About Eamon

Eileen and I live in Ireland, north of Dublin. As we are in our mid sixties, with our family grown-up and semi retired we lead a less stressful life and enjoy hill walking and travel. We visit Villefranche three to four times a year thanks to Ryan Air!!! We have always loved holidaying in France, having taken many 'gite' holidays with the children. We love their food, their life style, the brightness / light of the South of France and particularly the friendliness of the Nicoise.

Eamon purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Eamon chose Villefranche-sur-Mer

In 2005 we were fortunate in buying 'Eclat de Couleur'. We chose this apartment because of its wonderful Sea View Terrace and its location being close to restaurants, shops and bus stops in the Old Town of Villefranche on the Cote d'Azur. It is bright and airy. The terrace is a wonderful sun trap with the enchanting colours of the Bay, the Terracotta of the Old Town roofs against the pine forests of the Cap Ferrat. It has an excellent location being a five minute walk to the shops, restaurants and bus stop and ten minutes to the sandy beach. A bus every fifteen minutes to Nice or Monaco at 1€ per trip gives you excellent opportunities for day trips.

What makes this apartment unique

The central location of this apartment allows us to holiday without a car, choosing instead public transport for day trips along the coast or inland exploring the valleys of Maritime Provence. Buses are cheap, clean and frequent.

The apartment is a great base for day-trips. Popular trips are Monaco, Nice for shopping, art galleries, Promenade des Anglais, the Old Town and Flower Market. Further afield there is St Paul de Vence for art, Cannes and its Croisette, Ventimiglia (Italy) for its market

A walk to Villa & Jardins Ephrussi de Rothschild for its villa, formal gardens and fountains, not forgetting a coffee and a choice of the best gateaux on the Cote d'Azur is always worthwhile.

Being avid hill walkers we love to head off on the bus up to the hills behind Nice, La Turbie or Menton.

On Summer evenings another favourite is to grab the swimming gear, pick up a bottle of wine and a pizza and head for the beach and enjoy the setting sun over Mont Albion and the waves lapping the sea shore.

During the Winter season we have enjoyed classical concerts and an opera from the varied programs in Nice, Monaco and Cannes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved our stay at Éclat de Couleur. It is perfectly located to explore this area of the French Riviera and the hinterland villages, being close to both bus and train public transport options, and yet very quiet and peaceful compared to busy Nice. We found living at the top of the charming old town of Villefranche absolutely delightful - walking out daily to pick up baguettes and bakery treats, as well as frequenting a few of the charming restaurants. The apartment had a breathtaking outlook over Cap de Ferat and the old town, and was very well stocked with all the essentials we could need. Eamon was very accommodating when we needed it, and punctual in responding to our enquiries. We tried the recommended Oliviera restaurant in Nice and fell in love with it, and the very passionate owners. Highly recommended! We also visited the villages of St Paul de Vence and Eze... both were charmingly beautiful and quiet in the ' off season'. Finally we enjoyed many walks - including to Villa Rothschild, and following the stunning pathway around Cap de Ferat. We would not hesitate in staying here again, and indeed hope that one day we will be able to return! Mette and Brad ( and our 3 teenagers), Perth, Western Australia

Wonderful views of Cap Ferat and the Bay from the terrace

  • 5 of 5

My wife, daughter, son-in-law and 7 year old grandson stayed for 7 nights in this 2 bedroom apartment in mid March 2015. The well equipped apartment is ideally located on the edge of the Old Town of Villefranche with wonderful views from the large terrace of Cap Ferat and the Bay. Highly recommended as a relaxing base to explore the Cote d'Azur. Bus stop and train station are close by. A walk path along the Villefranche beach front connects to path walks along the coast of nearby Cap Ferat.

Myself and a colleague spent time in the apartment after a gruelling weeklong conference close by.

We couldn't have hoped for a more relaxing base from which to explore the village of Villefranche and surrounds. The most difficult part of the entire stay was tearing ourselves away from that balcony with the breathtaking views.

Within walking distance a fabulous bakery, gorgeous local shops and the seafront with all it's bars and restaurants (perfect for early morning coffees to watch the fishermen set off).

Busses pass a mere two minutes from the property and take you in all directions with impressive regularity.

The apartment is cosy and pristine.

The property manager patient and welcoming.

We simply can't recommend the apparent highly enough as the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing trip in a picturesque village or from which to explore the Cote d'Azur.

The perfect apartment for enjoying the Cote d' Azur

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I spent 8 nights in this great apartment. The view from the spacious terrace is spectacular. The location is perfect. Close to everything: Train station, beach, bus stop and a fabulous Patisserie that is less than a 5 minute walk away. The property manager, Sue, was very helpful upon our arrival with mapping out locations for restaurants, markets and things to do. We will definitely be back!

Éclat De Couleur is a true burst of sunshine

  • 5 of 5

I was fortunate to stay here for 4 weeks, a little unsure of what to anticipate. Fear not! This is a real gem. Location location. Could not be better. Just outside Nice which is easily accessible via no. 100 and 81 buses. They run frequently and the stop at Barmassa is three minutes walk. The ride is a set rate of €1.50 and high praise for the fact that they can actually provide change. If you choose to travel east on the bus, great delights await in the form of Èze, Monaco and Menton. An alternative to this excellent form of transport is the train from the little station of Villefranche. This will take approximately 10 minutes to walk and don't forget over 60's get senior reduction. We went to the market on Friday in Ventimigloa across the border in Italy. Another trip by train was to Grasse, perfume centre of the world. So much to see and so many wonderful walks with views that are beyond spectacular.

As for the apartment, éclat de couleur aptly describes the light most days when I opened the bedroom door. It is magnificent as is the view from the lovely balcony. February was a little cool to sit outside for long periods, but when I could enjoy a glass of wine or morning coffee there, I relished it. I was fortunate to meet Eamon and Eileen and they were most considerate and concerned that I should be comfortable. No worries there. 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms, the latter not always so easy to find. The space is well designed to live comfortably. I chose not to spend much time in the kitchen as the selection of restaurants is excellent with a range of prices. Desserts are to be picked up in the boulangerie. Out of this world. I highly recommend Éclat De Couleur. It was home for a month and I loved it.

What a great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Villefranche and this apartment - we loved it so much the first time, we had to return. The apartment is close to everything - beaches, shops, markets, the bus and the train. However, what we really enjoyed was opening the sliding door all the way, sipping wine out on the balcony and looking at the view after walking, hiking, etc. There are a lot of restaurants to try or you can eat in - the kitchen is well equipped. Sue was great and made sure we had everything we needed. We highly recommend this apartment!

Villefranche is unique as a village on the French Riviera in that it has not been over-run by apartment development and commercial tourism. Remarkably, it is still an authentic French and Nicoise fishing village of 7,000 residents. Although it is in the heart of the Riviera, with Monaco on one side and Nice on the other, it is still a little village where the same families have lived for centuries and people know each other - it is a little enclave.

The site of what is now Villefranche, Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat has been settled since prehistoric times. Celto-ligurian tribes roamed the area and established farming communities on the surrounding hills. The Greeks and later the Romans used the natural harbour as a stop-over en route to the Greek settlements around the Western Mediterranean. It is a strategically important area where the Alps join the Mediterranean separating France from southern Europe.

Located on the exclusive Cote d'Azur, Villefranche-sur-Mer is ideally located 10 minutes east of Nice, 10 minutes from Monaco / Monte-Carlo and 30 minutes from Nice-Cote d'Azur Airport. It is served by the Nice / Menton bus which runs every 15 minutes and the Cote d’Azur rail line. It enjoys a wonderful sandy, south-facing beach and is noted for the number and quality of its restaurants. Villefranche Bay is popular for scuba diving and snorkelling and other water sports. There are many scenic walks for all levels of walkers. Popular day trips include Monaco for its Casino and Grand Prix, Nice for the Old Town, Promenade des Anglais, shopping and art galleries, Cannes for the glitz, Paul de Vence for art, Ventimiglia for its market, and the old hill-top village of Eze. Centrally located, the apartment is 5 minutes from restaurants, cafes, shops including bakeries, supermarkets, greengrocers, pharmacies, ATM, bus-stop, two car parks and 10 minutes to the beach, train station or l'Institute de Francais

The coastal walk around Cap Ferrat is a must as is a visit to Villa Rothschild and Gardens. The hill walks take you into the foothills of the Alp Maratime affording magnificent views of the coast line from Menton to Cannes.

For families there is a very popular water and theme park in Antibes. White water rafting is available in the Roya and Var Valleys.

Nice, Monaco and Cannes host many musical festivals including Nice Carnaval every February, the Nice Jazz Festival in July, ballet, opera and classical concerts during the winter months and of course the F1 Monaco Grand Prix on the last week-end in May. Golf is available at La Turbie, 10 miles by car.
