Nestled high on a peaceful hilltop, the panoramic views are fantastic: to the northeast, the Atenas Valley with Póas, Barva and Irazú volcanoes in the background, to the southwest the Rio Grande Valley and to the east, the Central Valley. Ideally located in a gated eco-residential community, a thirty-minute drive from San Jose airport, this exquisitely crafted three-pavilion tropical hideaway is close to everything Costa Rica has to offer. Invite family and friends to enjoy the spacious pool and spa, lounge on the terrace with a good book, or surf the WiFi from the hammock.

Location: 26 miles northwest of San Jose; 15 miles west of the international airport and 43 miles northeast of Jaco Weather: Warm during the day; mild at night. The dry season runs from December through mid May. A stroll through the immaculate, palm-lined central park or lunch at one of the many typical small cafes serving local food in town awaits visitors to Atenas. Located on the Central Valley’s western edge, Atenas is a slice of quintessential small town Costa Rican life. Perfect home away from home.

This property had the perfect combination of shared common space and private space for individuals and couples. The house came with everything you could ever possibly need- right down to a tortilla press! The landscape around the property is gorgeous and well maintained and the pool and hot tub were very clean. The house caretaker, Elias, was incredibly friendly and helpful- and even rescued our frisbee off the roof. The town was welcoming and offered an amazing farmers market on Friday where we purchased a bulk of our produce. We took day trips that left us very tired by the end of the day, and it was great to seek refuge at the house at night to relax in the hot tub and watch lightning storms off in the distance. It really was the perfect home away from home.

A Slice of Heaven!

I recently spent eight nights with a few friends in this beautiful home, which served as our base for doing some exploring around Costa Rica. When we first arrived, our jaws dropped because the pictures could not capture how stunning this place is in real life. We got settled just as the clouds began to envelop us, rolling past the surrounding mountains. Though we had a pretty active itinerary in the works for our time in Costa Rica, we could barely bring ourselves to leave each morning, because we didn't want to miss out on this house! In fact, we spent the first couple of days entirely at the property, reading in the hammocks, enjoying the pool, lounging in the rocking chairs, watching the humming birds, cooking meals, and relaxing in the jacuzzi at night. Every little detail seemed so well attended to, from the soothing wind chime next to the pool, to the design of the buildings and landscaping, to the well-appointed kitchen (with a wide selection of pots and pans, pitchers and big bowls, tortilla presses, citrus squeezers, good knives, plates, cups, utensils, etc.). We all love to cook and this kitchen had everything we needed! Plus, on Fridays there is a great farmer's market just outside of Atenas, and several grocery stores to choose from. We rented a car from Avis at the San Jose Airport, which enabled us to make several day trips to surrounding areas, including sea-kayaking near Jaco (about an hour's drive away), zip lining in Monteverde, hiking around Arenal volcano, and exploring the cloud forest. We always looked forward to returning to this house to relax after an active day. Joe is so easy to work with, and Elias was always available to help with great suggestions. I could not recommend this place more highly and definitely hope to return in the future!

Absolutely Breathtaking

Thank you for sharing your magnificent home with us. One week was just not long enough to enjoy this piece of paradise. We fell in love with the views from our bedroom and we just did not want to leave. Everything about the home far surpassed our expectations. The home was very clean and extremely well maintained. The local property caretaker was so friendly and helpful. I was able to practice my Spanish with him! We enjoyed the hike from the home down to Atenas to buy groceries. On Friday there was a farmer's market in Atenas for all the local growers. The fruits and vegetables were the best I have ever had. I would recommend this home to anyone looking for the perfect place to stay.

Wonderful Villa

It’s true, the pictures do not do this justice! My husband and I spent 14 beautiful days at the Villa along with another couple. We were warmly greeted by the caretaker, Elias. If we needed anything, we communicated with him using WhatsApp. He even arranged for a Taxi to pick us up one evening so we could go out to dinner. (It gets dark at 6pm and we didn't want to drive knowing that we would be having cocktails with dinner). It felt like we were on our own private resort. Waking up to the birds singing in the morning and seeing beautiful sunrises was a highlight for me. We even saw Keel-Billed Toucans around the Villa. The pool and hot tub were also a hit. We rented a car (necessary if you plan on staying for a while). We ventured out to Manuel Antonio for the day but otherwise, we stuck to Atenas for groceries and an occasional breakfast or lunch out. We were perfectly happy cooking for ourselves. Everything about the Villa is well thought out. The kitchen has everything you could need! I would highly recommend renting this Villa and if we were ever to come back to Costa Rica again, this is the place to stay - no doubt about it.

Amazing Property

I've been tracking Joe's Atenas property on VRBO for several years, always wondering if it was as fabulous as the pictures and reviews made it appear. It was everything and more! Exquisitely appointed yet perfectly comfortable, it was the ideal layout for our two couples/4 adults group. The woodwork is truly gorgeous, throughout so tastefully decorated and discreetly presented as a rental; every inch immaculate. It truly felt as if we were staying as personal guests. Elias was wonderfully helpful, too. A perfect place for the week. Thanks so much for sharing your amazing property!
