Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday apartment in Malaga City - Casa Esperanza

2 Apartments in Pedregalejo with lovely sea views

Focus on Spanish life by combining beach, culture, monuments, Andalusian cuisine and night life in Pedregalejo, the beach suburb of the city of Málaga and just 2km from the centre - October 2003 saw the opening of the Picasso Museum and the whole of the centre of the city of Málaga was revitalised, 2011 saw the Roman Theatre and the Carmen Thyssen Gallery open too. Casa Esperanza is perched on a hill in a residential area of the old fishing village of Pedregalejo, where fishing boats still go out to fish right off the beach and supply some of the best fish restaurants on the Costa del Sol. Here you will be just another local resident. This is where the Spanish middle-class spent their summers at the beginning of the 1900s. There are few hotels here and this means that the beaches are quiet in summer and you will have them all to yourself in winter. Joined to the city centre by a beach promenade, there is also a good bus service into town as well as a taxi rank nearby. This is a good place to practise your Spanish and there are several schools in Pedregalejo that teach Spanish as a foreign language.

This apartment has one twin and one double bedroom, sitting room, kitchen and shower room. The terrace is a balcony over the sea, perfect for eating al fresco. Casa Esperanza was our home until 12 years ago when we moved inland to El Chorro to manage 4 holiday cottages.

Beach and culture: Casa Esperanza is about 2 miles from the centre of Malaga where you can find restaurants, bars, museums, Picasso’s home and Museum, parks - there are also good restaurants and tapa bars within walking distance, the fish restaurants on Pedregalejo and El Palo beaches are among the best on the Costa del Sol. El Morlaco park is a 5 minute walk from the house. Cerrado de Calderon is an urbanisation just behind the house and offers: banks, bakery, supermarket, shops, public telephone and hairdressers. Special dates: August fair (bullfights, concerts, flamenco, festivals). Easter (processions). Carnival (Feb). Christmas cavalcade on 5th January.

Discover Andalucía: From Málaga there are excellent communications with the rest of Andalucía. Whether you decide to rent a car or to take public transport there is a wide selection of places to visit either on the coast: Rincón de la Victoria, Nerja, Almuñecar, Marbella, Gibraltar.... or inland monumental cities like Córdoba, Granada, Seville, or you can even ski at the Sierra Nevada resort not forgetting the charming towns Antequera and Ronda. If you are interested in the wild side of Spain, there are several nature parks near the city of Málaga.

From learning Spanish to Moorish castles: There are endless possibilities to make your holiday a success. From learning Spanish to para-ascending....... discover Islamic Spain, the vast fauna and flora, the deserted inland areas, the cuisine, the wine, festivals, museums, the unique Easter processions, fairs, concerts, exhibitions,........

Let us know what you would like to do and we can help you plan your holiday and provide you with the information you require.

About Susan

I moved to Spain after I left school at the beginning of the 70s when Torremolinos was just opening up to tourism. After several hotel and office jobs I became a translator and never looked back. We decided to move inland 12 years ago, where we manage 4 holiday cottages in the Nature Park of El Chorro www.homeaway.co.uk/2678

Susan purchased this apartment in 1980

Why Susan chose Malaga City

The first time I visited Casa Esperanza, before I lived there, I was immediately blown away by the view, so relaxing by both day and night. I was already living in Pedregalejo so I rented one of the apartments first of all and then when the chance to buy came up I took it and I have never looked back.

What makes this apartment unique

Pedregalejo has still the character of a village although it is only a couple of kilometres from the centre of Málaga. It has also managed to keep its Spanish character over the years. There are few hotels and hostels here and this means visitors don't come in mass. At night from the sitting room you can still watch the lights of the fishing boats in the sea.

Winter break in Malaga

  • 4 out of 5
Coming from Northern Europe in January, we really enjoyed the light and the bright sun. The views from the apartment are very nice, with spectacular sunrises. The small protected balcony is great for morning coffee. When the sun disappears around midday it's time to walk down to the promenade in Pedregalejo and view the menus offered by the variety of restaurants found there. We really liked the fresh, grilled in front of your eyes.
The apartment is nicely furnished and well equipped, including good WiFi. You have to be a bit careful, not turning on the warm water in the shower at full strength or you will have a very short shower. The floors are tiled so it's a good idea to bring slippers in the winter.
The walk down to the sea front takes about 10 minutes, coming back a bit longer due to the fairly steep rise. Convenient buses to Malaga run every 10 minutes.

Beautiful View

  • 4 out of 5
We were a group of 4, including one elderly lady.

The views over the bay were absolutly stunning and the apartent was charming. We were impressed by the size of the bedrooms and all you needed was there. Susan, the owner, was very efficient and helpful. The apartment was clean and nicley decorated.

It was only a 5-10min walk down to the beach promenade which was very authentic and we enjoyed the lack of English tourists and the great Spanish food. In the evenig fishermen are roasting sardines on a logfire and you can chill out, eat and drink while watching the sea. We loved it! If you want Spain and not an English resort, you will feel comfortable in this apartment. I knew Malaga before and I think it is a great, beautiful city with la lot to see.

Unfortunately there are a few negative points:
The double bed in one of the bedrooms is very uncomfortable. Our sleep was also disturbed by a continous banging noise from the boiler in the bathroom. Probably this could be mended at one point? The balcony with sea view was very small and only suitable for 2 people. I got a different impression from the image on the website as it shows the terrace from the apartment below.

Further I would not recommend this property to anyone infirm (without a car) as the way down to the beach is very steep and the climb back up the hill is rather exhausting for older/unfit people.

But all in all we were very happy and (provided the boiler would be mended) I would stay in this apartment again. We had a great time!

Owner's Response: You are right the area is very Spanish certainly not a resort and the fish restaurants along the promenade are a great place to eat a simple meal and watch the world go by.
It is good to have some feedback from guests too, really sorry about the bed, I have changed it now for a new one and had no complaints since. The noise was the water pump that needed replacing, which we have done and no more problems there either..

Pedregalejo, just 3 kilometres east of the centre of the city of Malaga, still has the character of a fishing village, the perfect place to combine beach and fish restaurants with culture. Casa Esperanza perches above the beaches of Pedregalejo and El Palo and the sea breeze cools the house naturally. There are excellent fish restaurants and pavement cafes all along the beach promenade if you want to go out. A regular bus service takes you into the centre of Málaga or you can walk along the promenade... the Picasso Museum, the Alcazaba castle, the Cathedral, the Park, the Thyssen Museum and many other art galleries and museums are just a few of the attractions. The port area, Muelle 2, is a lovely place to have a walk, have a drink and window shop. The beaches are usually quiet all year because this is a residential area, not a resort, with several schools where you can learn Spanish in the vicinity. In winter the sun rises out of the Mediterranean sea, well worth getting up early to see, the view from the house is fantastic.

Other Activities: Museums, theatres, cinema, art gallery, parks, botanical gardens, shops .....

Notes:
A short walk takes you down to the beach and bus stop for the number 11 bus into town, it takes around 5 minutes, there are lovely old Spanish villas on the way with mature gardens you can admire. The excellent views and cool summer breeze the house enjoys come at a price, the walk back up is steep and may be too much for elderly guests, however car hire is not expensive and you can park in the street outside the house. Calle jarama is a cul-de-sac and usually quiet..
