Our family's moved to Alaska in the early 70's. We moved here for the Alaskan Experience. During our pursuit of that experience the family became involved in staking out Alaskan Open-Entry land and taking advantage of public land auctions. The land this cabin sets on was purchased at auction. Our family grew up on this property and the 5 acres next door. Our children were raised here on weekends and summers at the cabin. We have built and re-built generator systems and installed off-grid electrical systems that now allow the cabins to be enjoyed year round. We have fished the lake extensively in winter and summer... we really know where to catch the Pike that dominate Amber Lake. We've explored the surrounding area in summer and winter for the past 20 years and can tell you where to go for a great experience all year round. We even found the submerged island in the middle of the lake. Let us show you where it is the next time you come to Amber Cove Cabin.
Tom Hardwick purchased this house in 2009
My mother purchased this property at a Alaska State Land Auction, site unseen in 1973 when Amber Lake was a fly-in only lake property. Ten years later the road was pushed back to Amber Lake. We then made our first ATV adventure to Amber Lake. This property took our breath away and soon we began building our first cabin. After almost 15 years of week-ends and summers at the cabin and 100's of repeat guests we have just finished our second cabin on the adjacent lot. We are very proud of our NEW cabin, because it boasts all the things we did correctly when building and furnishing the first cabin. We think Amber Cove Cabin will give our guests the best cabin experience ever.
Amber Lake is a semi-remote recreation area with fantastic Pike fishing-- nearby streams and lakes offer some of Alaska's finest Salmon, Trout, & Pike fishing. It is less than 20 minutes from Petersville road recreation area. Petersville recreation area is located at the south end of Denali National Park with extensive ATV and snow machine trails. There are also 100's of miles of trails directly from the cabin. Amber Lake is a 2 mile long lake and is perfect for a full spectrum of watersports and winter sports. Float planes often fly in to Amber Lake from Anchorage. Air taxi service can be arranged, along with snow machine and/or ATV rentals.
Thank you for providing such a lovely cabin, stocked with so many amenities. We so enjoyed the cozy indoor activities during the soggy weather and ALL the lake fun and outdoor activities during the sunshine! Sadly, no fish or bear sightings, but the crystal clear view of Denali, a real treat!
We could not have asked for a nicer getaway as a family... just perfect!
I can't say enough about our stay at the Amber Lake Cabin. Our family of 5 (kids 11, 9, and 6) vacationed in Alaska this summer and chose this as our retreat - we couldn't have been more pleased! The pictures do not do it justice. The cabin was very well appointed and comfortable. The basic amenities (linens, towels, kitchenware, etc.) were all as good as our own home, and the kitchen was well-stocked with spices, condiments, and coffee / hot cocoa, though we had brought our own. It was the "extras" that truly made this place special, however. As advertised, Tom provided bicycles, fishing poles, a paddleboat, kayak, stand-up paddle board, and rubber boat for our use on the lake. We spent 2 whole afternoons playing in the cove and lake - even swimming a bit (the water was chilly, but not cold - at least in late July!). The water was so calm, I just lay on the paddle board and listened to the birds and wind for a while - much needed peace and escape! We made fires in the fire pit and cooked hot dogs, sausages and s'mores. You don't get any of these things at the Princess Cruise Line lodges....
Hal and Nancy (the caretakers) were wonderful. We spent time just chatting and telling stories with them. We didn't get to see their sled dogs, but they offered many times to take us. They were more than willing to get us any assistance required.
To touch on some other renter comments - Yes, at the Amber Lake Cabin you are off the grid. We didn't have cell phone coverage to speak of or reliable WiFi at the cottage. Frankly we didn't need it. We are modern folks and it took a leap of faith at first - but WE DIDN'T NEED IT! Even the kids didn't suffer (much!) - they had to PLAY OUTSIDE! But for those in withdrawal - cell phone coverage picks up a couple of miles from the cabin on the road. Those who wish to rent the cabin - enjoy the peace!
The road is long - 12 miles gravel and 6 miles paved to get back to the Parks Hwy. As long as you budget time (about 30 min) - it wasn't a big deal. NOTHING is close in this part of Alaska. The bigness and remoteness is part of its beauty. We still managed to spend time in Denali - the Park, Husky Homestead, and ATV tour, though I would budget at least an entire early start day for that - maybe 2. We did a flight seeing tour out of Talkeetna (Talkeetna Air Taxi - see my Trip Advisor post about them - they were great) and really had a blast.
We highly recommend the Amber Lake Cabin. Book it and ENJOY!
The most tranquil spot ever experienced in my life of 60 years.
Over looking the lake with the most incredible reflections of the trees and clouds, not a sound, not even a breeze, I have never experience tranquility like this before.
The cabin was well equipped with all cooking facilities, comfortable living area, and great beds.
There was a boat and fishing gear provided, unfortunately 3 members of our party were not well so we didn't make use of the equipment.
Care takers, Nancy & Hal were there to meet us, very friendly and helpful.
They invited us to see their huskies and wood cabin, plus Hal took us out on more back roads to try and see some wild life, without success. We thourghly enjoyed our morning with them both.
A wonderful spot for a quiet get away but with activities at the door for every age.
Beautiful, peaceful, quiet! Didn't want for anything! Loved being "off the grid" even if it was only for a weekend:)
Our family had a wonderful trip last year and are planning on going again this year. Tom was quick to reply and very helpful. Hal was awesome and helped us with everything, even getting our trucks unstuck from the trail :-) (Thanks Again, you're a life saver). Two families went and we had four children with us. We all fit comfortably in the cabin. There are no surprises, it is nice, clean and as described. We loved every second of snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing. My favorite part? No cell phone reception. We were completely off the grid for a whole weekend and loved it. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for peace, serenity and exclusion. Here is a link to a YouTube video of our weekend get-away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QRd1Fh1hVA Book it and Have fun, it is WELL worth the money; tell Hal we said hi.

This was our 1st family trip to Alaska. We picked the Amber Lake cabin because of its beautiful serene accommodations. We were not disappointed! The cabin is just as wonderful as the pictures make it out to be. After arriving, it felt like home. Hal and Nancy were very hospitable and friendly care takers. We enjoyed there company and insights on our Alaskan adventure. Remember to make enough time to see Hal and Nancy's dog team! Tom was also accommodating and made sure we had 3 fishing poles. However we found fishing to be unproductive. But the lake view and boat rides were very soothing. I definitely would recommend the cabin to my friends and family. Because of our excellent experience at the cabin without a hitch, I can say in a positive way, No Surprises!
Thanks for a wonderful stay!
We had a great time at this cabin last week. Absolutely very well kept and has the best amenties inside the house. Its a bit of a long drive on dirt road for 12 miles to get in and out but once you are in the cabin, you will just not want to leave.
We drove to Denali and Fairbanks from here, Denali took full 3 hours and Fairbanks 5.5 (with some small stops). The road once you get out of the dirt road is fine.
The lake is fantastic. We used the paddle boat, kayak and the row boat. It was great to have the bicycles too. Saw several moose on the way to the cabin on the dirt road and another small animal that we did not know what it is.
Thanks to Nancy and Hal who take such good care of the house and the highlight of our stay was our visit to Nancy and Hal's house to meet her huskies. Our teenage girls cannot stop talking about that.
Thank you Tom and it was very nice meeting with you as well.
