The Yellow Canary Villa is a few steps to the beach and is situated in picturesque Duncans Bay. This area is unspoilt commercially and is ideal for family with small children, all ages. It is located half way between Montego Bay and Ochio Rios, off the north coast.
The villa comes with our gourmet cook/housekeeper Miss Iris, assistant Sandra, Curtis gardener and Johnny, driver. Johnny is our experienced driver and he does the airport run and excursions.
The Villa is a stone's throw to turquoise blue ocean and white sands. Just imagine going for a swim before enjoying gourmet meals made from fresh local foods, fish, lobster or the catch of the day, delivered to your door. All meals would be prepared according to your specification and served in an intimate setting either on the garden varandah or on the patio area which has a view of the sea. All that can be had at the Yellow Canary.
A short walk to the fishermens beach where live music are performed on Saturday nights. There you can enjoy a drink at Leroy's Bar, visit hand carved crafts and mingle with friendly locals/and visitors.
All the bedrooms /living rooms are fitted with louver windows which bring in lots of sea breeze into the rooms. All bedrooms are fitted with air conditions and ceiling fans.
The villa's master bedroom has an authentic king size bed made from Jamaican wood. The second bedroom has an antique 4 poster king bed and similar pieces of antique furniture.
And the villa boasts a hot tub jacuzzi set in a gazebo surrounded by tropical plants.
For sunbathers there are intimate areas in the garden for sunbathing with 4 sun loungers.
Babysitting - can be arranged.
Massage - can be arranged.
The Yellow Canary has an atmosphere of charm and privacy.
I live in London, England from a young age and went to school there. Recently I have been spending lots of precious time in Jamaica where I was born. I go back to London in the Spring staying there till Autumn.
I first visited Duncans Bay, 18 years ago with my young children and was walking along this quaint little lane which has a few cottages and directly in front the big ocean appearing through branches of almond trees which lined the banks in front of the beach. I bought one of the cottages. The living room opens out to the patio area which makes it light and airy. All the bedrooms have louver windows bringing in fresh sea breeze into the rooms.
The sea is turquoise blue and the beach is just wonderful with white sands. There is a green lawn that stretches along the beach which is great for children to play on. My children love this area and the beach and now bring their children to play here.
I love the flushed tropical scenery with an atmosphere of calm and peace here during weekdays. At weekends live music is performed by local artists at the Beach hut.
This area is ideal connection to many attractions and Montego Bay Airport is just 40 minutes drive.
Wow! Where do I begin, right from the airport we were greeted by the driver Johnny, energetic, warm welcome after a very long day of travelling that was appreciated. Thanks Johnny. Upon our arrival at the villa we were greeted with another very warm welcome Miss Iris. Really this lady is amazing!! Just let her do the cooking.(but you can also do your own grilling if you want) We so enjoyed our morning coffees and conversations with Miss Iris, we learned so much about Jamaica we never would have heard of staying at a hotel. I highly recommend going to the market at least once, a wonderful cultural experience, and with Miss Iris guiding the way it was awesome. Curtis the gardener can name every plant in his garden that impressed me, he always had a smile on his face, and conversation. This quiet little street is filled with friendly people, by day 2 we knew our neighbours (the ones who work there) on both sides of the street. Once you get past the hawkers on the beach the people here really want you to have a good time and enjoy the island. We left with very fond memories and new found friendships. We toured some, not near enough so we will have to come back and pick up where we left off. We toured the Rose Hall that was great, if you want dinner out there's a great little restaurant in Whitter Village Centre, can get good food and a beer it's called the Coffee Crème Café, it's small but the Jamaican owners are friendly had a good time there . The Martha Brae River ride is a must do, the scenery is breathtaking!! Don't forget your camera. The Jamaican bobsled in Ocho Rios is totally fun.The only thing I would recommend PLEASE get some new cushions for all of the outdoor furniture. The seating in the TV area could be a more comfortable sofa, and a back scratcher would be really handy. The beds are really comfy!! My tip for people pack insect repellent with a higher deet content, and some relief medication for bites. Not that I had a problem with insect bites, but my husband did.
Miss Veronica was a joy to deal with in making arrangements, since we went off season, she did make some adjustments to the cost, which frankly allowed us to be able to stay a couple more days. She is very responsive to all your emails.
Do not change money at the airport...wait to go into Duncans or change only a small amount for a day while you settle in. We had the pleasure of meeting Johnny, who was our driver and guide while there. He was very punctual, not to mention kept his vehicle very clean. If you make arrangements for him to take you somewhere, be sure to agree on cost prior to your excursion. He was gracious in taking us to the store close to the airport when we arrived, that store had many "American" items however, I would recommend taking to Miss Iris to plan meals before buying too much stuff.
This place is kept in immaculate condition. Ms. Veronica has a keen eye for picking the best staff! Our vacation would not have been as rich had it not been for Miss Iris, who made all of our meals (which were outstanding); shared local traditions; as well as suggested things to do. I left feeling like I had a new family member.
If you get the chance to have Miss Sandra cook for you, her jerk chicken was much better then the restaurants. Lest I not forget to mention Mr. Curtis who took care of the grounds and always had a smile to share, as well as stories about Jamaica.
I would recommend sending a shopping list in advance of your arrival, although Miss Iris did a great job of having somethings on hand. Make sure you buy PLENTY of bottled water, you will need it, Also try the High Mountain coffee, 1/2 the price of Blue Mountain coffee, yet the same flavor. Anything you need or want, talk to Miss Iris, she can let you know where to get the best of everything while saving you money.
There are local beachcombers who sell handmade wood carvings which were greatly appreciated when I returned. The beach is beautiful and pristine. Make sure you hit Leroy's down the beach at night for some reggae/drinks-they are a family run business who welcomes people with open arms.
Make sure you travel with a group at night...this is a third world country in a depressed economic condition. We were two women alone, so had to be very aware of our surroundings. Miss Iris; Johnny and Mr. Curtis all made sure we were safe and well cared for.
I would absolutely recommend this villa for your stay, as I plan to be back sooner rather than later.
This was one of my favorite vacations. If you like hanging at the beach and a very laid back vacation, you will love this place! Miss Iris made wonderful meals all week. I especially liked how she made her fish. If you are lucky enough to get Miss Sandra also, make sure she makes some banana cake. I suggest letting them do most of your grocery shopping since they know what to get. We went one time to check out the grocery store and that was a fun side trip. If there is any food from home that you can't do without, I suggest you bring it. Jamaican food is reasonable, but imported food is very expensive. We brought peanut butter, tea, crackers, granola bars and other snack items.
The house is very nice with wonderful gardens. We ran the A/C at night in the rooms but where comfortable during the day.
Make sure you check out Leroy's on the beach. We went dancing Saturday night.
Johnny took us to Ocho Rios for a day. We had a great lunch, tubing on the White River (my 10 yr old son's favorite activity) and visited the Fire Water Springs. Curtis showed us the local cave one morning which was interesting. The rest of the time we spent at the beach.
A great way to the real Jamaica in a safe environment instead of staying at an all-inclusive resort.
Everything about our trip was wonderful! Miss Iris is a wonderful lady that took care of us better than any 5-star hotel. Her food was fabulous and the villa was immaculate! It all made for such a relaxing vacation for us all. Johnny did such a good job showing us Jamaica and the local culture (and food). Although it was a long trip, I'm glad we went to Appleton Estates and back through Negril. We experienced more of Jamaica on that day than we could imagine. Jamaica has such a vast array of things to see and do, aside from just sitting on the (wonderful!) beach. This is the first time we had done a rental by owner, so we weren't exactly sure what we were in for. But Miss Veronica has done such a fabulous job with the location and staffing of the villa, it felt like home away from home. I couldn't believe that it really was as close to that little gazebo on the beach as it showed on the web! That was amazing!
Arrived on the Sunday, to be met by our very welcoming driver Johnny, who was only too happy to take us for a relaxing drive to the villa - via the local pub
We were then greeted by Iris, our chef and housekeeper who looked after us very well, while we were there.
The rest of the staff including the gardener Curtis and Sandra the other part-time chef and house keeper made our stay very enjoyable to.
The villa its self is clean and tidy and is in an ideal place to enjoy not only the beach, but travel for an hour either way by car and you reach some very interesting and bustling areas namely Ocho Rios or Montego Bay.
The only negative side was on the Saturday when some people were playing some very loud music, but this did not last long, so it did not upset our holiday.
Sights - Ocho Rios we went to Turtle falls this was nice and then went to there local market, very interesting but be prepared to barter.
If you want to give Iris a break from the cooking and fancy something else try Scotchies near Montego Bay is a really good place for traditional Jamaican barbecue food and very reasonably priced.
All in all we had a great time there which ended all to soon and would recommend to other people.
We have been home about a month and we are still talking about this trip and our stay at the Yellow Canary. From the moment Johnny picked us up at the airport all our needs were taken care of. I really can't say enough great things about Iris. I woke each morning to the smell of coffee brewing in the kitchen! Iris prepared breakfast and dinner for us and we really enjoyed sampling some of the local cuisine. We loved the fresh fish that she purchased at Fisherman's Beach, right in front of LeRoy's. Iris was a joy to have around and we learned so much from her about the culture and traditions of Jamaica. We found this villa to be exactly as pictured....beautiful. We loved dining on the back veranda in the evening and the front veranda in the morning. There was always shade in the yard and a breeze coming off the ocean and through the house. We would recommend going shopping with Iris if you get a chance. We shopped with her in Duncans as well as at the market in Falmouth and so enjoyed the experience. She helped us exchange money as well as shop for food for the week. We felt very safe and secure the entire time we were there. We found the Jamaican people to be very friendly and helpful. We found the beach to be very nice and not crowded at all. It is a very short walk from the villa. If you are looking for a relaxing place to stay by a beautiful beach, then the Yellow Canary is it!
Nearby attractions and activities. Just 10 minutes drive from here is Falmouth Town which is an old historical town with lovely old buildings, churches, shops, a hospital, and a great market. Some of the largest cruse ships dock here 3 times weekly. Historical plantation houses such as Good Hope Great House and Rose Hall are worth seeing.
Dunns River Falls, Swimming with the Dolphins, and River Rafting Adventure are a must and are located in Ocho Rios.
