Outdoor recreatio; indoor comfort, peace and quiet
For three years we have chosen this location as a haven and an ideal place to decompress from normal responsibilities.
This "cottage," which could also be described a cozy and well-appointed three-bedroom home, is situated in a pastoral setting between two mountain ridges. Both the setting and the comfort of the house itself have drawn us to return, in addition to the owners' kindnesses and personal attention.
We have found that vacations here grant us opportunities for peace, great outdoor recreation, and unexpectedly interesting things to do. With the home as a base, we enjoy hiking on country roads or strenuous trails, bicycling, swimming. At home, we love coffee/drinks on the porch, playing music, collecting & eating fresh eggs, reading on the comfy sofas, cooking nice meals, watching movies, baking pies. This year we brought our new ice cream maker and really did it up with desserts.
Very near the home are lovely hikes, overlooks and scenic country roads. We enjoy the charm of the pool at Lost River State Park. And although Cranny Crow overlook at the park is hard to beat during mountain laurel season, we also appreciate Tibbets Knob and Big Schloss as hiking destinations with spectacular views.
Some entertaining side-trips have included: a great swimming hole/waterfall at Greenland Gap (40 mins away); a sweet little community fair (20 minutes); pancake breakfast at Mathias Vol Fire Dept. (10 mins); drinks/dinner at the nearby Lost River Grill (5 mins); Thomas Jefferson's Monticello (2 hours); Carrier Arboretum in Harrisonburg (80 minutes).
One year we invited some friends to join us for a few days, and the house easily accommodated the additional people. Our first year, we stayed at the neighboring Farmhouse (same owners), and now that we've been to both places, we find it hard to choose which. At some point we expect to rent both houses so that we might enjoy a trip to Lost River with a larger group, for it is clearly a terrific place for people of all ages who love the outdoors.
Owner's Response: We look forward to seeing you next year!
