Hacienda Bellavista in Vieques: Unmatched views and total privacy. Secluded compound, at the crest of one of the highest points on the island, gentle ocean breezes, stunning views across to Puerto Rico and Culebra to the North, and over quiet bays to the South. Two separate homes make up the property: main house and one separate casita. Main house includes 3 bed rooms, 3 full private bathrooms, overhead fans, and air conditioning. Fully-equipped kitchen and family area opens through large wooden doors into dramatic open-air living area w/comfortable seating area and over sized custom-made dining table. Well-kept grounds (2 acres) and pool with 180 degree ocean views. Stairs lead from main house down to casita with full kitchen, seating area, deck, large bathroom, overhead fans and A/C, BR in a raised alcove. The casita provides couples or families a lovely option for privacy, just steps from the main house.
HOUSE HAS BEEN BEAUTIFULLY RENOVATED AS OF DECEMBER 2012-
RENOVATION INCLUDES NEW WINDOWS, NEW BATHROOMS, NEW KITCHEN- GRANITE TOP AND STAINLESS STEEL- NEW APPLIANCES---
We arrived in paradise with our 3 kids ages 15, 19 and 21! We have enjoyed resorts and rentals from St. Barts to Cancun and this spot takes the cake for us. Why did we like it so much? It had everything we wanted, and none of the extras that are often noisy distractions from the relaxing, laid back vacation we were seeking.
As we approached the property, we were greeted by a magnificent view of the Caribbean and Puerto Rico in the distance. We entered through the newly renovated, beautifully finished and well equipped kitchen, and walked through a comfortable family room onto the spectacular outdoor living space - a roofed terrace the width of the entire house, with breathtaking views, comfortable sofas, and a huge, natural wood dining table. Beyond, the pool glistened and the new BBQ beckoned.
The house is located a short drive from several small island grocery stores- less than 10 minutes in any direction. We loved picking up supplies and enjoying leisurely meals at home, as well as picnics on the many, almost empty beaches that were also a short drive away. Also nearby is a small town with several good restaurants and bars. However, this is a place to kick back and relax, enjoying the weather, the ambience, and the slow island rhythms. Some of us did have bring work along, and internet access was seamless via wireless wifi. The house was meticulously clean and the lovely, English speaking housekeeper welcomed us, and was accessible by phone throughout our stay for directions and activity suggestions. The hilltop location caught the breeze and, together with ceiling fans, kept us cool without needing the available air conditioning. Best of all, we awoke every morning to the sounds of birds and roosters! An extra bonus - the washer and dryer located in an out building so that the house stayed cool.
We were able to instantly unwind and fully relax fully in this artistically appointed, spectacularly located, and easily accessible shangri-la. We can't wait to return!
This house is spectacular! When we return to Vieques, which we do every winter, we will never stay at any place other than Hacienda Bellavista. My husband and I vacationed here with our 9 year old daughter. We had the privilege of being the first family to stay there since the renovation. The setting itself is lovely ,breathtaking actually. The house has been fully renovated, every nook and cranny, and is decorated in a creative, elegant, inviting way. It was extremely clean and well maintained, both the house itself and the gardens and pool. (the pool setting is like a scene from a movie) We lived mostly on the outdoor covered porch, enjoying our coffee in the morning or eating dinner in the early evening watching the sunset. This is one of the most peaceful majestic settings I have experienced. The owner and caretaker could not have been nicer, more inviting and welcoming, remembering us from the previously year and were thrilled to have us back. We feel like we are part of the Bellavista extended family. I would highly recommend this vacation home without any reservations. It is a very easy drive to the beaches and the house itself is located optimally between Esperanza and Isabella. We cannot wait to go back there next year.
The above is the more apt description of this house, the owners and agents who manage it, and my experience in renting it. I should have known when I saw (in 3/11) that the availability calender hadn't been updated since 2009 that the owner (an attorney, I believe, but why would that matter) was not very attentive to detail. The initial contract was a price inflated from the advertised price (a "mistake"). Until prompted, she never acknowledged receipt of my deposit; I was never forwarded directions to the house (there is no address), and never forwarded until less than 24 hr. before my arrival the contact number of her on-island agent, and that only when I had to prompt her for it.
Here's the best part, though: the on arrival contact telephone number was completely wrong (all seven digits!). So here I am, with my party of four other adults, w/the wrong number and no address, on the wharf of the ferry pier at dusk on a Sunday evening in this dusty little town. On the other hand, the lessor's number listed in the ad was only available 9-5 on weekdays. Both the agent and the owner, both of whom had my cell number, failed to contact me when I was unable to contact them, upon my arrival. Only the following morning, did they contact me when the weekday telephone number was answered. We on the other hand, thru many requests w/ locals and the car rental agency were able to finally locate the property and track down the keys hidden in the washer shed by 10:30 p.m., five hours after arriving, only to be awakened three hours later by three police cars with lights flashing rumbling up the long drive to the property (no sirens, no one got out just, a 1:30 a.m. visit from the local constabulary for what reason I don't know).
The house is typical island shabby, the linens third-rate, the third bedroom inaccessible (it's really a basement with an outside access, not thru the main house, and when you see some of the tarantula-like spiders that traverse the living areas, a dungeon would be a more accurate), defunct internet access, washer/dryer in an outside shed, police and island waterworks attendants traversing the isolated property at odd, always early hours (yes even the water was off for a few hours inexplicably).
The pool is excellent and the views stunning.
Vieques is beautiful and the locals extraordinarily friendly; don't however be seduced by the blandishments of this place.
