Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday apartment in Cruz Bay - Bluebitch St. John

1 bedrooom, 1 full bathroom, outdoor shower, sleeps 2

'Bluebitch St. John' will make you feel at home during your stay on our lovely island. We are located on the west side of the St. John, at Estate Contant, with breathtaking views and incredible sunsets. Only a minute walk to your own secluded beach. Minutes from Cruz Bay, at the end of a private family estate road, 'Bluebitch St. John', built in 2005, provides a quiet, tranquil setting for a romantic and relaxing holiday. The walls are constructed of 12 inch thick bluebitch, which is native stone of volcanic origin and quarried on St. John. The ceilings are 10 feet high with ceiling fans throughout, modern appliances including a washer and dryer, an air conditioned bedroom, five large screened doors provide open air living with gentle sea breezes and outstanding views 24/7.

Rooms With A View ... is 'Bluebitch St. John'.: Whether you are sitting on the patio, cooking in the kitchen, eating breakfast, sitting on the couch reading, checking e-mails, texting or waking up in the morning ... each room has an outstanding and entertaining ocean view. There is WiFi access, cable TV, an AM/FM stereo and i-pad docking station. The bedroom has a king size bed and opens onto the balcony so you can take advantage of the lovely ocean views with cool breezes as you listen to the sounds of the ocean or you can sleep in the comfort of air conditioning.

During the day you will see a variety of boats of all sizes and the barges passing by, in the early evening there are the incredible “Kodak Moment' sunsets and at night you will be able to enjoy cruise ships headed down island, the twinkling lights of St. Thomas or just gaze at the moon and the stars.

You will find: bananaquits, hummingbirds (aka Dr. Birds), pelicans, mourning doves and an occasional crane - all very entertaining to watch. If you have good eyes you just might see our resident turtle coming up for air in the bay, fish jumping or schools of fish running just off shore. In season you are welcome to pick limes, mangos, bananas, papayas, soursop, or sugar apples on your way back from our secluded sand/pebble beach. Whether you are swimming, snorkeling, diving for lobster or simply sitting on a rock fishing for snapper, it all takes place right in front of your balcony.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Bluebitch is beautiful!! And part of the beauty stems from the amount of love that has been put into the craftmanship of this villa. Private beach has been the pre-bedtime stop every night.

Ten days is not enough.

I was half-tempted to title this review "Whatever you do, DON'T go to Bluebitch!" in a selfish effort to keep it more to myself!

My wife and I traveled to Bluebitch St. John for our honeymoon (she found it here on homeaway.com). The reviews were all very positive, the price was right, and the villa was available at the right time - the Universe was, I think, telling us to go to Bluebitch. The Universe has good taste.

This review is posted in list form, in terms of what is "easy" to do and "hard" to do, at the Bluebitch Villa in particular and on St. John in general.

At BB, it is

EASY to feel at home. The villa is clean and bright, large and comfortable, and full of things that make it feel like a home. The kitchen has full-size appliances; the main living area has room to stretch out; the bedroom is large and has furniture and closets (so you don't live out of a suitcase).

HARD to remember that it's not actually your house. While Ann and Albion live upstairs, it's not as if you are bumping into them all the time (although if you need something, it's easy to just shout!) The villa is very secluded and private, the grounds are lush and green, and the layout of the area is such that you will not see locals or guests from other lodgings. You really feel like you have your own private slice of paradise.

EASY to spend the whole day at the Villa. Stock the fridge with goodies, brew some coffee or blend up some frozen drinks, and spend the day snorkeling at the private beach or reading on the balcony.

HARD to keep track of the day and time. I suggest losing yourself in the rhythm of the waves.

In St. John, it is

EASY to get lost on your first day; the roads are somewhat haphazardly laid out, and of course it's your first day. So set aside a couple of hours and go exploring.

HARD to get lost on your second day; the island isn't that big

EASY to spend a fortune on food and drink; this is an island in the middle of the ocean and it's tough to get all the creature comforts there, so you pay for it

HARD not to take advantage of happy hour to find ways to live on the cheap

Thus I am hesitant to post this review, for fear that Bluebitch St John will be booked for years on end and I won't be able to go back! We can't thank Ann and Albion enough for their hospitality. Our honeymoon was worth every penny.

A Dream Come True

  • 5 of 5

This was our fifth stay at the Bluebitch and our most wonderful.

Ann & Albion are a large part of the attraction of the BB. They give you a feeling of warmth and a welcomeness of like being part of their family. Our plane was over four hours late and they said they knew that and had been tracking our flight. You don't get that level of concern at a big hotel chain.

We called them from Red Hook to tell them we would be late and would be arriving after our car rental place had closed and would be taking a taxi to the BB. They said "No way, we will pick you up at the ferry dock." Albion was there with a big smile and took us right over to the BB. At the BB Ann welcomed us with big hugs. Then Albion said "Take 'our' car and use it to pick up some food items and then use it to go out to dinner." The next morning Ann was right there to drive us to our car rental place. How could anyone be any nicer. They do treat you like family, maybe even better.

The Bluebitch was better than ever. Clean as a whistle, beautifully decorated with fresh flowers everywhere, new rugs, new bedspread and they are constantly improving it in little ways that could go unnoticed and in big ways also, like the major improvements to entrance road. It is so much smoother.

The view from the veranda during the day is like watching a TV show. Sailboats, power boats, dinghies, tour boats and ferry boats going by like a parade. At night the flickering lights of St. Thomas are just so mesmerizing. I don't want to leave out that the BB is the only place I have ever seen a hummingbird.

When you stay at a Hampton Inn you never say "Thank you for letting me stay here." but at the BB you do, because you feel like you are staying with old friends who have opened their home up to you.

Again, Ann & Albion thank you for letting us stay at the Bluebitch and can't wait to see you next year.

All our love, AL & Debby

Amazing property and Amazing hosts!

Bluebitch is a stunning property inside and out. The photos are 100% accurate & still do not portray how wonderful everything is in person. There is no detail Ann & Albion have not attended to. Their love of Bluebitch is obvious.

Ann and Albion were wonderfully attentive and responsive, yet not all at obtrusive, as some owners on the premises might be. They are upstairs, and hardly ever seen, unless you want to see them, and then they are just a call away. The availibilty of an SUV to rent directly from them, is a huge convenience and perk. As it their pick up service at the ferry, complete with stop at the island grocery and spirits stores. Ann and Albion put their energies into making and maintaining a beautiful property, instead of the ironclad, no risk to owners, contract transaction that many owners seem to focus on instead. Given that Bluebitch is rented YEARS (literally - all high season spots for 2015 are already taken) in advance, this pays off and guests really want to return.

I rent 2-3 homeaway/vrbo properties every year, and usually are generally happy with them. However Ann and Albion are truly exceptional. I work 60-80 hours a week and the constant back and forth of contracts and reminder emails usually has me going a bit crazy and setting my teeth on edge before I ever get to most of the properties I stay at for the first time. Even properties where I have paid in full upfront to specifically avoid this, have not been as easy to work with as Ann and Albion were on finalizing details and just showing up. For busy professionals not having time or energy to deal with that stuff, I would recommend Bluebitch in a heat beat. You will not be disappointed.

About the only negative item - and not really negative - it is islands after all & should be expected - was the heat and bugs in high season. I had only been to the islands in low season previously, and thought the difference would be greater. There was not though, at least the week I was there. The trade winds I thought would be more apparent in high season weren't all that cooling or noticeable even w/ everyrthing open (and it was better for screens to be down in helping to keep bugs at bay). But the AC unit cooled the bedroom very well. The fans were very easy to move around in rest of the villa, to help stay cool wherever you were, while still having a great island open air feel.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! St John is stunning and Bluebitch is top notch.

Wonderful! Life in paradise

  • 5 of 5

Bluebitch was lovely! The gardens, the stonework, the open doorways, it's just a beautiful place to call home for a couple days! Ann & Albion make sure you have everything you need and keep the place top notch. The little private beach is great! I just wish we had more time to use it. It's such a beautiful home, really a piece of artwork that Albion has built there. Plus, with their history of the island, whatever you need to know they can help you out!

We explored the island with our favorite hike being out to Ram's Head just past Salt Pond Bay and don't miss Drunk Bay while you are out there with all of the cute stick, coral and coconut figurines people put together. It was a beautiful bay and hike and we only saw one other couple on the two hours we spent just enjoying the area!

It is a drive into the place, but once you get there it is heavenly. We did run the trail into and back from town, it's about a mile, just really watch your step. But, you really have to rent a car to get around and enjoy the island (and they have one right there!). They are so professional but at the same time so friendly that you feel like you are returning even when it's just your first trip there.

The Reef Bay Hike was neat with the National Park Service as you take the boat back right past Bluebitch. One night while we there, we were able to listen to Albion play his music while he was on a boat going past the place. Definitely want to go back and just spend more time enjoying the many beaches and relaxing.

Only Gets Better & Better

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth stay at the Bluebitch and it truly has the feeling of returning home each time. Ann & Albion are always there to greet like old friends and family.

When you think the Bluebitch is about as perfect as it can be, Ann & Albion make improvements in just about all areas, the driveway is smoother, the close line area seeded with soft grass, new dresser in the bedroom, new screens on the doors now keep out all insects, new seating area with table, chairs and patio umbrella and the park like grounds are always changing for the better. When you think it doesn't get any better, they make it better.

The sights from the balcony at night of St. Thomas are truly mesmerizing with all the dazzling lights. One night St. Thomas lost its' electricity for an hour and that still will be a memory we will never forget.

Sometimes when we are driving around St. John, we will see other places where people can stay and we say to each other " No, we would not trade it for the Bluebitch." How many places can offer the size, the cleanliness, the beauty of the stone work, the view, your own private beach and the love that Ann & Albion have put into ever aspect of the Bluebitch.

Can't wait till our return to our home away from home.

Al & Debby
