A guest comment says it best. 'If you want a beautiful hideaway, this is it!! The grounds are wonderful, like a private park. Its quiet, relaxed and absolutely a wonderful retreat. Close to the main road yet far enough away so you never hear traffic, beaches a mile or so away and many good restaurants as well as grocery stores nearby. We liked it so much we extended our stay and will always cherish the memories of our time there. Truly a place of the “aloha spirit.”' - Guest comment

Our family is interested in gardening, fishing, photography and music and generally being near the ocean. In our travels, we discovered Kauai is perfect for these activities. Some family members call Kauai home, others of us visit as often as we can. Our community is welcoming, lifestyle is simple and the beauty of the island abundant. What more can we ask for, walks on the beach, cultivating our gardens, sharing harvests with friends, music by the fire, preparing meals of fresh fish and local produce.
Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) purchased this cottage in 2006
We visited Kauai a number of times before our decision to purchase Hale Kokio in 2006. The property was in the perfect location, showcased the natural beauty of the North Shore in a neighborhood that was developing in authentic island style.
The grounds were so pretty and the design was perfect for additional planting and cultivation. We all decided that this was just the right place for us.
Hale Kokio is private, comfortable and welcoming. We handle all aspects of your stay, adding a personal touch. We know the island well, have family in Kauai and are happy to share what we know about the island.
Our private hot tub is a much appreciated feature. Views of the sunset from the grounds are an extra special experience. The night sky is amazing
We had a fabulous stay at Hale Kokio. What a wonderful home away from home. Thanks for sharing it with us
We picked Hale Kokio for our honeymoon and were not disappointed. It was our first time using VBRO so we didn't really know what we were getting into but the house was BEAUTIFUL from the landscaping, decor, secluded location, and peaceful atmosphere it was the exact thing we needed after exploring the island. Can't say enough good things about the experience. The floppy eared bunnies (that we named Bun Bun and Carrot Top for our stay) to the roosters (that we called Peat and Re-Peat since they usually echoed each other) and the other birds and geckos were fun to watch, and the washer and dryer gave us the chance to not have a ton of laundry when we got back to the real world. Love this place.
We're so glad we found this place! It suited us perfectly; the location was ideal and Hale Kokio itself was a gem. We enjoyed the seclusion, with the opportunity to wander around the beautifully-landscaped grounds (meeting floppy-eared bunnies). As if that weren't relaxing enough, there was the hot tub to look forward to after a hard day at the beach!
The place was nicely furnished with everything needed. And I can't remember when I had slept so well. It was so quiet and dark at night, except that there were many more stars than we see at home.
We both highly recommend Hale Kokio to anyone who would like a respite from the daily hassles of everyday life, and who don't want the noise and hubbub of a resort.
Thank you, Eleanor, for making the whole process of the rental so easy!
My wife and I stayed at Hale Kokio for a week in early January. It was the perfect home base—central enough that we could explore the rest of the island when we wanted to, and comfortable enough that when we didn't feel like leaving, we could stay at home and nap, read on the lanai, or soak in the hot tub. The house was absolutely spotless, with a bowl of fresh fruit waiting for us on our arrival. The kitchen had everything we needed to prepare all our meals, the bed was comfortable, and the little living room was perfect for evening reading, playing cards, and listening to music. During the day the house is bright and airy, and surprisingly cool despite the lack of air conditioning. At night, it becomes obvious how little light pollution there is on Kauai, especially out in the rural areas. The stargazing is spectacular.
Arachnophobic renters should be aware that there are quite a few spiders around the property; it’s just part of being on the Garden Island. I suspect Rob and Lisa clean webs up on a regular basis. (They’re all over the gardens, but just a few on the lanai and the exterior of the house. There were none whatsoever inside the house.) Neither of two most common varieties—Chinese crab spiders and the large, handsome Hawaiian garden spiders—are toxic or harmful to humans in any way, but they are around.
This is a fantastic rental. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay that feels remote but is still close to the attractions, this is the place for you. My wife and I have been to several of the islands, but after this last trip we decided that the next time we visit, there’s no reason to go anywhere other than Kauai. And when we’re on Kauai, we’ll stay at Hale Kokio.
I stayed at Hale Kokio for 2 weeks in September and it was the most amazing experience. I have been to the island 3 times and have learned to stay away from the "condo experience". I spent weeks on the internet looking for the perfect get away as this would be the first time I traveled alone (so what I wanted mattered this time!!) This place had it all. The grounds are just beautiful and serene. A couple of days I just spent enjoying the lush grounds, laying out in the yard and reading under the trees. The owners are very quiet and private but they are always available if you need anything. I came home to a coconut on my porch stripped, drilled and ready to drink one day! Thank you again for that treat!! I have no complaints whatsoever about Hale Kokio. I have recommended it to my parents who also visit the island frequently. There are many books, CDs, movies and the hot tub was such a welcoming treat and hot every day for me. I enjoyed the ice chest, boogie boards, snorkeling gear and more. The place is so secluded.. the only person I saw for the whole 2 weeks from the house was a grounds keeper mowing the lawns one day. Thank you so much for this most amazing experience. I will be back to Hale Kokio (hopefully in October)!!
We stayed at Hale Kokio for five days of our honeymoon, and we wish we had stayed there the whole time. It's wonderfully secluded, but within an easy drive of all the overwhelmingly beautiful north shore sites. It might be hard to tell from the pictures, but the yard is pretty big and surrounded by vegetation, so it's very private. We enjoyed nightly dips in the hot tub, cooking meals while listening to cd's in the house collection, and wandering around the yard to admire the banana, grapefruit, and lychee trees as well as the most beautiful flowers all over the yard. The house had everything we needed – great kitchen and cooking ware, plenty of towels, even beach stuff like snorkels and a body board.
This was a perfect place to escape from distractions and really slow down to spend some intimate time together as a couple. If we ever return to Kauai, it'll be hard not to come right back to Hale Kokio.
This is a charming and peaceful place in the middle of a huge tropical garden. Completely private. Comfortable. Nicely equipped kitchen and laundry. We enjoyed the jacuzi on the deck every night. Rob and Lisa, who live next door, were very nice and helpful.
The North Shore of Kauai hosts the towns of Kilauea, Princeville and Hanalei. Drive north from the cottage and you will come to a number of beaches (from the famous to quiet and secluded). Try snorkling, parasailing, fishing or swimming at Anini, surfing or paddling or catching the sun on Hanalei, a beach party at Lumahi or early morning stroll at Tunnels. (free guides to beaches are readily available on the island)
The town of Kilauea is a gem. Try breakfast at the Common Ground on the former guava plantation, Joe's Fruit Stand for smoothies, the Kilauea Fish market for take out or outdoor meal. The Kilauea Bakery, newly expanded Healthy Hut and the general store offer quality food and supplies. Kilauea hosts 2 weekly farmers' markets. Consider taking the short drive to the Lighthouse Point
Hanalei hosts ecclectic shops, art galleries, surf shops. Rent kyacks or arrange a river tour from Hanalei. Be sure to sample a 'shave ice' or Bubba Burger as you explore this town.
Princeville is known for its world class golf course. Check out the Princeville Ranch for its list of activities including Ziplining, Horseback Riding.
Travel further north to Napali Coast for hiking. Find Ke'e Beach at the end of the north road.
Head east to explore East and South sides. Visit Kapaa, see Waimea Canyon, Kokee State Park, and so much more. Guidebooks are provided in the cottage.
You will be surrounded by the natural beauty of Kauai, its people, customs and so much to do. Come visit this tropical paradise
