Overview

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday chalet in Grächen - Chalet Schnee Eule (Snow Owl)

Chalet, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4 - 6)

Schnee Eule or Snow Owl, is located in the fairy tale village of Grächen. This vacation retreat is located in the Matterhorn Valley on the way to Zermatt. Grächen, known for plenty of sunshine, with ideal conditions for skiing and snowboarding in the winter, winter hiking trails, and hiking and mountain biking in the summer. Two ski lifts are within walking distance. A sport center with tennis and mini-golf is nearby. Grächen has excellent restaurants serving local specialties and fine Valais wines. Some restaurants have music in the evenings and weekends. You can hike to see a real glacier in less than two hours. The town center has an extensive event calendar with many activities like making cheese or arts and crafts.

Grächen (St. Niklaas) is a quaint, fairy-tale village nestled on a plateau high above the train stop town of St. Niklaus in the valley below. Trains from all over Switzerland will get you to this scenic train stop. If you continue with the train up the valley, you end in Zermatt and the Matterhorn.

This charming chalet is nestled in the Matterhorn valley with breathtaking mountain views of the Weisshorn, the Berner Alps and from certain locations the Matterhorn as well. The chalet offers a south-facing terrace and garden area that is warm and sunny with beautiful mountain valley views. The charming little village is great for families or for a romantic get-away. The chalet is a 5-minute walk of the village center, where a variety of shops, bakeries, incredible restaurants, hotels, and grocers are available. Grächen has excellent public transit and a renting a car is not needed. The village is extremely child friendly with many playgrounds and fun things to do.

Grächen is ideal for snow skiing and snowboarding in the winter. This car-free ski village offers slopes that are within walking distance of the chalet. The world-class ski slopes in Zermatt are about a 30 minute drive or by car or with the train. In Zermatt, you can even ski into Italy! Daily bus and train services are available to and from Zermatt and Grächen. Ski schools are very friendly and easy to find.

In the summer, Grächen offers some of the most spectacular hiking trails in the world, all clearly marked with the classic Swiss signs showing the direction and distance to your next destination.

Forested trails are located throughout the hilly landscape with many glacier fed water streams to follow. There is a fishing lake above the chalet where you can dine at a cafe shop right on the water and fish for trout. For high alpine trails, there are rugged rocky trails that will challenge you and provide a range of opportunities for all interests. Behind the train station in St. Niklaus, a small tram takes you up to the other side of the valley for additional hiking opportunities. The tram is not for the faint-of-heart as it is small and exciting as it goes straight up the mountain as shown in one of the on-line pictures.

The chalet sleeps four people, with two bedrooms and a couch opens up into a bed for extra sleeping accommodations if required. The chalet offers a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. The views from the kitchen are spectacular as shown in one of the on-line pictures. It is ideal for families, children or a romantic getaway.

Why the Owner Chose Grächen:

I used to visit this small mountain village as a child with my family every winter and summer. We spent so many happy times in the beautiful place. We would visit Zermatt, and hike all day. This place is very special to me and to my family, and that is why we bought the house.

About Pia Middione

I was born and raised in Switzerland and have been to Grachen many, many times as a child and as an adult. I received a business degree from a school in Olten and loved to learn languages. I lived in Lausanne for 2 years to learn French, I learned Italian and German in school an then decided to visit America to learn English. I was homesick and when I called my mom, she said, 'Don't come home until you learn English.' Then a met a cute guy that likes to sail by the ocean. We got married and I have two college age kids, one boy Marco and a girl named Martina that both speak Swiss-German. Needless to say, my English is perfect after 28 years married and living in near Santa Cruz, California. Thanks for visiting my website and I hope you can rent our storybook house in Grachen, Switzerland. You will not regret it...

Pia Middione purchased this chalet in 1990

Why Pia Middione chose Grächen

My mom and dad took our whole family up to Grachen every winter and summer. We skiied in the winter and hiked the mountains in the summer. My brother bought the upper unit and he asked me if I wanted to buy the lower unit, so we did. This little chalet is all you need to relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty and activites. It makes you feel like stepping back in time when life was simpler, people were nicer, and yet it has all the conveniences of modern life. Banks, TV, fine restaurants, music on week-ends, open trails to everywhere. You feel at peace here, and the Matterhon and Zermatt are nearby to visit and enjoy! Grachen is such a charming place!

What makes this chalet unique

From the Chalet in Grachen you feel like you are on top of the world. The mighty Alps surround the Chalet and most of the high peaks are snow covered year around. The air if pure and fresh and in the surroundings you can still see some cows or sheep grazing in the hills with an occasional encounter with a ram or mountain goat along the trails. A glacier is nearby and can be reached in less than 2 hours. This is the perfect place to relax and rediscover inner peace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Pia,

We had a great week in Grächen!

Lot's of sunshine and very Good snow conditions.

We went to the Thermen in Leukerbad and to Zermatt.

The house was very comfortable and we left it early this morning in the same condition as we found it last week.

All family members think we have to come back!

Thank you very much,

Best regards from the 4 of us,

very quiet and peaceful location, enough room, a bit 80s-style (we liked it) but new TV-Set, in beginning of sunny october almost nobody was there, we had 25° C and enjoyed the walks.

Beautiful Area

  • 3 out of 5
This is a beautiful Swiss Alps location with close access to Zermatt and the Matterhorn. However, a bit difficult to locate the property with existing direction provided by the owner. In addition, there are not enough instructions provided at the property to help guests understand how things work at the house (like how to use media resources and options for internet connection) and how things work in the village for eating options and other travel needs. Poor preparation to accept guests such that there was no toilet paper or soaps for guests. Had to scurry back down the hill for these items.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback. We have the following improvements and response.

Difficult to locate: Since the houses in Grachen do not have house numbers, we have now found that Google maps will pinpoint the location using 46.192957, 7.841174 GPS coordinates. It works very well.

How things work at the house (like how to use media resources): We have added instructions to the chalet to assist in operation of the TV. To our knowledge, there is no in-house computer connection but there may be internet availability in town.

Poor preparation to accept guests such that there was no toilet paper: We do provide one roll or more of toilet paper; since this is not a hotel, soap and shampoo are not provided. Items are available a short walk in town.

Wonderful week!

We had a wonderful time at this chalet. The kitchen was fully equipped for all our cooking needs. The view from the kitchen was beautiful! Loved walking to the town for groceries and fresh bread.

Comfortable Swiss chalet in beautiful ski area

  • 5 out of 5
The description of the chalet did perfectly meet the reality. Comfortable for a family of 4 persons, everything you need was available, clean and with beautiful views on the mountains. It was great that the beds were made upon arrival and the house was warm.
I absolutely like to recommend the chalet to others. The owner is very helpfull in providing extra information and answering questions.
If you use the house for a skiing holiday, you can ski towards the chalet, which is great. Although there was quite some snow we couldn't ski to the lift in the morning and had to walk with ski's downhill approx 10 minutes.
Ski area is beautiful, but not very big. Lots of facilities for small children.
A Wifi connection is the only thing we missed,

Can't say enough great things about Schnee Eule!

Can't say enough great things about Schnee Eule!
  • 5 out of 5
Our family stayed here in June - me, my wife, our 11 year old, and our 6 year old. We each loved it in our own way. In all we could not have been happier with our choice or with our stay. Quiet. Stunning views. Adorable and functional chalet. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking but there is a distinct advantage even when doing little cooking - when the kids go to sleep the wine can come out. It is a lovely 10 minutes walk to the bakery, supermarket, and restaurants. It is an easy shot to Zermatt but, I have to say, unless there for Skiing that is a one day excursion. We much preferred local hiking and exploring the towns of Visp canton. We also explored Vaud and Fribourg a bit which are not too far from Grächen.

This chalet is accessible whether you take the train to St Niklaus and the bus up to Grächen or if you have a car. Just plan a little extra time for the former. If in a car be prepared - between St Niklaus and Grächen there are some serious one lane, two-direction, blind switchbacks with a cliff on one side.

A small tidbit: it took us a while to find it the first time (even with asking for directions). As you go up the mountain from the post office go to the right of the building where you pay for and take the lifts. Follow that road for just a few minute walk and take the first left after you pass the minigolf course (you will see a large open carport on your right). A few meters after you make that left turn you can see Schnee Eule straight up. You will be glad you did!

Ideal for snow skiing and snowboarding in the winter, this car-free ski village with offers slopes that are within walking distance of the Chalet. The world class ski slopes in Zermatt are about a 30 minute drive away, where it is possible to ski into Italy! Daily bus and train services are available to and from Zermatt and Grachen. Ski schools are very friendly and easy to find.

In the summer, Grachen offers some of the most spectacular hiking trails in the world. Quite forested trails are located throughout the hilly landscape, while more difficult rocky trails provide a range of opportunities for hikes and casual walks.
