spiritually recharged. Small to medium sized groups, artists, astronomers and university staff on sabbatical have come to hold their meetings at PPR. They find that our facilities are economical and their members love the quite beauty. Several groups are returning each year at the requests of their members.

Worth every penny!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of 20 that was attending a large airsoft military simulation game in Playas NM. This was within an hour drive and had the room we needed for this large group. Super clean and spacious!!! The grounds keeper was extremely friendly and helpful. All i can say is.... give it a try and you won't be disappointed.

Awesome Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

The PPR was the perfect place for a Retreat. The house provided great sleeping accommodations, nice open kitchen, large dining table, and comfortable living room. There are beautiful vistas in every direction and a very spacious courtyard for sun and fire. Bruce, the caretaker, was wonderful - ready to help with any need.

Wild Rumpus Wedding

  • 5 of 5

For our wedding we had some specifics we were looking for in a place; one that allowed camping, didn’t have restrictive quiet hours and a place that would allow dogs on the premises. When we first got engaged we visited the PPR and instantly loved it and Bruce the caretaker. When we finally decided to have it locally and not closer to family for our ease, Glen the owner was very easy to work with and was always available when we had questions or if we wanted to visit the site to get ideas and take measurements.

Bruce takes amazing care of the property and you can tell that Glen and Bruce have great respect for each other and property. It was great to learn of the innovative restorations projects Bruce does on the property and hear about support he gets from Glen to try new things. One of the coolest factors of the PPR is the type of cliental that comes to stay. We are active in the local conservation circles and it’s great to hear about all the biologists, astronomers, archeologists and entomologists that come stay and do research on the property. It’s one of the many reasons why we felt a connection to this place.

We rented the PPR for four nights over a long weekend. Bruce was very helpful and has a great wedding resource page on the website. We had a mix of family and friends stay in the buildings, rented out the event center down the road, and let anyone else who felt like camping pitch a tent. If folks were looking for their own places to stay, there are plenty of website resources and Bruce was always helpful for folks finding other places.

Our wedding was basically a 4 day extravaganza of games, pool time, potlucks, and socializing. We had an afternoon wedding in the courtyard, did the reception in the hanger and had a themed dance party in the latter part of the evening till the early hours of the morning. We rarely left the property but we encouraged folks to visit the local area and some of those trips were to visit Cave Creek, Portal, Bisbee, and the Chiricahua Natural History Museum. A fair warning, all your guests will love Bruce… definitely one of the more popular people at the wedding. Everyone was interested in his knowledge of the local area.

All in all, we love PPR, and I think we sold friends and family for group holidays or other group gatherings. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a fun place to hang out.

Incredible place for astronomy

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of Canadian amateur astronomers and we just spent two weeks in this incredible place. The property is extremely nice and well appointed. We were 13 people and the resort never felt crowded. For astronomy, the area around the hangar was ideal to setup our astrophotography equipment and also our two big 20-inch Dobs. There is even a nice bathroom at the back of the hangar so it was easy to remain outside all night without bothering our non-astronomer wives and friends sleeping in the main complex ! We were lucky and had 10 clear nights in a row. We chose the month of October for our visit to avoid the monsoon season that ends in late September. On most nights, winds were light and except for a couple dusty days towards the end of our stay, weather was perfect.

There are nice side-trips that can be easily done within the area: Chiricahua museum is a must, and astronomers should visit Rancho Hidalgo and see a restoration of Clyde Tombaugh personal telescope. We also liked the town of Bisbee, and the breathtaking Portal/Cave Creek Canyon area.

On-site manager Bruce is a very good man and such a nice guy. He was of great help and his knowledge helped us getting a better understanding of the desert. He also helped organizing a perfect cowboy cookout. We really appreciated his unobtrusive presence and kindness.

Dealing with the owner was always easy and straightforward. Glen answered all of my emails in no-time at all ! It was a pleasure doing business with him. No hidden costs or bad surprises.

Well, we had a GREAT time and I would highly recommend this place to anyone with a taste for an unusual and peaceful vacation. I sure would like to have a chance to visit again not too far in the future.

Magical Wedding Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We chose The Painted Pony for a small wedding of 20 people and we couldn't have picked a better place. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Bruce (manager of the property), who let us know that he would be nearby to tend to our every need during our stay. He also assured us not to worry about anything on the day of our departure and that there was no need to tidy up the place before we left. The presence of Bruce, making sure all the guest are happy and satisfied, is truly what earns the term "resort".

Our main goal for our wedding, was to have a relaxed event and to allow our families (most of whom had never met each other) to spend some quality time together. The pool table, ping pong table, pool, hot tub, and basketball court, gave people opportunities to bond, while relaxing and having fun. Also, Bruce was kind enough to take some of our guest on a hike in the mountains nearby. He was very knowledgable about the history of the area and the various plant and animal life.

We should also mention that all of the buildings on the property are impeccable. The accommodations made our guests' eyes pop when they first arrived. The humongous bathroom in the wedding bungalow is the perfect space for a bride to get ready for the ceremony. The beds are very comfortable and there were plenty of comfy chairs on the patio to allow everyone to enjoy time outside.

If you are going to have any event that involves doing your own food preparation, the Painted Pony has plenty of amenties to make this possible, including 2 full sized kitchens, a commercial freezer, ice machine, multiple refrigerators, and plenty of plates and utensils.

When I remember our wedding weekend at the Painted Pony, I actually get choked up, because our experience there was so euphoric and carefree. Everyone had an enchanting weekend where they could let go of their everyday stresses and appreciate everyone around them.

We are planning on returning to the Painted Pony on our 5th wedding anniversary and are hoping for a longer stay on our next visit.

A Special Place

  • 5 of 5

Planes, trains and automobiles...no matter how you get to the Painted Pony Resort you will not regret your decision to go there. We were there to attend a family wedding and it was the perfect place for the 21 of us us to gather and spend some time together. The property is expansive so when you need some time to yourself you can simply walk the estate, tuck yourself into a corner at the pool or find a quiet room in one of the three houses on the property. Active time...let Bruce take you on a quided hike, share some local color or set you up with a telescope to view the night skies. The place is immaculate and extremely well cared for. No matter the reason that brings you to the Painted Pony - you will quickly realize that you found a slice of paradise.

Painted Pony Resort is situated in the heart of the San Simon Valley near Rodeo, NM. Rodeo, NM is nestled in between the Chiricahua and the Pelencillo mountains and has been a boom town more than once thanks to cattle, minerals, and the railroads. The San Simon Valley and Rodeo, NM offer the perfect Southwest desert vacation spot.

The weather has four gentle seasons and the area experiences over 300 sunny days per year. The region is rich in history from the early inhabitants around 1000AD called the Mimbre Indians to the travels of Coronado expeditions 500 years later on the way to the Colorado to the wild west cowboys of the late 1800's including the Earps, Curly Bill Brocious, Billy the kid, and the Clanton Gang.

The Chiricahua Mountains are considered a hikers and birders paradise and offers an amazingly diverse range of micro-climates from the desert at the valley floor to an alpine climate as you climb through the range. The lower elevation Peloncillo Mountains are home to a plethora of desert wildlife and foliage and have some spectacular areas to hike and explore.

In the town of Rodeo, NM you'll find a few nicely appointed B&B's, a general store, and the Rodeo Tavern where you can get a cowboy-size meal and a great steak.

Being primarily a ranching area the locals are hard working and family oriented. They welcome newcomers and are always happy to see a new face. Don't be surprised if you get invited to a roping or out to gather cattle if you express even the slightest interest.

The amateur astronomy community is strong with many astronomers residing in nearby Portal, AZ at the Arizona Sky Village. You'll find people in the area who are extremely eager to share their passion for astronomy with you.

The basin and range province of southern Arizona and New Mexico is characterized by a series of north south mountain ranges which rise in sharp relief to the broad flat valleys between them making the area an excellent place to hike. With the Chiricahua mountains to the west and the Peloncillo Mountains to the east hiking is popular past time for both local residents and visitors.

A family oriented activity, horseback ridding can add something special to a family reunion and we can put you in touch with local guides.

Backyard astronomy is a favorite with our guests because of the low atmospheric interference and our location remote from the light pollution around towns and cities. For this reason, the night sky is outstanding and we are the perfect location to view the sky. Join other amateur astronomers around the world to behold the beauty of the heavens.

Favorite observing targets are the Moon, Planets, open clusters, and multiple stars.

If you are an amateur astronomer it would be best to bring your own equipment. However, we do have a basic telescope you are welcome to use.

The Chiricahua Desert Museum in Rodeo, NM (5 miles from the resort) is owned and operated by Bob Ashley and is NM's premier rattlesnake educational outreach and exhibit. The Ashley conducts educational field trips for Family Reunion's and have a wonderful art gallery, animal display and gift shop.

The Boot Hill of New Mexico is famous for ancient Indian archeology. If you want to dig in the dirt, find things that are lost, put together pieces of the past, figure out stories from clues, and learn about the past, then we can point you in the right direction. You will find artifacts on our 300+ acres as well as other sites within driving distance to investigate. We can also put you in touch with locals who will be happy to show you around.

The Sky Islands of the basin and range region of the southwest are exceptional sites for bird watching or observing general wildlife. The north south orientation of these mountain ranges provide migratory corridors between Central and North America at elevations up to 10,000 ft. In addition to endemic species found year round, migrations of a number or sub tropical rare species move through the area at different times of the year. 375 avian species have been identified in and around the Chiricahua Mountains and many local naturalists maintain feeding stations to attract local birds. A number of commercial operations offer birding tours as well as local naturalists, or you can strike out on your own into the Coronado National Forest, with a stop by the American Museum of Natural History Southwest Research Station to update your species checklist of the Chiricahua Mountains or New Mexico.

There are many exciting and rewarding day trips you can plan while staying at PPR.

We are located about 75 minutes North of the historic mining towns of Bisbee and Tombstone, AZ. On your way down stop at the Geronimo Roadside Monument and drop by Douglas, AZ and have lunch at the famous Gadsden Hotel.

We are 90 minutes South of the beautiful Gila Wilderness & Cliff Dwellings. You should also visit the Spectacular Chiricahua National Monument.
