Great place to stay in CR

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here over the Christmas holiday for 8 or nine days. The home is just as described -- bedrooms and baths very comfortable and well furnished. The kitchen, while modest, has everything needed for an extended stay. The real highlight, however, is the wonderful garden and pool area. Really spectacular and relaxing. Mike, the owner, made every effort to make our stay as promised. As others have written, he comes by each day to clean the pool and tend to the garden. Not intrusive at all and he is ready to answer any questions or give you guidance about the area. We highly recommend this home if you plan to visit Playa Grande.

A few words about the area are warranted. This home is located in a small enclave of a few dozen homes or so -- many of which are very elaborate and over-the-top impressive. Its a very comfortable place to spend time and an easy walk to an amazing beach. A few restaurants, bars, and a market within easy walking distance. Otherwise to get to grocery store and other more populated areas its a bit of a hike, but that is really the charm of the place and certainly an aspect we enjoyed. We are thinking about going back for the rainy season.

Perfect Costa Rican experience with the best pool!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Mike's beautiful home in Costa Rica for five nights and loved it! The house itself is beautiful with a gorgeous garden that makes it very private from the road, which is only used by other residents of the neighborhood, so it is very quiet. The pool is as perfect as it appears in the pictures, especially because Mike came by at 6am every morning to clean it of the debris from all of the beautiful trees that surround it. We saw more wildlife from the pool than anywhere else in Costa Rica! It was like being in a sanctuary. It is a very short walk to the beach where we jogged every morning and went for sunset every night. We even saw a family of monkeys traveling through the trees at the entrance to the beach one day. We hardly saw anyone on the beach in the mornings, and were among a few surfers in the afternoons. We went to a few of the local restaurants for dinner a couple of nights - Seven (has a fun bar with live music and the local grocery store, Wilmart - the owner is one of the nicest people!), Hotel Bula Bula for drinks, and another Italian restaurant that is right down the street. We also grilled a couple of nights - got some amazing Nicaraguan steaks at Wilmart (the market next to Seven) and grilled them on the charcoal grill that was provided.

We went to Rincon de la Vieja one day, which was a great hike where we got to see some monkeys and other wildlife. It took about 2 hours each way to get there. Unfortunately the volcano was too active to allow us to hike to the top, which would have made the 4 hours of driving a lot more worthwhile, but it was still a very fun day since we enjoy hiking. If you go to Rincon, you must hike to the blue waterfall, which looks like something out of a movie.

We took surf lessons one day from the surf camp that is just down the road past the entrance to the beach (5 minute walk - you can't miss it). The surf instructor was great and getting signed up and ready to go couldn't have been easier.

Costa Rica has a lot of theft and we were a bit concerned before we arrived, but Mike has a safe, locks for all of the doors and windows, and he cleans the house himself so that only he has the key. The neighborhood also has security which goes around at night to keep an eye on things.

Overall the stay was perfect and I couldn't have asked for anything else! It was difficult to leave our little paradise and I hope to go back someday!

Fantastic stay!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 stayed in early October for 4 nights. Mike is a wonderful owner and very helpful. Unfortunately we had an unusual amount of rain but we still enjoyed our stay. Both bathrooms are nice, the king size beds are comfortable and the pool is fantastic, especially after spending time at the beach. Mike cleans it very early every morning but we never heard him. The laundry was a must for us and was convenient. The kitchen is small and basic but it was all we needed on vacation. The covered patio was our favorite place to hang out (though the mosquito population was healthy with all the rain). We especially liked the flora and fauna here. We would definitely recommend a stay here.

First time in Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

This was my husband and my first trip to Costa Rica and this is the 1st house while we were there. It was wonderfully relaxing. We always book through VRBO for our stays where ever we travel and have never been disappointed. The owner was very helpful with information. We stayed in October, the rainy season, and it only rained on us in the evening, which was so nice to hear, along with the birds and howler monkeys. The pool was cleaned every day and I took advantage of that....and, the beach close to the house. I would definitely stay here on our next stay. Thank you for the goodies you left us to enjoy!

Relaxing, Peaceful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I went back down to visit one of our favorite countries, Costa Rica for a quick get away and birthday celebration. We have visited several times before staying in some of the many nice resorts, this time we wanted we wanted something different and away from all the other tourists....what a pleasant surprise! The house was everything as advertised, but even more charming in person. The layout, amenities, appliances, and AC were all in tip top shape. The pool was used everyday in the afternoons after getting back from morning activities. It was also in great shape, partly to do with Mike usually coming over in the early mornings ( between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. ) to clean the pool and outdoor facilities.

Mike is a really nice person and will help you with guides to near by restaurants and surrounding activities. He is very knowledgeable and knows the area very well. The beach is awesome , but is primarily used for surfing and the leatherback turtles nesting grounds. It is not a very friendly swimming beach, but that is made up for by the serenity and beauty of the beach. I will just guess that from the estuary ( National Las Baulas Marine Park ) to the other end of the beach is probably 1 mile in length. The majority of the days we only saw a handful of people walking and collecting sea shells.

The flora and fauna surrounding the residence is wonderful, with plenty of birds, squirrels, land crabs, etc frequenting the property. There was even a small troop of howler monkeys in the near by trees.

The drive from the airport is not bad with really good paved roads, except for the last 2 KM which is a very bumpy dirt road. That is really the only thing I can say negative.

We had a wonderful time and would gladly recommend this place to our friends.

Pura Vida
