I have been visiting the islands since my early twenties when I bicycled around Kauai, Oahu and The Big Island.
Years later, in 2001, I met the love of my life on Maui, which was a magical time. In our hearts, Hawaii is our home. We love to care for the land/gardens and the house in a way that makes it enjoyable for others to experience. We currently live part of the year in California.
Audrey Roumiguiere purchased this house in 2007
I chose this property/house because the women who owned it previously had put their heart and soul into caring for it since 1997 when it was built. They had planted and tended the beautiful botanical gardens and had kept the house in tip-top shape.
The home sits about 235 feet back from the street and is surrounded by vegetation. The gardens are a pleasure to do a walk-about every day and see something different.
There is a locking gate at the entrance which lets you know that no one will be just 'dropping by'.
The lay-out of the house is spacious and comfortable.
My husband and I spent a month in this paradise. Throughout that time, various friends came to stay. The house is inviting, warm, and comfortable, with all the amenities you could want. The beds are great, we all slept soundly. The gardens are luscious and green, with specks of color everywhere. Bird life is plentiful. We ate avocados and pomelos from the trees. Nearby is Pahoa, snorkeling in Kapoho Tide Pools, swimming in warm pool at Ahalanui Park, and convenient to the Volcano National Park for hikes... took many walks in the neighborhood. Mahalo Audrey, for sharing your acre of paradise and we look forward to returning next year!
My friends and I had a wonderful time at Audrey's property in Pahoa. The property grounds are beautiful and the home is very comfortable. It is well located near the quaint little town of Pahoa, though you will definitely need a car. Even though this is notorious as one of the wettest areas of the Big Island, we came to love it and looked forward to the incredible, daily downpours. No wonder the gardens are so lush and green!
A warm, clean and spacious home with a central great room for relaxing and conversation. The surrounding parcel is nicely landscaped with many photogenic flowering plants, lots of anthuriums, and a few fruiting avocado and banana, and a grove of bamboo. The dense jungle on the adjacent lots provides a buffer from winds and neighbors, whom we rarely saw, yet shared a friendly wave and smiles when encountered. Sunrise and sunset colors were visible in the clouds overhead each morning and evening along with a chorus of bird and coqui song. There were variable trade winds, a weak tropical storm remnant for a couple of days, and no vog during our visit
The owner did a good job of preparing us for our visit, providing us with written instructions and talking with us by phone on arrival. The kitchen was mostly complete, we prepared breakfast's, take away lunches for picnics at the parks, and a hot entree for our new friends. Drinking water from bottles is provided, although we were asked to refill them. There is a free county water fill station on route 31 mile near post 9 (East side of the road, one mile North of Walgreens). We kept the gate locked at all times and left the windows open for ventilation.
We have stayed in Puna before (Kapoho), and the proximity to Pahoa Village and the Pohoiki coast are good. We visited Hilo several times (and church on Sunday), snorkeled the Kapoho tide pools, swam in the cool waters at Hilo Bay (Leleiwi), ate dinner out in Hilo (Hilo Bay Cafe, Cafe 100 & Lucy's Taqueria), visited the Hilo farmers market (open daily, Sat was a big crafts market), also the Keaau farmers market for more fresh produce, the Prince Kuhio Plaza Mall (for gifts and ice cream), old town Hilo (shopping), attended a Farmers Meeting at the Hilo Aupuni Center, went to an ceramics show in Volcano, and made new gardening friends in Hawaiian Beaches (subdivision).
I would recommend this home as a great value to those on a limited budget and also a good introduction to Puna style living on the windward side of the Big Island. The only amenity we missed at this location was a Lanai. We used the roof awning between the garage and the front porch steps as an asphalt Lanai a couple of times to enjoy drinks, catch the evening cool down, brief sun showers, and the sunset colors in the sky. There were a few mosquitoes and small ants outside and a background hum of cicadas that we did not mind as a natural part of the damp jungle theme in August
This place is even more beautiful than the pictures itself. Nice and quiet neighborhood. The botanical garden is so serene. The rental was emaculate with a full kitchen and utensils for my culinary needs. I enjoyed my stay there and will be return guest.
My daughters (11 and 14) and I had a wonderful stay at this quiet, tranquil and beautiful retreat. The house was perfect. Well stocked, roomy, comfortable beds, nice full kitchen etc.,etc. Beautiful grounds which we took advantage of for great outdoor meals! Great lush, tropical location also. Close proximity to the volcano, awesome snorkeling and beaches. Pahoa village (with a market, Walgreens etc.), a free zoo and the Muana Loa macadamia nut visitor center are all very close.
Audrey was and absolute pleasure to deal with and I can't recommend this rental highly enough!
This house was absolutely perfect! The beds were comfortable, the landscaping was perfect and location was exactly where we needed to be. When we return this summer we will be staying at this house if its available.
