'We have traveled through more than 50 countries over the last 30 years and this was by far our best vacation ever! '
(Couvreur testimonial, August 2013)
The FIENILE is an independent cottage on a private villa property with resident owners. This historic agricultural outbuilding was converted in 2006 to comprise 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large kitchen, a living room and a sunny enclosed veranda. It boasts designer appointments, interesting architectural features, and an extremely convenient location: only 30 to 45 minutes away from Florence, Siena and Arezzo. Discounted rates for 5-7 nights (or more) please inquire!
The Fienile provides all the benefits of the countryside to rest and relax after a day of tourism, wine-tasting tours in the area, trekking in the hills or outlet shopping. The Fienile is a real home-away-from-home to come back to for that simple fresh pasta dinner, a bottle of local wine and a Skype call with your friends about your day in Tuscany.
- Upstairs are two bedrooms (can be either doubles or twins) and a bathroom with a 90x90cm shower (and a view)! The bedrooms are furnished in traditional Tuscan style and have beamed ceilings with terracotta appointments. The upstairs windows frame views onto the Chianti hills and Valley of the Arno. Even the stairway has a panoramic vista. For extra comfort there are fans in every room. All bedroom, bath and veranda windows have screens. Banister and child gate on stairs.
- Downstairs is a third bedroom/study and the second bathroom. The entire ground floor has beamed ceilings with antique brickwork and respects the decorative tradition of Tuscan country homes. This floor also hosts a panoramic enclosed veranda with a 180° view onto the Chianti hills. Furnished with cushioned benches and deckchairs, it is a peaceful place to read, write, or share a bottle of Prosecco. The ground floor sitting room features a SatTV-DVD and a lending library of guidebooks and recreational reading, as well as a fully equipped kitchen big enough to eat in (with granite counter tops and solid wood cabinets). All modern appliances (microwave, electric oven, 5-range gas burner stove, dishwasher and fridge/freezer), in-floor heating, washing machine (and clothes drying racks, iron & ironing board) as well as other amenities (satellite TV & DVD & Wi-Fi).
The Fienile has TWO garden areas with chairs, tables and lounge chairs from which to admire the views. From Il Poggiolo you can see the Valdarno valley, the Apennine mountains, the Sienese hills, and on a good day, all the way to Vallombrosa. The small patio area off the veranda and the larger garden on the other side of the house are set up for al fresco dining, sun worship, watching the sunset behind the medieval tower of Galatrona, and stargazing in the limpid evenings. In August there are many falling stars!

Guests appreciate the fact that Il Poggiolo is located in the tranquility of the countryside but conveniently close to Florence, Siena, and Arezzo (30-45 minutes drive). In 1994 Allen and I bought the property we had been renting for over 10 years. We are both Renaissance historians, working for American university centers in Florence, where we commute to work. The reasons why we ended up in Tuscany - on a hilltop in the Valdarno - are totally serendipitous, and entirely too long to go into here. But we did it, and lived in happy nonchalance, raising our daughter and commuting to work in Florence until the economic crunch began to make itself felt. In 2005 we had the belated realization that this property had better help maintain itself, otherwise we would find it very difficult to keep up the land and buildings after we retired. I keep buying lottery tickets with blind faith, but in the meantime we bit the bullet, hocked our souls to the bank in Montevarchi, and decided to carry out a dream: to restore and convert the villa’s barn into a rental cottage. The idea was that holiday rentals would help with the mortgage, garden maintenance, and miscellaneous upkeep until – when we are well into our dotage – we downsize and move into the converted barn ourselves. Read the first installment of the saga about this renovation process on the 'Wandering Educators' site (under 'Barn conversion')
Il Poggiolo in Tuscany purchased this farmhouse in 1994
Tuscany is not only a tourist mecca, but the climate is better than Paris and London (where we had been living before), and Florence is within an easy commute, so it is possible to live in the countryside and work in the city. The people in the area are wonderful. In fact, the Tuscans are the main reason why my husband and I opted to stay in Italy, to buy the family villa, and make a life here. The 'Fienile' was originally one of the agricultural outbuildings (a barn) in which we used to park the tractor and the car, store tools, and hang laundry. It has become a charming dwelling, where we plan to retire one day. In the meantime, we have had marvelous guests.
N°1. PERFECT LOCATION: Il Poggiolo is within easy reach of the major Tuscan sites of interest, perfect for day trips. At the same time you have the calm of the countryside and vibrant sunsets over the Chianti hills. For both gastronomy and shopping, the Valdarno offers excellent wineries and restaurants as well as a number of designer outlets (the Prada outlet 'SPACE' is a 5 minute drive from Il Poggiolo).
N°2. LUXURY OF SPACE : The Fienile has the advantage of spacious quarters and far many more rooms than are usual with vacation rentals. This can make all the difference when travelling with a group of friends or family, and the two gardens also offer the possibility of sunning in lounge chairs, reading in the shade of the Sofora tree, or dining al fresco.
N°3 OUTFITTED LIKE A REAL HOME: The Fienile is a real home, with all the conveniences and more beside. There is free parking on site (but you do not need to look at your car - only the view!), the gardens are comfortably furnished, inside there is a a large flatscreen SAT-TV, DVD player, and fast WI-FI, In the kitchen you will find the necessary equipment to make a cake or pie, or roast that free-range chicken you picked up in the market. Bedrooms have extra pillows, and cozy blankets and quilts for cool nights. If anything is missing, please let us know !!
n°4- EXPERIENCE of LOCALS: You have someone next-door who can give advice about restaurants and places to see that are off the usual tourist itinerary. You will not see your hosts unless you need them, but having someone on hand to help with the details of a stay or an emergency can be a blessing.
As we leave Tuscany we want to share some of our memories and impressions with others who might visit Il Poggiolo. Imagine a commodious half of very large casa colonica that welcomes you with flowers, the makings of a meal and a spacious kitchen as fully equipped as any North American home. But there is a big difference that constantly reminds you that you are in the hills of Tuscany. This lightsome house is filled with the richness of antiques against a background of arched windows and doors upstairs and down, all of which have views of treed hills, vineyards, olive groves and winding tiny roads. If you are on a writing mission your computer and other necessities are equally at home. If you are touring, you are within easy distance of endless sites of interest. Imagine that this house is up a country road and that it is surrounded by cypress trees and other beautiful vegetation through which you can see other colonicas spotted here and there across the hills. All this privacy and the vistas collaborate to create a quiet getaway from the hustle and bustle of the nearby tourist magnets such as Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Lucca and Pisa. The two very knowledgeable owners of Il Poggiolo will point you in the direction of nearby villages - Montevarchi, San Giovanni, Bucine, Torre - all of which offer little-known beauty and most of which offer Italian staples and luxuries. If you are willing to travel a bit further there are half-day adventures to beautiful areas like the Vallombrosa, which is a forest, topped by a beautiful monastery. Loro Ciuffenna is a small medieval town built on a ravine with cascading water rushing through it. In the central piazza you can sit with a coffee and eat some of the best gelato in the world while listening to the many sounds of the river. [...] A brief talk with the owners (both professional historians) will acquaint you with special itineraries, such as the route that connects seven Romanesque churches. After all this feasting on painting and architecture you then return to the wonderful house and its mixture of night sounds such as the hooting of owls, the singing of nightingales. Each morning the wonderful light of Tuscany is announced by a distant rooster's praise of dawn. And all this doesn't even constitute half of the area’s treats. Don't just imagine Il Poggiolo. Experience it, as our family has [as guests] over a period of 15 years. It has become a special place for all of us and remains in our minds as we go on
Fabulous!! My wife and I enjoyed two weeks in this beautiful restored Villa. As an architect, I appreciate the respect shown for the original structure in the restoration and we enjoyed the modern conveniences of new bathrooms, windows, kitchen etc all done with elegant taste. The furnishing was equally well done and complemented the Villa architecture as well as one can imagine. The Owners and managers are both history professors who have obviously put their passion into creating a wonderful facility. They maintain the building and the gardens in perfect condition.
The listing is well done and gives a complete description of the facility - it is well furnished with all the little things one needs for an extended stay and it would be a perfect place for a family reunion.
Located near the town of Montevarchi, it is centrally located within Tuscany so we were able to conveniently visit a different historic hill town each day: Bucine, Logo, Pienza, Cortona, Orvieto, Arezzo and Volterra all within a convenient drive.
Yes, we highly recommend this rental and look forward to our next opportunity to visit Tuscany.
We have traveled through more than 50 countries over the last 30 years and this is by far our best vacation ever! Even though we were there in August and it was 40° Celsius around noon :a bit hard to sustain ! But the house remains reasonably cool and allows for siesta or at least good nights . Sarah is very kind and very much in the details when it comes to making sure you're comfortable. The place is extremely quiet. We'll remember Tuscany and Il Poggiolo in particular !! We do expect to get back as soon as we can! Serge, Catherine, Ines, Raphaël and Stéphane COUVREUR.
As we pulled up to Il Poggiolo after a very long travel day from the US we were greeted by Sara and Alan and they welcomed us like old friends. The following three weeks in this lovely location were everything we could have hoped for in our vacation stay. Excellent accommodations, fully-equipped villa with everything we could possibly need, and a fabulous location for our sightseeing trips throughout Tuscany and Umbria. Our Fienile villa was a welcome sight after a long-day out allowing us wonderful relaxation and fantastic views surrounding us. Sara's recommendations and insight were a welcome bonus providing advice on shopping for food like locals and how to easily maneuver train travel up to Florence, a short train ride away. Our stay was wonderful. Thank you to our hosts!
Our family of 6 (2 adults and 4 children) just returned from a great week in Tuscany. The villa Fienile was perfect for our family. It was clean, updated and had everything we needed. My children especially enjoyed the veranda on the back of the villa. The garden area is great for exploring and looking out at the beautiful view. The location is away from the touristy area which was just what we were looking for. As recommended by the owner, you definitely need a car. We enjoyed visiting the surrounding towns while we were there (Sienna and Arrezo). We even took the train into Florence and drove a little further out to Pisa and Lucca. The kids also enjoyed visiting the thermal springs nearby. The only bad thing about our trip was having to leave. Thanks to Sara, the owner, for making sure we were taken care of!
We stayed at Il Poggiolo, renting Finiele for two weeks, one of which we shared with our daughter, her husband and three children, ages nine, seven and one. This was in mid October. In the beginning of our stay, the days were soft and warm and the evenings refreshingly cool. By the time we left, the weather had turned brisk to cold, with frost greeting us in the early mornings. Finiele was more than adequate for our brood. The kitchen is spacious and well appointed, and the pantry is stocked with some of the necessaries. We cooked many wonderful meals at the gas stove. The views are stunning for 360 degrees, vineyards, nearby hills complete with towers and farmsteads, and farther off mountains, but we most enjoyed the sunrise outside the entrance and the stunning sunsets from the small patio just off the sunroom. This bright airy space, including the patio, immediately became my “office.” The beds in the three sizable bedrooms are more than comfortable, and the bathrooms and showers spacious. Allen and Sara are wonderful hosts, attentive to every need and even anticipating several for the youngest of our travelers. An added bonus for those of you who are scholars of Renaissance topics, they are as well. The COOP in Levane became our go to source for foodstuffs, and there is a market in the parking lot on Tuesdays. Every site in Tuscany is accessible by auto or, many by our favorite, the train. We have been renting houses all over Europe for more than fifteen years, and this was our most pleasurable experience.
What a wonderful experience! Stayed in the Fienile for a week which Sara informed used to be a barn. Really! So we gorged and drank like the pigs that used to be housed there - Tuscan cheeses, meats, breads, olives and delicious wine, yet lost weight! Il Poggiolo is surrounded by vineyards in the hills, olive groves, chestnuts and wonderful people. Sara and Allen renovated the Fienile into a beautiful suite with all the modern conveniences. The finest 5 star barn I’ve slept in.
The Tuscany region has much to offer especially the food and drink. Firenze (Florence) to the north, Montepulciano is 40 minutes south, Siena to the southwest. We took daytrips and many times headed into the hills just to get lost and find vineyards. You won’t find much on the Autostrata. Bring wine and cheese for a picnic on a hill overlooking the beauty. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a wild boar. Wonderful.
Thanks again Sara and Allen. We’ll be back!
This scenic area of Tuscany provides both a country retreat and easy access to numerous sites of interest, from Medieval & Renaissance towns (Florence, Siena, Arezzo) to picturesque Castles, Monasteries and Hamlets. There are numerous markets with local produce & fine wines, handbags and clothing. Many privately managed & municipal pools in area. Thermal Spas 30-45 min. drive. Easy country walks at your doorstep, serious trekking trails in nearby hills. Designer outlets in the area (VAT tax rebates for non EU citizens). Cooking classes, painting lessons, bike rental and winery tours are some of the favorite activities after cultural tourism. There is something to do for visitors of all ages and interests. In the morning and evening you will see the roebuck deer in the fields around the house :-)
