In addition to the old city of Carcassonne, there is another registered world-monument, the Canal du Midi, flowing through the surrounding vineyards to link two seas. There are lovely towns & villages, steeped in history, abbeys & castles associated with the Cathar martyrs perched on cliff tops. With the mountains of the Pyrenees & the Mediterranean coast at less than an hour's drive, all the challenging outdoor sports are available - or touring on quiet roads where driving is still a pleasure. Equally, 200 yards from the house, for those who love to walk, there is access to canal-side walks, the river Aude & its meadows, play-parks for children, & paths leading out into open country - and some bikes are available. The area is rich in fetes & festivals (from the balcony you can enjoy good music free), fireworks in July, pageants & medieval jousting in August, fine museums & exhibitions all around & good wines to taste & superb cuisine at pavement cafés & charming restaurants.
Other Activities: Explore vineyards, castles, abbeys, villages, coast and mountains
