We arrived late at night and the key had not been left for us. After several phone calls and the help of the tenant, we finally got in. And THEN the real problems began. The house had not been cleaned from the previous occupants and we found what we thought were mouse droppings throughout the upstairs. The housekeeper (bless her heart) came over to change the sheets, but told us one of the bedrooms was “off limits.” She told us that the droppings were not mice or rats, but was not allowed to tell us what it was. During the night we could hear “activity” in the walls and ceilings. We later saw BATS flying around outside the house in the early morning.
When I talked to the owner he refused to reimburse us—telling me that he didn't know we were coming and he did not have our money. We could not find another place to stay so we used the bedroom downstairs and our friend slept on the floor in the living room. I have forwarded all my emails with Donna, sent him copies of our cancelled checks and pictures of the droppings.
To this day Gary, the owner, has not admitted to having a bat infestation. I asked for a return of 50% of our payment since we were unable to use half the house. In addition, I had to micromanage the rental process—having to ask for the address, directions, location of the key and a local phone number shortly before we were due to arrive. Gary is not willing compensate us, but is willing to give us a free rental next year. Do I really believe all of that and want to go through it all again??
The home was beautiful and had all the bells and whistles to make our vacation feel as if we were right at home! The black out curtains were a plus in the bedrooms as staying up with the sun is far to easy to do this time of year! Everything was better than we could have hoped. There isn't anything special about the location and if it wasn't for this beautiful home, we would not have spent much time in Wasilla. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and all the accommodations this house had to offer
This is such an incredible place! We did NOT want to leave. The pictures (which are great) do not do this beautiful log home justice. We were in ahhh from the time we drove in the driveway and the ahhh factor continued as we went inside. This cabin in the woods was VERY clean, it had a NICE kitchen with a beautiful table, large bedrooms which were decorated beautifully, 2.75 bath, a cozy living room with a gorgeous rock fireplace (gas so all you had to do was flip a switch), and cable tv. The garage serves as an arctic entrance. It is complete with a Pingpong table which is great for adults and kids alike. We enjoyed our Christmas this year and definitely made some wonderful memories. Don't hesitate in booking this log home. I promise it's one you won't forget and will go down in your books as an unbelievably awesome experience! We WILL be back...hopefully this summer!
Hi! My husband and I and daughters stayed at this lovely Wasilla home as the first part of an extended stay here in Alaska. The description of the house, as well as its location do it justice. It is a wonderfully built and maintained home with all of the amenities and high-end finishes you could need or want. My husband worked during the week, and found the study just perfect, with great internet connection. At one point we couldn't figure out how to get the TV working, and the owner called us and was so helpful and friendly and fixed the problem right away. The girls loved running and playing in the yard. We had several campfire/s'more nights, and really enjoyed meeting the tenants that are currently renting the apartment above the garage.
The location is in a country neighborhood area with just a few neighbors on one side and plenty of privacy. We made our way through the woods to the lake from time to time, which was fun. The neighborhood dog Suzie is really sweet, and the girls loved hanging out with her. She is often near the house.
The location of the house worked for us. It's not too far into Wasilla for groceries, etc. We made it up to Denali, Mt Mckinley, Talkeetna and Fairbanks for the day from here. We also drove east over to Matanuska glacier and Eagle River to do some hikes. So, the house suited our needs perfectly to be able to see this part of Alaska before we moved on!
We stayed at the Wasilla House for 3 days at the end of our time in Alaska, and despite really looking forward to our stay there were a few niggly things that let the property down. The pictures were obviously taken when the house was first built, and the house has since been filled with the owners possesions - which made it feel like we were intruding on their privacy during our stay. We also weren't told that a lodger lives above the garage, and the $120 cleaning fee for our 3 days would have been ok, but we were greeted with old soap with hairs attached in the shower, as well as dirty coffee cup and coffee maker, and filthy dishes, which didn't give off the best feeling. The location was ok, but it's really just a suburban house - I think we were just expecting so much more so were a bit disappointed.
However, the kitchen is wonderfully well stocked with cooking utensils and herbs and spices - the 'fire' kept us warm while watching the Northern lights, and despite us adults having a few misgivings, the kids absolutely loved the property. The table tennis was a big hit, and we had many monopoly games, card games, and fun family times sledding down the driveway. We also enjoyed watching the neighbourhood moose, birds and squirrel, and Suzie the dog was hugely appreciated by our kids - she was a definite highlight. So in the end we had a lovely couple of days - thankyou.
Our family stayed at this house for a week and a half while in Wasilla for a family wedding the summer of 2010. It was an incredible house, even more beautiful than the pictures depict. It was incredibly clean, well-maintained, and the kitchen was so well-stocked with utensils, spices, pots and pans, and tableware. There was an absolutely fabulous gas grill on the porch that we used often, generally to grill salmon and halibut our family had caught while charter fishing (plus our family brought home 150 pounds of fish, from the same charter fishing trip). The house was well-stocked in everything, including bed linens, blankets, towels, cleaning supplies, etc. The house easily accommodated our large family, as far as sleeping arrangements, table space and kitchen space. The listing description and photos were all very accurate. The property manager was very accessible and helpful in answering all our questions, and the owner was very sweet and generous. We would not hesitate to highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to stay in the Wasilla area. This was actually our first experience renting a vacation home, and unfortunately I think we'll never have such a wonderful experience again--unless we are able to come back to stay at this house, which we would love to do again some day. We used the house as a "base" for our excursions, both in the Wasilla area as well as farther. Places we saw (all of which we would recommend to others): Thunderbird Falls, Mt. Alyeska, Hatcher Pass, charter fishing out of Whittier Harbor, whale watching out of Seward (saw glaciers there as well as other places), museum in Anchorage, Musk Ox farm in Palmer, and the Iditarod Trail Headquarters in Wasilla. It did involve a lot of driving in some cases, but that is par for the course in Alaska. It was so wonderful to be in Alaska during the "midnight sun". Again, we can't recommend this house enough.
