Pilrig House - The Park Apartment (Sleeps 3 max) - A Home With History

Our exceptional 4-star graded, 2-bedroomed Park Apartment is within Pilrig House, an A-listed, 17th-century Scottish townhouse (built in 1638), which has a distinguished history and a wonderful literary connection - it was the home of Robert Louis Stevenson's mother's family - as a child, RLS often visited and played in the gardens here as a child - he mentions Pilrig House in his novels: Kidnapped and Catriona.
Unique Park Location
The apartment is sited in a tranquil park, yet, incredibly, it is only a 15-20 minute stroll (just over a mile), or 5 minutes by bus (bus stop is only minutes away from the apartment) to Edinburgh's city centre and all the main attractions. Enjoy the private garden, which offers secluded seating areas and is teeming with wildlife.

Guests have exclusive use of the house’s sweeping Palladian staircase entrance, at the top of which are double oak doors and a small seating area, a south-facing suntrap overlooking the park - wonderful for sipping a glass of wine and watching the world drift by at the end of busy days' sightseeing! Or, dine in all seasons with the doors flung open and drink in the changing weather and landscape...
The interior is extremely comfortable and has a beautiful mix of antique and modern furnishings, comprising: living-room with oak flooring & Persian rug, real-flame effect fire, designated dining area, two leather sofas, coffee-table, bookcases full of books and DVDs, and recessed window seat with delightful views of the park; 2 bedrooms - 1 single, 1 double (fully carpeted and equipped with hairdryers) with wonderfully comfortable beds and luxury mattress toppers, fitted wardrobes, chest of drawers and dressing-table, bedside cabinets/lamps, alarm clock, adjustable heaters, US adapter plug) - both bedrooms have park views; a fully-equipped kitchen (see amenities); and, a luxurious, fully-tiled bathroom with deep curved bath, toilet, wash-hand basin, shower screen and glass shower over the bath, full-length heated towel rail and shaver point.
Rare for city center rentals, Pilrig House offers the bonus of a FREE allocated parking space in a safe private car park to the rear of the house.

Open all year. The apartment is non-smoking, but you are welcome to smoke outside, and, sorry, no pets.
For bookings of 7 nights or less, we ask for payment on booking. For bookings exceeding 7 nights, we ask for 50% payment on booking, and 50% 8 weeks before your stay. On completing a Booking Form via our website, we send you a Booking Confirmation, followed by a secure online payment request via CardSave (you can pay by credit or debit card).
We ask all prospective guests to complete a Booking Form via our own website, and that they read our Conditions of Rental page before doing so. The cancellation policy is clearly stated on that page.
Please view our highly competitive nightly & reduced rates on our owner's website (we feel it is disingenuous to show 'per person per night' rates that do not convey the true min. price of a stay). And, there are absolutely no extra add-on taxes or 'hidden' charges.
Discounts (on nightly rates) for longer stays:
2 weeks - 15%
3 weeks - 20%
4 weeks or more - 25% (we are flexible and may offer a greater discount if in low season - do ask!)
We also offer all solo travellers a 10% discount on our nightly rates!
If the Park Apartment is booked, please DO look at our other two apartments, there may be availability, and if only 1 or 2 people staying, we can offer a discounted rate for our Balfour Apartment!

About Debbie or Philip Martin
Philip is a retired mechanical engineer, who travelled the world as a naval engineer for many years - living in Mexico and Belize for several years. He is an amateur historian, and has amazing local and Scottish historical knowledge... and, is also a keen 'treasure hunter' - goes off frequently to local sites with his metal detector.
I am an ex-copy editor who worked for over 20 years in the field of publishing, and then on a freelance basis as an editor/proofreader. We both enjoy travel, books, films and, life in general.
We decided, after meeting, that we couldn't bear to sell Philip's apartment in Pilrig House - it was just so special, and so we decided to turn it into a rental apartment. A year later, with great joy, we moved back into the house ourselves, then we purchased another apartment for renovation & rental, and so it just grew over the years since we started up.
We have made many great friends, and still gain enormous joy & satisfaction in welcoming visitors here from around the world. It is lovely that so many visitors, including increasing numbers of solo women travellers, come back time & time again.
Our emphasis, right from the start, was to create incredibly clean & exceptionally comfortable accommodation, with in excess of the usual facilities found in vacation rentals – and to maintain this high standard. We also wanted to ensure we met our guests’ needs, and so listened & took on board, almost without exception, all comments/suggestions over the years. We always personally offer a warm welcome, & are really pleased to be able to provide further support during your stay, if wanted! On arrival, we take you into the apartment, showing you all the need-to-know things, and will always take as long as you want to answer all your questions – it is nice to meet the owner and to know we are on-hand should you need us.

Why Debbie or Philip Martin chose Leith
Well - there's the fact the Pilrig House is utterly unique as an historic 17th-century townhouse in Edinburgh, then there's the lovely location, and the parkland and Edinburgh skyline views... And the peace! Then, there's the wonderful ambience in the house itself - it really is special. And, the private parking, the beautiful gardens... there is so much to enjoy about living here. We just couldn't replicate what Pilrig House offers if we searched the length and breadth of Edinburgh. And the fact that we can walk into the centre of Edinburgh in 15-20 mins, or take a bus right outside the park... more than anything, we love the feeling of living in the country while living in the city.
In each apartment, the living-rooms and bedrooms have park and/or garden views – a lovely change from looking out onto city streets or other buildings! The house’s history also gives it a special feel – some people liken it to staying in a Scottish castle…
Robert Louis Stevenson’s mother lived in Pilrig House and he visited here and played in the gardens as a child – we include his novels in all three apartments, so you can read extracts that refer to Pilrig House, and imagine living in another time…
One national newspaper journalist wrote, after staying here, that the house has a ‘timelessness that made for instant relaxation…'
And, the centre of Edinburgh is under a mile away – most guests walk there, and sometimes take a bus home at the end of the day… and describe their pleasure at returning to the peace and tranquillity of Pilrig House. Great shops are almost on your doorstep – supermarkets, cafes, bars, restaurants… all within easy walking distance.
We have many US and Canadian guests who come back every year, and European guests who visit at least 6 times per year – and they have stayed previously in the best hotels and now choose to stay here. Location. Location. Location. We awaken to birdsong, can gaze out our windows & see the park in all seasons & ever-changing colours, or sit in the garden to the side of the house in total privacy & enjoy the tranquillity.
Great Local Amenities & Attractions
Everything we need is close-by: great local independent shops, supermarkets, bus stops, restaurants (especially in the nearby waterfront 'Shore' area), Playhouse theatre, Martin Wishart's Cook School, gym & leisure centre (with fab pool), multi-screen cinema, library, bank, post office, a fab Sicilian bakery, great Italian deli and cafe - Valvona & Crolla, walks/cycle-path along the Water of Leith walkways, Edinburgh's Waverley train station - to list a few of the local amenities...
The nearby East Lothian coastal trail - only a half-hour drive away, has a host of charming villages and historic castles.
22 wonderful golf-courses along the above coastline - eg Gullane, North Berwick, Craigielaw, Muirfield, Archerfield, Dunbar - for golf fans out there! Or drive to nearby St Andrews Old Course & get snapped on the bridge...
Another great bonus is our free parking in a private car park directly to the rear of the property – you can bring your golf clubs! - this is incredibly rare in Edinburgh – most properties have ‘metered’ on-street parking on a street outside/near their property, which never guarantees a space, and is incredibly expensive – you have to top up the metre every couple of hours!
Philip and I often walk to the ‘Shore’ area of Leith, on the waterfront – which is Edinburgh’s port – a 5-10 minute walk from Pilrig House – it has great restaurants and bistros. You can also use your membership card to visit the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s ‘The Vaults’ premises here – even if you don’t like whisky – a great place to have a bar lunch in the oldest building in Leith (at local bar-lunch prices).
