As you turn off a two lane highway you descend on a private dirt road to a hidden riverfront drive with lovely rock walls, green grass, and fruit trees. Then you reach the Mission style adobe wall which opens onto a pueblo-style home on a tree filled oasis facing the river. The only people you need see are the occasional rafters floating by in summer as you barbecue outside.

You will have one of the most beautiful views imaginable while staying in this home! The cozy living room has a rock fireplace and a large window looking at the Rio Grande River (just 15 feet away). Mornings, as you have your coffee on the back portal facing the river, you may see our resident blue heron or our beloved bald eagle family overhead as well as the ever-present ducks floating downriver.

If you need more stimulation, then get in your car and do the scenic drive to Taos or Santa Fe where you have shopping, museums, skiing and many other activities. Also, there is a thriving art community in Dixon with a country, co-op grocery store, library, community center, and two award winning vineyards. Check out CHIRIPADA and VIVAC for wine tasting, which are under a mile away, and you can't miss eating at Zuli's restaurant in Dixon!

Glad we ignored the previous bad reviews! River paradise five hours from Denver Metro!
I almost feel I shouldn't leave this review in case this riverside retreat becomes so popular I can't slip out of the Denver metro for an idyllic escape at my leisure, but Donna and her little slice of heaven deserve it. Donna was a perfect host and afforded just the right amount of privacy and care of her guests. She's right next door to the home and available if you need anything. Even with it being overcast and Spring not quite setting in yet, we had a wonderful time listening to the river and drinking wine on the napping porch, and curling up next to a fire (both indoors and outdoors). Stargazing from the rooftop deck can't be beat and you will love waking up to the sunrise from the loft bedroom. If you're finding yourself suffocating in a concrete jungle, or need an intimate setting to getaway for a few days, this is the place to be. As a heads-up, the home uses radiant heating, which means heat comes through the tile floor and the home is warmed up that way. This is pretty typical for a lot of casitas and homes in New Mexico, so just be prepared to look for the dial on the wall and close the wooden window blinds at night if you need it to be a little toastier. No issues with cleanliness either -- this is a beautiful adobe in New Mexico, so expect some occasional dust and maybe the occasional bug no matter how much you scrub and sweep.

Secluded River Paradise
Such a beautiful, quiet spot, right on the Rio Grande River! Beautiful home and grounds. Nice area to relax outside and watch the hummingbirds and listen to the river flow by. In between Santa Fe and Taos. Local wineries that are fun to visit. Host was friendly and accommodating. Will definitely stay here when I come back.

This VRBO was a nightmare could not use the toilet. we should get our money back!
VRBO 229517 This property is in Embudo, New Mexico and the host is Donna Heinley. Pictures in your website show a beautiful home, nestled on the Rio Grande River. The reality was that the house was not useable and our trip became a disaster. We have stayed in lots of VRBO’s and never had a problem. This time, the condition of the house was so bad that we couldn’t stay there. The toilet overflowed on the first morning and we couldn’t get it to function . The host explained that no toilet paper could be used and had a sign stating, “please do not put paper in the toilet.” We had only been there a matter of hours and had not used the commode much when the overflow occurred that first morning. Toilet paper was not the issue. A functioning toilet is essential to the use of your rent-houses. We had to go outside to use the bathroom. Other problems include: ⁃ The house isn’t air conditioned (other than a small window unit in the bedroom.)We knew this. However, without opening the windows, it was unbearably hot. The problem is that there are no screens in the major windows and the house became infested with flies when we tried to cool off. ⁃ The house had numerous electrical issues, including bathroom electrical fixtures in the process of being repaired, with incomplete work left on the sink area. ⁃ The house was not clean, with a rodent nest under the outdoor grill, dust throughout the house and an unclean kitchen. My husband and I believe we should get our money back.

Paradise on the river
We loved being at this property. We wanted a place to unwind and this fit the bill perfectly. We kept a fire going and the host provided lots of firewood. We would definitely return!

I grew up in a very small town in Arkansas, but my family moved to Florida when I was 14. I attended USF in Tampa and then Boston College for my master's work in History. I went to Paris to finish my thesis and did not return for 5 years! My focus shifted to Fine Art and I began collecting 19th Century French paintings with my French partner. For 15 years afterwards, I represented these masterworks in Boston from a Townhouse on Marlborough Street and curated exhibits for galleries and institutions. I discovered New Mexico later and was captivated instantly so I built my 'get-a-way' (fantasy) home and have used it as my retreat from a very demanding professional life. I have found much inspiration here.

Why they chose this property

It chose me! It was the last place I ever thought I would be, however, I stopped to visit a friend on my way back from a business trip and she introduced me to the Dixon area....that was it for me! When I saw the land I fell under its spell and knew that I had to return. I have traveled all over the world and have not found an area as dramatically beautiful as northern New Mexico.

What makes this property unique

I really enjoy watching the wildlife on the river and canoeing. Swimming and rafting are also fun. Cooking out on the river and building a crackling fire in the kiva fireplace is always a wonderful way to relax. There are some very special secluded and magical places to walk or hike with breathtaking views. I guess the privacy of my land and the rustic charm of the place are what I enjoy most because I can totally relax and heal from the pressures of my business and city-life. Everything else just either slips away or falls into place here. It is paradise on earth to me. Don't forget to ask about the special price for wedding , family reunions and special events .
