Why Marilyn Rosa-Bray chose Cabo Rojo

I love Cabo Rojo and its beaches. This was my family's favorite area to go for a beach vacation with its warm, clear Caribbean waters.

This condo is in Combate Beach, which is less famous than its sister beach Boqueron (10 min away), and because of that remains a 'locals beach'. Calm, non-touristy fishing town.

What makes this townhome unique

Cabo Rojo is 3 hours away from San Juan. Away from the city noise. The drive is worth it, if you are looking to be away from it all, immerse in the culture like a local, while retaining the commodities of the city with less than a 10-minute drive away

A bit inconvenienced but okay

  • 3 of 5

Overall we had a nice time but I didn't feel that they were prepared for our arrival. The person who was supposed to give us the key wasn't available so we had to wait about 30 minutes to get someone else to bring it to us. No big deal but a bit stressful to deal with that after a long day. And I was given the wrong information for the local contact, so I first called a very nice woman who spoke no English and who no longer worked for the owners.

And something was terribly wrong with the freezer when we arrived. It was covered in ice and the door wouldn't close. The refrigerator wouldn't work either because the "door" between the freezer and fridge was frozen solid. We had to defrost the fridge before we could use it. Marilyn knew that the freezer/fridge had issues and encouraged us to play around with settings - it's somewhat of a "game" she said - as contents in the fridge will freeze if the fridge is too empty. Something like that. I think a renter should be able to assume the appliances will work and they won't have to spend their evening dealing with something the owner knows to be an issue.

There was a small refrigerator in the kitchen but it wasn't plugged in. When I went to plug it in I noticed that the wires near the plug were exposed, and I was standing in water from the fiasco with the other fridge/freezer situation so I didn't dare try it. It was all a bit too stressful. The hot water in the kitchen wasn't turned on either.

And while there was a lovely outdoor patio on the roof, we couldn't use the hammock because the hooks were too high to get to. I couldn't find a ladder. I personally think the outdoor area should have been set up like the photos used to advertise the rental, but if the tenant is expected to set it up then it should be the owner's responsibility to make that easy to do.

I also asked for a second set of keys to be dropped off on Saturday as we had two cars. The owner said she'd look into it but I never received the keys or heard back.

Marilyn seems like a lovely person, as were the young men that she or Javier arranged to give and take the keys. Marilyn was kind enough to text back and forth with me to check in our well being and everything ultimately worked out, but I didn't feel like they prepared for our arrival very well and they should deal with some deferred maintenance and that darn fridge. Would I return? Not sure. I'm pretty low maintenance and easy to please but this rental experience was a bit too stressful.

Owner's Response: I am sorry that your experience was stressful. As we discussed over the phone, the correct contact information for the check in was provided in the confirmation of the reservation, the information via HomeAway and also the email I sent prior to your arrival. Only one document had outdated information and, unfortunately, this appears to be the one read. It was also unfortunate that your arrival was over an hour after the window of time that was provided (4-7PM). We made arrangements with the local person, but had to leave to attend another commitment. This added stress on all scrambling to get somebody to open for you. I am not clear in your comment with the hammock as this can easily be set up without a ladder. We don't leave it set up for clients since there are iguanas and monkeys in the area that can damage it or could be laying on it and would be an unpleasant surprise. As to the refrigerator, it works well, regular maintenance is provided. However, in the Caribbean, if the fridge is empty, will build freeze everything inside. We are pleased that you had a good time in the apartment, that was comfortable. Seems like the rest of the facilities were to your expectation, air conditioner was working, hot water worked, pool was clean, ect. Hopefully if we get another chance, we can coordinate a bit better.

Great rental 5 to 10 mins from beach

  • 5 of 5

Great rental for me , wife and mom- super friendly owners and contact people, property is not on beach and is semi ocean front but is very close to beaches - 5 /10 minute drive , safe area and rental was supplied well with appliances, utensils and dishes and AC. Information provided by owners is extremely helpful for anyone unfamiliar with area. Great access to rooftop , we were the only ones at complex - Very quiet up on the rooftop and complex but it may be different during busy season . Complex is very easy to get to and the restaurant near by had excellent food (if you want to eat out) the restaurant at the very end of strip (Annie's ) didn't look too clean but Kings was great (went twice) we will go back again next year.

Star-gazing from the Terrace

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this townhouse. It is described accurately; it was ready for us when we arrived, clean, and both levels are air conditioned. The bed was comfortable, and the bathroom/bedroom layout very convenient. It had all the items we needed during our stay.

We loved having our morning coffee on the terrace! It was a very peaceful way to start the day.

At night, the terrace was the perfect spot to watch the stars and enjoy the breeze (February). Absolutely beautiful!

We arrived early and shopped for groceries at Mr. Special Supermarket and for incidentals at Walgreens and K-mart in the town of Yauco. We liked the "El Coqui" coffee brand, and picked up everything we wanted for breakfast, snacks and lunch items to pack for the beach, including water bottles (we froze them and took them on hikes).

Things to do nearby: Drive to Cabo Rojo (early a.m.,) park and hike up to the lighthouse, walk to Playa Sucia beach, rest under the tree canopy of sea grapes, hike the cliff.

You could walk or drive from the townhouse to the beach (on the left of Annie's restaurant (less than a mile)--no changing facilities.

Go for a 40-minute drive and you could be hiking the dry forest in the town of Guanica (bring water). It has parking, restrooms, and a welcome station with a guard (directions and maps to the various trails).

This is a gated vacation complex. We were very happy that someone recommended this place to us--very conveniently located on this side of the island.

What a great get-away from the cold weather in the Northeast--it made coming back to the low temps a little more bearable. Would recommend to others.
