Family trip

  • 5 out of 5
Pros: location : 5 min to lake Lure, zipline, kayaking, 10 min to Chimney Rock
house : kitchen is fully stocked unlike the most rental houses that have bare
minimum. house is full of antiques, kinda like a museum. very impressive. all appliances
work well. never had any problems. lots of extras like free shampoo, laundry detergent,
welcome basket etc. we always had to bring things like that with us . in this case you can
bring nothing , everything is provided.
returning guests get a 15% discount
Cons: cleaning fee is a bit high in my opinion. more than we usually pay when we rent. we used all 4
bedrooms and paid $150 for the cleaning.
We had a wonderful time and there is a good chance we'll be back.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to write this review! We like to give a little something extra, "l'agniappe" as it is called in Louisiana, for our guests. The Welcome Basket and all the extras are just our way of saying thank you for choosing our cabin over all the other choices that are closer than 5 min to Lake Lure.
The housekeeping fee is based on number of bedrooms: we charge a flat $50 for the house, and then $25 for each bedroom needed, to make it more fair for smaller parties. I use a third-party cleaning service that sanitizes the house in between guests to ensure each guest arrives to s a freshly cleaned house with bathrooms, kitchen and floors that have been sanitized.
Some guests feel if they leave the cabin as they found it, that there is no housekeeping needed and request they not pay the full housekeeping. We expect that you will leave the cabin as you found it, and when housekeeping has to put toys back in place, game pieces and puzzle pieces back in boxes, chairs from the porch back in the house, cigarette butts left in containers around the property emptied and cleaned and magazines and reading literature put back in place before any cleaning can actually be done to the cabin, we have had to charge guests a small percentage of their deposit based on the amount of time it took to rearrange the house back to its original arrival condition.
One more note on the cleaning fee: we have an honor system with the cleaning fee. We provide an envelope and a card with the amount expected to be paid and we ask that you pay this the day you leave. Unfortunately, we have had some guests leave without paying this fee. When the housekeeping crew arrives, and no money is left, I get a call which means I have to drive 110 miles round trip to meet up with the housekeeper to pay so she can pay her crew. I have to recoup this money by deducting it from funds held for the damage deposit. Thankfully, in over 200 guests, we have only had to do this less than a dozen times.
I am in a network of other vacation homeowners and $150 for a 4-bedroom, 2000 sq. foot home is standard. I hope this fee does not deter you from booking with us again.

We remember you as great guests who left the cabin in perfect order and made it very easy for the housekeepers to begin mopping and cleaning and we thank you for that! We also have a rating system for our guests and you got 5 stars from us so we hope you will return!

Family Time

  • 5 out of 5
From the moment we arrived at the Cabin my family loved it. We had my sons 1st birthday party there and my mother got to see all of her kids in one place in over 10 years. The view was beautiful and the ducks were friendly all of the children were feeding them out of there hands. We had a great time and we will be booking another trip there.

Great vacation spot!

  • 4 out of 5
I chose this place for its peaceful setting and natural surroundings, and we were not disappointed! Sitting on the large screened porch, enjoying a cup of coffee or glass of wine, is a great way to renew a weary spirit. It was fun feeding the resident ducks. I gave them all names, and they came to dinner when called (wink). My little dog had a great time, too. The cabin was clean and comfortable, and the kitchen was well equipped. There were so many interesting things to do in the surrounding area that we couldn't begin to cover them all in a week. The owner gave us great service throughout our stay and even provided a much-appreciated welcome basket. I highly recommend this secluded and beautiful spot for your next getaway!

Owner's Response: Sandy, thank you for a glowing review! We are happy that you appreciated the private and natural setting the cabin and surrounding property provide--believe it or not, it is NOT everyone's cup of tea! But with your terrific 4-star rating, we think we are doing SOMETHING right! We roll out the red carpet to you and yours anytime you want to return! We LOVE guests like you! Thanks for taking the time to write such a nice review!

Family getaway including dog

  • 4 out of 5
We had a lovely stay at Preston's Thicket. Two families--four little kids, one big dog, and lots of catching up to do. The house is spacious and homey (with plenty of toys for kids too). We had planned to spend most of our time at the house, so we stocked up on groceries and enjoyed the fishing pond and making smores. The screened in porch was my favorite part though--could watch kids play and fish and catch up with the grown-ups. We took strolls down the road and picked wild blackberries and took dog for a dip in the river. It was a good fit for us--out of the way and a destination in itself. Cheryl was kind and prompt with all communication.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review! We have designed Preston's Thicket to appeal to parties like yours: family time, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown tourist traffic, and enjoying your pet in the great outdoors! Why do S'More's always taste so good over a campfire?? Because you only make them when you are on vacation!!!

Glad you had a great time! Some say the kitchen is the heart of the home, but at Preston's Thicket, it HAS to be the screened in front porch!

We hope you'll return to the Family Cabin soon and make more memories and more S'mores!

Great stay at Preston's thicket

Great stay at Preston's thicket
  • 5 out of 5
We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin. Cheryl left us a tasty breakfast of blueberry muffins and enough coffee to satisfy everybody. The cabin was clean and comfortable and the outside environment was excellent. The washer and dryer worked great and having a land line was really nice. This is our second stay and we'll be back for a third. cheryl is very nice to work with, too, providing excellent customer service. The listing was very accurate and the property very clean. Staying here put us within 5 miles of Lake Lure and downtown Chimney rock while allowing us convenient access to family in Forest City. I highly recommend this cabin for a fine vacation.

Owner's Response: What a pleasure it was to have you back at Preston's Thicket for a second year! This year we were able to offer more amenities and improvements since your stay last year, and I'm happy to say we have kept our rates the same so we hope you will book again with us for a third year to see even more improvements! As always, thanks again for being such great guests!

Home away from home

  • 5 out of 5
We had an excellent time at Preston's Thicket. We fished, roasted marshmallows, and went hiking at Chimney Rock. They fed the birds and ducks. We spent 2 days doing absolutely nothing at the lake. We took the little ones gem mining and they had a blast. The mining place close to the cabin actually has quite a bit of finds in the bucket. We have been to places that have barely nothing and the kids walk away disappointed. There are other mining companies closer to Chimney Rock. Our Children were not disappointed at all. We live in the woods of TN but cannot fit our whole family comfortable anymore. This was the perfect home away from home to Sleep 9. Most everything you need is at the cabin. There was not enough time to do everything we wanted to do. Plan your time accordingly if you want to try everything! Thank you again for allowing us the use of your wonderful home. I have brought home some ideas for my own.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure having you as my guests at Preston's Thicket. I live for these types of reviews because although we treat each of our guests above and beyond what a typical vacation home provides, we seldom get feedback. Thanks for taking the time to leave a review of your stay!
