We have Turbo internet (up to 20/2Mbps) with our WiFi secure network.
Ohia Kai Hale has large windows to let the beautiful Kaua`i sun into each room. Tropical vegetation, including palms, mango, noni, mock orange, banana, and panax abounds on the property. On the lower level there is lush landscaping with a gas BBQ grill and laundry room with high efficiency Maytag washer and dryer for available for guest use.
The location of `Ohi`a Kai is ideal for vacationers, business visitors, and residents seeking short-term housing. It is fairly quiet; ubiquitous Kauai chickens and roosters and nearby neighbors may add aural color to the sound environment. The lot is one block from Kuhio Highway (no highway noise), within convenient walking distance of the beach, several churches, and the shopping and dining pleasures of downtown Kapa`a. It is approximately ten miles from Lihue Airport, a 20-minute drive at non-peak times.
Some popular visitor destinations to the north and their approximate driving times include Kealia Beach (5 minutes), `Anini Beach (25 minutes), Kilauea Lighthouse (20 minutes), Limahuli National Tropical Garden (55 minutes), Hanalei (45 minutes), and Haena State Park at the end of the road (60 minutes). Haena is where you will find Ke`e Beach and the trailhead to the spectacular Na Pali Coast trail.
To the south heading toward Lihue, Coconut Marketplace (5 minutes), Lydgate Beach Park (10 minutes), turn right at Coco Palms to see `Opaeka`a Falls (15 minutes). When you are back on Kuhio Highway heading toward Lihue, turn right to Hanamaulu to see Wailua Falls (30 minutes), Kukui Grove Mall (22 minutes), or continue on Kuhio Highway to Poipu (30 mins.) Back on the highway see the largest coffee plantation in the USA, Kauai Coffee. At the southwestern end of the road is Kekaha, with a very large and private beach, or before you get that far, turn right to see Waimea Canyon.
Your hosts, Bob and Marianne, are the owners and have lived on Kaua`i for fourteen years and will be happy to answer questions and make recommendations related to your special needs and interests, including hiking, kayaking, surfing, kid-friendly places, churches, shopping, dining, activities, Hawaiian culture, medical facilities, alternative health and personal care services. Please e-mail us or call us.
To reach `Ohi`a Kai from Lihue Airport, turn right at the traffic light as you’re leaving the airport. This puts you on Kuhio Highway headed north. Continue straight for about nine miles. Along the way you will cross the Wailua River, pass the Coconut Marketplace shopping and dining complex on your right, ans soon you will see Safeway on your left and the Waipouli Beach Resort on your right. Keep driving! Shortly thereafter you will come to a traffic light in front of a small shopping complex with a Big Save grocery store and Shell gas station on your left. The Post Office is in that complex! A few blocks further and you will see a left-turn only lane in front of the Latter Day Saints church.
There is no traffic light here, but you will see the entrance to Pono Kai resort directly to your right and a sign welcoming you to downtown Kapa`a in the grassy area ahead. Make a sharp left onto `Ohi`a Street. Note that this is a 90° turn! Don't make a soft left onto Ulu Street, a common error for newcomers. `Ohi`a Kai is the third and last house on the right side of the street. Our property faces the parking lot of the LDS church (white church with blue roof).
`Ohi`a Kai is clearly marked with green signs. Park in the space designated for `Ohi`a Kai Hale. If we are not there when you arrive we will have a lock box on the front door. If you plan to arrive in the evening, contact us prior to your arrival so that we can give you the lock box combination.
We also have a cozy 1-BR unit on the same property, `Ohi`a Kai Cottage. See our VRBO listing #95386 or visit our website for more details.

If you're looking for modest accomodations in the BEST location on the island of Kauai that's owned & operated by some of the nicest people you'll ever have to do 'business' with, that comfortably sleeps 4-6 people, then LOOK NO FURTHER :) [Unless you'd rather pay triple the price to be 'on the beach']
Bob (owner) & Donna (manager) take care of business with a personal touch. They delivered fresh, homegrown fruits & flowers two (2) times the week we stayed. Donna never let us down if we needed references, directions, or anything else during our stay. Their demeanors are second-to-none!
As for the property:
- NO traffic noise of vehicles bustling by, yet in the heart of downtown Kapaa.
- only 2 short blocks walk to the beach & park that's beautiful, public, and well kept.
- 2 or 3 supermarkets a short drive (really long walking distance) from the 'Hale'.
- Lots of local shopping & restaurants in downtown Kapaa (all within a short walk).
- furnishings not so nice that you feel like you have to be 'careful', yet nice enough & really feel like you're in a place to relax.
- kitchen has nearly anything you will need to get the job done.
- bedding is comfortable.
- double-vanity bathroom with tub/shower.
- front-loading washer & dryer downstairs are a definite PLUS (pack & haul less).
- tons of windows to open-up and enjoy the fresh island breezes.
- Unless you're accustomed to lavish condominiums and have spoiled tastes... YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!
Kapaa is almost located in the center of the 'Horseshoe' of highway that connects everything to see & do in Kauai, so "convenience" is the least you can say about it's location.
Another final PERK to mention is that it's sooooo close to the airport in Lihue, for a quick arrival or hesitant departure!!!
The Hale House was just right for us. Centrally located on the island. It is just a short drive to all our favorite beaches. Beach towels & boogie boards available. Very close to bike trail, with bikes available. Such a great place to spend Christmas & the New Year. We enjoy cooking, and didn't need a thing. Kitchen very well stocked. But, we were very close to our favorite restaurant & coffee shop. Olympic Cafe & Java Kai are walking distance. The beach is about 4 blocks away. Washer & Dryer very handy. The house is very comfortable, it is so nice to hang out on lanai, and a great place to hang wet swim suits! We are ready to come back.
We stayed in the Ohia Kai Hale for a week on a last minute plan. Bob and Marianne were so very good to work with and made our stay very nice. The hale is in a safe place and very comfortable and large. The nice thing is that you are in a private place without noise but right near all the stores and activities in Kaapa for one thing but more importantly, you can go to the north shore very easily as you are beyond the stoplights and traffic. We were unexpectedly given fresh fruits during our stay and found everyone very friendly at the hale. Everything needed is already in the house...oh, comfy beds and 24 hr. breezes!
This was our 4th time to Kauai and this was our favorite rental so far by a longshot! The location is perfect. Not only is Kapaa a great central location on the island to go north or south very easily, but this property is within walking distance of downtown Kapaa, the beach, the bike / walking trail, etc... It can't be beat! I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a comfortable place with large rooms, a nice lanai, and everything you would need for a great vacation! The owners are wonderful as well!
This was our first extended stay away from Minnesota. We rented 4 weeks and this was just what we wanted. We are familiar with the area and knew we wanted to be in an area that was "livable and walkable" and this is it. The apartment is spacious and airy, the beds very comfortable, and hosts Bob and Marianne were wonderful hosts. We felt we made new friends.
The nearby beach, a short walk with beach chairs, is lovely and never crowded. We have been to Hawaii 6 times and love Kauai especially this part of it. Many good choices for eating out and grocery stores to stock the complete kitchen. The first 2 weeks were spent showing visitors the island, with a rental car; the last 2 weeks left us carless and we walked or took the bus. The schedule is easy and convenient and we enjoyed talking with other passengers. On many days we rode to several towns and beaches - my favorite is definitely Hanalei - but we always welcomed the time to sit on the lanai at the end of the day.
If we get a chance to return to Kauai, we will definitely return to this sweet hale.
We liked : Kapaa is a nice place because it is situated in the middle of all the places you want to visit on Kauai. The Ohia kai is the vastest place we rented so far. It has two comfortable king size beds and a large lanai. Very friendly owner gave us fresh flowers and fruits.
We disliked : A bit old ! Rusty appliances. Window drapes give little privacy, Presence of bugs on the floor (but the owner was prompt to react when we talked about it).
