A lovely setting for a serene vacation! I found the beach, cottage and island beautiful and clean. I spent happy hours on the porch, as it was perfect for enjoying the sound of the waves while reading. I often looked up from my book to sigh with pleasure as I watched the leaves of the coconut palms move with the Christmas winds. The carefully tended yard bloomed with oleander and ixora, inviting the hummingbirds to dine. In the late afternoon, I reclined on a lounge chair in front of the cottage, as the shade from the house made this spot safe for my sensitive skin. A sun baby might have pulled the chair a little further into the yard at that time, but I was very pleased with the placement.
The U.S. style outlets and current were convenient. The wireless internet worked flawlessly. The microwave, cookware and utensils suited me. The refrigerator was small, but still bigger than I needed for a week's provisions.
On small islands, I typically expect multiple power outages, but I only experienced one during the week. It occurred during daytime and was brief, so it was not an inconvenience. However, had it occurred during night, there were battery-powered lanterns! The stove was not electric, so I could still cook without power, if necessary.
The cottage suited this solo traveler ideally with everything needed and felt VERY SAFE. In the guestbook, I read that several very loving couples enjoyed it together. I'll look at Jane's other cottages in the neighborhood when I want to bring another person, as I might need a bit more space when sharing. The neighborhood was quiet and the houses set graciously apart to provide privacy.
Jane was an admirable hostess! Thanks, Jane!
Rent a car from Marlon Brando. Also, take his tour of the island, as you will find it useful to help orient yourself.
For groceries, I preferred the IGA over the Best Buy. Try the Peardrella soft drink! Buy fruit at Mansa's. You can buy fresh bread at the nearby gas station, if you take the main road to the left of the cottage.
Sunshine's provided the best meal of red snapper! However, if you don't like LOTS of dressing on the salad, ask for it on the side.
Make the effort to go to Golden Rock to see the gardens and enjoy a lunch with a spectacular view. The lunch seemed rather refined for outdoor dining -- subtle, pleasing flavors.
The Botanical Gardens and Oasis Thai restaurant provided a nice, though more pricey, outing.
