DELIGHTFUL PRIVATE BLUFF-FRONT BEACH HOME ON ACREAGE W/AMAZING VIEWS, DSL, KAYAK

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Kilauea - Hale Kai Kalani

2BR (king, queen), 2 BA, low base price for 2 guests, sleeps 4 in beds

This delightful and comfortable, private, bluff-front Kauai beach home, on 1.5 North Shore view acres, is perfect for honeymoon couples, small families, friends, or those renewing their vows or just enjoying some much-deserved rest and relaxation. Conveniently and centrally located on Kauai's magnificent North Shore -- near a myriad of the world's finest beaches -- Hale Kai Kalani ('House of the Heavenly Sea') is a fantastic vacation home destination. There is food and gift shopping, golfing, and wonderful restaurants nearby, as well as a host of activities for great fun. If some party members prefer to stay home one day, there is the hot tub, entertainment center, and enchanting views to enjoy. Testimonials abound: 'We had a fantastic time in this house and on the island of Kauai. We spent the ten days of our honeymoon relaxing in this beautiful house and exploring this lovely island. I must say the photos on the internet do not do it justice, and the tandem kayak was a bonus'

Hale Kai Kalani is comfortably, tastefully furnished, island style, with soft cotton sheets in the bedrooms, tiled bathrooms, and a full-on entertainment center with cable TV, DVD, and CD stereo. For those who cannot escape fully, we offer wireless broadband internet access. Furniture and furnishings are oriental and island-style, with antiques and original art. The sunken hot tub is the perfect relaxer. The cottage even comes with a big aluminum canoe -- complete with paddles, life preservers, and a car roof rack. It is perfect for jungle river adventures on Kauai's numerous waterways. It's fun and easy, even if you have never canoed before! For those interested in preparing meals, there is a fully equipped tiled kitchen. For convenience sake, there is a washer and dryer, as well as a hot and cold outdoor shower for washing the sand and salt off when returning from Kahili-Quarry Beach, which is just down the road, or from one of the myriad of other nearby world-class beaches.

Consistent trade breezes generally keep you cool and refreshed. But, to be on the safe side, we have installed ceiling fans in both bedrooms, the living room, the kitchen, even on the lanai! Once again, there are a myriad of world-class Kauai North Shore beaches close nearby. Kahili Quarry Beach is within walking distance, Kalihiwai Beach and the trailhead to Secret Beach are just six to seven minutes away. When looking at a map of Kauai, use the Kilauea Lighthouse as a locater - it is the northernmost point on the island, and Hale Kai Kalani is about one mile to the east-southeast. The location is convenient -- close to restaurants, bakeries, four farmer's markets each week, and fun shopping. It is an easy drive further west to Princeville (10 minutes) or Hanalei (15 minutes) yet not far the other direction to the East and South sides and to Waimea Canyon on the West side.

Hale Kai Kalani at 4230 Wailapa Road, Kilauea, Hi. 96754 is a great place to have fun, but it is not a 'party house'. Vehicles must park on site; no on-street parking is allowed. Elevated noise activities or amplified music is not permitted after 10 PM. County of Kauai NCU # 4312-P and Special permit SP-2012-21

Owner's Response: Yes, the view is awesome...Ocean, river, valley, AND the Crater Hill National Wildlife Refuge. Many people, after discovering Kahili-Quarry beach, just a short walk or very short drive down from the house, decide that it is their very favorite beach in Hawaii! Come see what you think, but better make your booking today. The word's out on Hale Kai Kalani...it's wonderful!

Wonderful View!

  • 4 out of 5
We enjoyed our stay at Hale Kai Kalani on the North Shore of Kauai, returning to the island after 34 years! The house, itself, is very comfy with most all the necessities to feel "at home." We cooked most meals at the rental and found everything we needed to prepare our favorites. The view from the lanai is fantastic! The noise from the dirt road down to the beach is evident, but nothing that made us wish we had stayed somewhere else. The early morning "wake-up" call from the wild roosters was bothersome as we never did get to "sleep in," but I guess you trade that for the beauty of the location versus staying at a resort in one of the towns. However, you need to take this into consideration when thinking of how much relaxing you want to do because there is no escaping the chickens! We ate out very little, but would recommend the kulua pig sandwich at Bubba's in Hanalai. It was delicious! The sunset from Hanalai Beach is breathtaking and there's also a turn-out on the way there that is gorgeous at sunset if you're lucky enough to get a parking spot on the sharp curve in the road.

Owner's Response: We are very glad that Becky and Gary enjoyed their return to Kauai and their accommodation at Hale Kai Kalani. It is always wonderful to hear about our guests enjoying the convenient location, breathtaking view, fully equipped kitchen, amenities and comfort of our vacation rental home-away-from-home. I, Bruce, was happy to have found time to spend time "talking story" to these guests, and to help orientate them with changes and recommendations since it had been so long since their last visit.

Kauai's wild jungle fowl are an interesting phenomenon. Since hurricane Iniki in 1992, when they bred with many escaped domestic chickens, they are found everywhere all over Kauai, even at resort properties. Some visitors would like to eradicate all of these often beautiful creatures; others embrace them and their quirky ways. Some resorts try to control them by trapping and killing them, or even laying out poison. We will not do so. My suggestion to visitors who think they might be bothered by some early morning crowing is to invest in a pair of earplugs.

Mahalo nui loa, warm aloha, and e komo mail!

A Beautiful, Relaxing Month on Kauai

  • 5 out of 5
What a wonderful month we had, staying in this beautiful house. We slept amazingly well in both bedrooms. The views, both ocean and garden, were gorgeous. We are in our middle 60's and found the walk to the beach to be fairly easy and very scenic. The beach itself is quite private and beautiful. With the help of our strong son, we did launch the kayak and had a great paddle on the river. There was a little noise of cars and trucks going by, but it was rarely bothersome. We were able to relax and explore with our family every day. All our favorite places on Kauai were within a short drive's distance. Kilauea town and the farmers' markets were fun and gave us all the food we needed for cooking at "home." Bruce was easy to contact by email, and always ready to help guide us and solve any small problems we had. We have already recommended this house to friends.

Beautiful location

  • 3 out of 5
This house is in a lovely location and is very environmentally green (maybe soon they will have food compost waste for all the wonderful papayas, mangoes, greens, coconuts, etc.) that were so great to enjoy during our stay. The kitchen is well equipped it and the home is comfortable. It's close to lots of beaches/hikes to explore. The local farmer's markets are a great place to buy produce and Foodland in Princeville is good for things like milk, beer, sunscreen, pokey and sundries. The fish market in Kileau and Hanaleia are also good if you want to cook at home. The bed in the master room is very comfy, wonderful sleeps, but yes, as I've read, the curtain rod always fall down, but no problem, just leave it down because there is no one to look at you other than the cute birds on the lovely lanai. The lanai is very relaxing and a nice place to just put your feet up and chill; we do wish the candles had wax to burn though. The road traffic to and from the beach is an annoyance if you like quietness; the steepest part of the road is right by the house, so you hear trucks/cars all day long. It's a wonderful beach, lots of surfers to watch, but it is NOT a nice walk down because of the traffic. Advise to drive. It was one of our favourite beaches; once you are there you know why all the locals hang ten there. Unfortunately the first half of our holiday was disrupted by a resident rat. No fun coming out to rat activity and feces in the morning...put all your fresh food away. We called Bruce, who is a very warm person, and he was very responsive and brought/set traps for us that day, but it still took four days for my husband/Bruce to catch the bugger. Not relaxing! It's nice that they have a great green disinfectant to use on the countertops, but we wish the miele vacuum in the closet had a sweeping head to clean up the feces, as we just had a broom to use every morning. It was a much more relaxing stay once our visitor was gone, but we were already halfway into our holiday. We've never lived in Hawaii, so perhaps rats are a common problem depending on the time of year, or maybe we were just unlucky as no one else has appeared to experience them at this home. Vist Kahili, Ke'e, and Tunnels beaches, and do the Hanakapil'ia waterfall hike (a little treacherous if it is wet) when you vist. Just lovely!
Thank you Bruce and Cyndee.

Owner's Response: We are happy that Molly and Michael came to stay, and appreciative of their suggestions.

While many of our guests would prefer not to collect food waste for the compost, those who do are welcome to bring it to the compost pile at our family farm down the street. Just be sure to secure it so it does not attract ants or other pests inside the house!
Thanks for bringing the broken curtain rod holder to our attention; it was repaired during your stay as a result.

It seems that, sadly, you did not find the spare votive candles in the cupboard; those ARE nice out on the view lanai.
We are sorry the sound of those heading to and from the beach bothered you. It was particularly busy during the period of your visit, with great weather & beginner-intermediate surfing conditions attracting beachgoers, and the County workers grading and maintaining the right of way to the beach.
Cyndee and I walk to and from the beach from further up the road on an average of 3-4 times per week, and are not bothered by a passing vehicle or two. Often, they are our neighbors and we wave or have a short chat.
OK, you've gotten this far, and now I'm sure that you are all anxiously awaiting what I have to say about Mr. Rat. Well, it's true that this (mostly harmless, country) rodent proved particularly cagey and took a few days to capture in one of the traps I set. We do not like to use poison when very occasionally we are faced with this issue, and if you have ever experienced a dead or dying rodent somewhere inaccessible like in a wall, you know why. Life in the sub-tropics has its challenges, and while we do our best to mitigate and minimize them, there are hurricanes, tsunamis, and the occasional pest. Critters like living here too, and despite our best efforts to dissuade them without creating a toxic wasteland of poisons, they do occasionally slip through our defenses. Dealing with these issues is typical for those of us who live here full-time, but I do understand how uncomfortable people can be if they are unlucky enough to find evidence of unwanted visitors like rodent feces. Yuck, and my apologies for the experience!
Given the inconveniences suffered by Michael and Molly, I am grateful, and even a little surprised, that we earned a review of 3 stars out of a possible 5. We must be doing the majority of things right and, if you feel that staying at this view home above the beach for a price less than most hotel rooms here on Kauai, please get in touch.
Aloha, Bruce

My wife and I spent 9 days staying in this secluded corner of paradise. We loved it. The house was just as shown on the website but even better in the experience. The layout is terrific. Everything is in perfect order and clean. The lanai and hottub were great and we used them often. The outdoor shower was perfect and handy for cooling off during the warm afternoons or after a soak in the hottub. May have to install one in my California home.

The couch in the living room needs to be upgraded and maybe the screens could be secured a little better for mosquito prevention after dark.

Bruce and Cyndee were perfect hosts and willing to help (although we never felt the need for assistance) and very discreet.

This location was very handy to many great beaches and towns on the northshore. Just down the dirt road from the house is Rock Quarry Beach, great for swimming and surfing and we used it often. We plan on returning often.

Owner's Response: We are happy, as always, to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay at Hale Kai Kalani. It sounds like Craig and Vickie took full advantage of the location and the amenities. We give them thanks for their comments on fastening screens more securely and an upgrade on one of the living room couches, and will get on that right away! Thanks for your visit, and glad to hear that we can look forward to seeing you again in the not-too-distant future.

Truly wonderful

  • 5 out of 5
My wife and I spent our honeymoon here in this beautiful home. We feel that we could not have found a more perfect place. The location of the home on the top of the bluff sets up an absolutely gorgeous view off the back porch. Everything was as it was described, and if anything, better than described.
We spent mornings cooking breakfast in the kitchen and eating/drinking on the porch. The bed was quite comfortable (felt like a tempur-pedic). Our days were spent exploring the island. I am happy to say that we went to all sides of the island. Truly made the most of our trip. I HIGHLY recommend going on the 2.5 mile hike that starts at Tunnels Beach and leads to a secluded beach. Bring plenty of water with you, though. You will be wise to bring a hiking filter. The trek is arduous, but will leave you feeling more alive than you ever have been.
Bruce (the owner) was very professional. Gave us our privacy, and was quick to answer any questions that we had. If we are lucky enough to return to Kauai, we will stay here again. I find myself going back to this place in my mind almost daily. We are so thankful to Bruce and his wife for allowing us to stay.
