Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday home in Carcassonne City - Square Tower Cottage
3 bedrooms plus upstairs bed-sitting-room, 2 bathrooms, sleeping 6 to 8

In Carcassonne, square tower cottage lies at the foot of the Tour Carrée (square tower) & the old city-walls of fortified Carcassonne -- a world-monument -- in the quarter of Trivalle where in medieval times houses were clustered together for mutual defence and gardens are still rare but here is a garden where a rural peace reigns despite the bustle of the old city. From the large balcony-terrace you can gaze at the ramparts & chateau, in the garden you can choose to sit in the sun or in leafy shade, yet you are only 200 yards from a little-known flight of steps which lead up into the old city with its many bars, shops, restaurants, busy squares, quiet corners, cathedral & winding lanes. What appears to be a small cottage is a rambling house inside of 130 m² well-modernised but still traditional, pretty, comfortable, cool in summer yet warm in winter with central heating & log-fire. A short taxi-ride from the airport or station, it is possible to holiday here.

Getting here: With a superb road-network, it is easy to come all the way by car. However for those who do not wish to drive, air travel is good. Stanstead to Carcassonne airport is the obvious first choice for many, but Toulouse, Perpignan & Monpelier airports are not too far, & even Barcelona & Girona just over the Spanish border offer economies. Car-hire facilities are good. But for those who wish to fly & not drive, taxis & public transport make it possible to have a good holiday here without a car. There is much to see without going very far, on foot, bike or by train - and by train longer journeys in the region are possible. Ask us for advice.

In addition to the old city of Carcassonne, there is another registered world-monument, the Canal du Midi, flowing through the surrounding vineyards to link two seas. There are lovely towns & villages, steeped in history, abbeys & castles associated with the Cathar martyrs perched on cliff tops. With the mountains of the Pyrenees & the Mediterranean coast at less than an hour's drive, all the challenging outdoor sports are available - or touring on quiet roads where driving is still a pleasure. Equally, 200 yards from the house, for those who love to walk, there is access to canal-side walks, the river Aude & its meadows, play-parks for children, & paths leading out into open country - and some bikes are available. The area is rich in fetes & festivals (from the balcony you can enjoy good music free), fireworks in July, pageants & medieval jousting in August, fine museums & exhibitions all around & good wines to taste & superb cuisine at pavement cafés & charming restaurants.

Other Activities: Explore vineyards, castles, abbeys, villages, coast and mountains

Notes: Access is not difficult for elderly people but all three WC are upstairs. There are some low beams so very tall people might have some difficulty. The fourth bedroom has been made into an upstairs television/sitting-room; with a double sofa-bed this can sleep two people, but because it has been made open-plan in nature it is also a circulation space so it may not suit all persons for sleeping. However this is not the only sitting-room & it is not on the ground floor. The ground floor space is large, consisting of sitting-room, dining-room & kitchen, although the only 'partition' between the sitting-room & the dining-room is the step down of a split-level floor. Of the other three bedrooms, one double gives on to the balcony & has en-suite wash-basin & WC, one double has en-suite bathroom & the twin room is a large attic with low beams in part. A separate bathroom leads off the bed-sitting-room. The street in front is pedestrian only with car access, with parking close by.

Summer Break at Square Tower Cottage

4 out of 5
Review Submitted: 29 August 2012 Date of Stay: July 2012
The cottage was exactly as described with respect to layout, comfort, facilities and especially location.Very comfortable accomodation for 5 people, parents and 3 adolescents. The surrounding area is beautiful, with medieval villages and the Pyranees within easy distance.
The music festival in Carcassonne is great fun and the restaurants are plentiful and reasonably priced.
The owner was welcoming ,friendly and easy going.
I would definitely recommend this as a base to visit Carcassonne and the surrounding area.
