Overview

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Roatan

Uniquely green gated resort community & miles of secluded beach

For a great price you can stay where those who have unlimited choices and funds choose to stay. This very uniquely spacious and green resort like development is a destination for those who wish to experience all the beauty of the Western Caribbean.

The South Seas flavor of Palmetto Bay Plantation’s Balinese architecture adds unobtrusive artistry to the coastline it works to protect. Pristine coral reef just off shore from miles of secluded white sand beach is protected behind the gated road to the 150+ acres of meadows and gardens spaciously surrounding vacation and residential homes. Designers of the plantation have preserved the natural beauty of the bay while providing very inviting and comfortable accommodations and amenities.

The plantation is just a short boat ride within the reef from a public golf course, The Black Pearl. Additionally, the plantation hosts a National Geographic PADI dive operator, dock, pool, and restaurant along with outdoor and personal services.

The exotic, architecturally designed Balinese homes are cool and quiet with wood floors that are like silk. The 9 foot louvered and screened sliders let in the tropical breezes, scents of frangipani, chirps of geckos at night and the songs of birds during the day.

The drive to Palmetto is along the coast before getting to the more populated part of the island along the north shore. There is no need to compete with the cruise ship traffic on beaches or along mountain ridge line roads or drive through highly populated areas along narrow twisty roads.

About The Owner

To live our dream, my husband, son and I moved to Roatan from Colorado Springs where I voluntarily left a career as a IT Project Manager. Scott was part owner in a real estate business in the Black Forest and Andrew was struggling with high school at Pine Creek. Our decision to move and home school Andrew had lasting positive effects on our son’s future. We used a tried and true home school program and heavily supplemented it with courses from The Teaching Company. After high school graduation, Andrew became a Dive Master. He received a full scholarship to undergraduate studies and is now working towards a master’s degree. I developed Linda Kay's Bodyguard, a botanical bug repellent promoted by the marine park. Scott continued with real estate. We have moved back to the US so we may continue to enjoy the company of our son. We settled in the Low Country of South Carolina and Andrew is at SCAD. We have a very competent and carrying group of people there on Roatan who see to the needs of those who visit. You may see the team on the Tropical Island Villa web site.

The Owner purchased this house in 2001

Why The Owner chose Roatan

We chose Palmetto Bay Plantation because of the unique qualities of the development and homes. We very much liked the open space, serenity, beauty and miles of vacant beach. It is a home that has been easy and inexpensive to maintain. We enjoy our friendships with the people from the village nearby.

What makes this house unique

It is wonderful to go to sleep to the sounds of geckos surrounded by silence and cool tropical air, and wake to the sounds of birds. It is unimaginably peaceful and restful. I love the long walks on the beach where all I see is sky, water, trees, sand, birds and maybe a boat. I love seeing healthy, growing coral and fish so numerous they are like liquid. I know what and who to expect so that it is always refreshing to rekindle old friendships and make new ones.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks! I wanted to drop you a note and thank you for your beautiful home to spend our vacation in. We enjoyed every minute (even the sand flees!) It was a pleasure to stay in such a nice place. Everything was well taken care of and there was an obvious attention to detail.

We are safely back home and actually have arrived back to Spring! 60 degrees!

Thanks again for the use of your home! We hope to return to Roatan in the future.

Villa was very clean and overall in good shape. Villa is however not ocean front or ocean view or beach front it is back in the woods with a lot of bugs! A storm had come through a week or so prior to our arrival bring a lot of sea weed from the ocean ashore 10 days later they were still trying to clean it up! The property is ran by a new general manager hired by the home owners assoc. and what a mess they have! Our soul purpose was beach front and diving have been to Roatan several times over the years. Heather was very nice and did a great job. Clay never did fix toilet that was leaking all over floor 10 days later. Employees were very nice. We dived with Black Pearl Divers Serge was fantastic had it not been for him we would have left and flown over to Utila. Unfortunately with the wisdom of the home owners assoc. and general manager they no longer have a dive operation at this location! The food is great the beverage prices are ridiculously high but you are all but trapped there unless you want to drive and I do mean drive into town!

Owner's Response: While I am sorry that the guest found fault with his stay, Villa Serena is not ever presented as being water or ocean front or as having a water view in any listing descriptions including photos and static satellite images. when software updates are done by subscription rental listing sites the placement pin gets relocated. Because of this, static images with yellow push pins over the specific homes are on my business web site. This site is linked and referenced in email communications with inquiring guests so they can see the locations of the homes relative to amenities. During telephone discussions which I strive to have about the property, direction is given as to where to see this very descriptive image of its exact location. This rental IS NOT managed by the HOA. Many resort developments describe homes that are located in the original beach area as ‘beach front’ regardless of a view of the water. Palmetto Bay Plantation does the same with its homes having much deeper setbacks for buildings than developments on other bays. At one time this home had a water view that is now obscured by trees. This information is provided to potential guests willingly and oftentimes without being asked because we strive to have pleasant surprises. Biting insects can be a problem in the parking lot of the grocery stores not just in the treed areas or on the beach. The information file provided to guests goes into great detail about this and how to deal with them. Based on years of having Clay and Heather take care of this vacation home and guests and knowing just how proactive they are, the description of Clays response to the leak does not follow true to form. When asked about it, Clay said he went by the house several times and they were not in. He said that when he saw the two men within the development and asked of them when he could come by to repair the leak, he was brushed off with a comment that it was not bad and was being handled. Black Pearl does continue to serve Palmetto Bay Plantation as a dive operator in the same capacity it did when this guest selected Palmetto Bay Plantation and booked Villa Serena because of that dive service. I question why the guest(s) waited 45 days to express their displeasure with the rentals location and made it in the form of a review. Again, I am sorry that their selection of a vacation rental did not fit with their notion of diving with Black Pearl while also being close to West End.

Wonderful time had by all

  • 5 of 5

Just had a wonderful stay at Villa Serena, Palmetto Bay, Roatan. All of the staff at the Resort were very friendly and helpful. Heather & Clay could not have been nicer and met all of our needs. The groundskeepers were out every day raking the beach and landscaping the grounds. We walked the beach every morning and my husband spent the mornings walking the flats flyfishing for the elusive Permit. Found that Bulk Gourmet and Hybur seafood in French Harbor as well as the Eldons in French Harbor were the best for groceries.

We drove clear to the East end of the island (Camp Bay area) and had a wonderful lunch at La Sirena. Snorkeling was amazing at West Bay, Milton area, Starfish Alley, the Wreck at Palmetto Bay. The clarity was amazing. Watched a very large Manta Ray feeding on conch which was incredible.

We spent a 1/2 day on a boat with a very nice young man named "Allen". He can be found on facebook by the name Elsita Salgado and I highly recommend him. He picked us up on the dock at Palmetto Bay and dropped us off as well.

We have taken many trips and this one ranks up there with the best of them.

Villa Serena

We were so pleased to stay at Villa Serena. We found that the listing description and photos that we based our decision to rent were quite accurate. The owner sent us a wealth of information regarding the property and things to do during our stay. Heather, her on-site contact person, was just awesome in making sure our stay was enjoyable and relaxing. We loved being able to stroll to the beach each day to swim and snorkel. Great time by all! Thank you!

Owner's Response: We are so very glad that you enjoyed your stay at Villa Serena in Palmetto Bay Plantation as much as we do when we have the opportunity of going there ourselves. Heather is a jewel, there is not doubt about it. It makes all of us happy to know we were able to assist you in having a wonderful family holiday where the surprises are nice ones. For families that are rendezvousing it is especially important that the location be a good one and expectations are met. Thank you and we sure hope to see you again, Linda Kay

northern california beach bums...

Villa Serena was a breath of fresh air, away from the cruise shipping hustle of the West End and set in a collection of scattered homes in landscaped surroundings along Roatan's north shore. Palmetto Plantation has a small restaurant / bar with a pool and beach toys for residents(and guests) that is friendly and well staffed. The understated surrounds (maybe 20 years new) are well kept, very secure, and restful. A small dive shop is well run, right on the site. Flats fishing for bones & permit is right there, near shore fishing for the table is just outside, along with world class snorkeling and diving opportunities in an uncrowded & untrammeled area of the reef. French Harbor is just over the hill (15 min. away), along with easy road access to all other areas of the island. Linda Kay (managing the property) could not have been more helpful.

If you are seeking the Cancun-like experience of a large resort, with plenty of glitz, and lots of action / activities, Palmetto is likely not be for you..... but if you want to relax along a good stretch of Honduran sand, taking in the best of what the area has to offer, while taking some care of yourself in a very adequately equipped, well designed vacation home, Villa Serena offers all of that. A rental car is advisable (IMHO), and allows you to take-off in several directions, to explore all that the island has to offer.

I would certainly go back again!

Villa Serena Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time. Having been to several countries in Central America during which we rented homes, I have to say, this was the most comfortable and we loved Palmetto Bay Resort. We fit in with the ecologically friendly resort, and we loved the comfort of having our own house to go back to every evening after exploring Roatan or spending the day at the ocean. The walk to Palmetto Bay's restaurant/bar/pool is a mere minute and a half away. Beyond that is the beautiful beach. We had the best of both worlds, drinking coffee each morning on our deck while enjoying the flora and fauna (the hummingbirds were even more beautiful than in Maine). It is a vacation we'll remember for a long time!
