This cozy cottage is the perfect Michigan get-away for all 4 seasons! The cottage features birch ceilings, ash hardwood flooring, a living room, dining room, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath and a full kitchen and even a laundry room. Stocked with everything you’ll need to enjoy your stay, just bring the groceries!
We also have an extra Bunk House located on the property for an overflow of guests. The Bunk House sleeps 2 and has it's own bathroom and kitchenette.
They say “location is everything” and you won’t find a better location to enjoy all that Northern Michigan has to offer.
If you are interested in star-gazing, the cottage is located just a few minutes from the Headlands - recently designated as a 'DARK SKY PRESERVE' - one of only 10 locations in the USA! This is given to a few special areas that are free of artificial light. The night sky is breathtakingly beautiful!
In the winter, you can be on the slopes of Nubs Knob or Boyne Mountain in less than 30 minutes. If you prefer snow-shoeing or x-country skiing, the area offers the Headlands, Wilderness State Park or Mill Creek - all minutes away. The beautiful Mackinaw to Midland snowmobile/bike trail is easily accessed from Mackinaw City. Interested in a little more adventure? Try a dog-sled ride through the wilderness from a local musher! Also a great base-camp for hunters.
In the spring, birdwatchers gather from all over the country to catch a glimpse of the incredible hawk migration.
In the summer, you can be soaking up the sun on one of Lake Michigan’s most beautiful sandy beaches in a few minutes. Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Historic Fort Michilimackinac and the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse are all within easy reach – as is Shepler’s Ferry dock – the ultimate transportation to Mackinac Island. The cottage also comes with 3 kayaks and 4 bikes for your enjoyment.
In the fall, take the color tour through the “tunnel of trees” or enjoy spectacular scenery in the Upper Peninsula, an easy drive across the mighty Mackinac Bridge. There’s nothing quite like the sound of bugling elks during mating season at Pigeon River or the mysterious call of the loon on a quiet lake. It’s all here! Hunt, fish, hike, canoe, bike – you can do it all or you can just relax by the cozy fireplace with a good book.
We can help you find additional accommodations for your next family reunion, wedding or other small get-together.
We're offering a variety of Ecotour packages in the summer and fall. Interested in kayaking the Straits of Mackinac or the Les Cheneaux Islands? How about a guided bike tour or a birding excursion? We can hook you up with an experienced guide (all equipment included) for an unforgettable adventure.
If we don't have openings, we'll help you find a cottage in the area!

When Chuck and I met, one of the many things we had in common was that we grew up vacationing in Northern Michigan. As a result of those wonderful summers, we came to love the outdoors. It was such a part of us that we knew some day we'd have our own cottage there.
Diane Moreno purchased this cottage in 2006
Our son and his wife were married on Mackinac Island a few years ago and that was when we decided to purchase this great cottage. We wanted to provide a special place for our children to bring their children in the years to come and we found the perfect spot. In 2012, we completely renovated the Bunk House to give us some additional space as our family continues to grow.
We can walk to the beaches, Mackinac Island ferries, the lighthouse, the fort or any number of great restaurants or shops. We can drive to Sault Ste Marie, Whitefish Point, Tahquamenon Falls, St. Ignace, the Les Cheneaux Islands, Drummond Island or Petoskey in about an hour. We love the outdoors and the possibilities are endless here. Swim, fish, kayak, canoe, sail, hike, bike, scuba dive, hunt, bird watch - you name it! It's all available there.
We absolutely loved the beach on Wilderness Rd. The water is beautiful, warm, we even kayaked there :). We liked the Island, loved the City of Mackinaw and just loved being here at the cottage. We even cooked by the campfire - the girls really liked that!
This was a great place for a family vacation!! Our favorite thing was the beach! Thanks so much.
The cottage was perfect in every way. We were able to cook and/or grill our meals. Everything we needed was on hand. The cottage is wonderfully decorated, with a lot of beautiful books to look through. We did a lot of sightseeing. Our favourite was the Dark Sky Park minutes away. The trip to the island was another of our favourite things.
My husband and I and our two kids (12 year old boy and 8 year old girl) spent 5 nights at Minakwa Cottage. We had an awesome time! The description online was exactly what we saw when we arrived. I was very impressed that many items (bikes, grills, appliances) were new, very clean and in great shape! Every year my family takes a vacation and uses VRBO or homeaway to find a cottage. Diane's cottage rates at the top for cleanliness, accomodating guests, extras included (like bikes, pool pass, gas and charcoal grill, movie collection) and overall location! The next time we visit Mackinaw City, we will stay again! Loved the lighthouses, forts, the island and the headlands. Wonderfully relaxing trip! And we enjoyed the history of the Native Americans, French and English wars/relationships/treaties along with life around the Great Lakes 100's of years ago! I recommend trying Minakwa Cottage!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Our trip was a mom getaway to do the annual Zoo de Mack 51 mile bike ride.
We choose to stay in Mackinaw City, as it was the city for which we ended the ride. While looking at pricing for a hotel room, we decided to check out VRBO to compare. We were pleasantly surprised that for the price of the hotel room, we could stay at your cottage and have the comfort of a "home".
The listing on VRBO portrays the cottage completely!
Your cottage was cozy, gorgeous, homey.
This rental was perfect for my family. My small boys loved their bedroom and enjoyed playing games in front of the fire. We enjoyed the cleanliness of the cottage and we had everything we needed. The pictures reflect the property perfectly. We stayed here during the off-season. The price could not be beat, and we still found things to do, despite lots or tourist attractions being closed. We can't wait to return to the area when everything is open. The property is very conveniently located and an added perk for us was that we were a block away from the library. Couldn't check anything out, but my boys enjoyed anyway.
There were no surprises with this rental and we were happy to have stayed at this gem. Diane was fantastic to work with, and is the type of owner everyone hopes to deal with. Our party consisted of four adults and the cottage was just the right size. In addition to the local attractions, we visited the Canadian Bushplane Museum in Sault Ste Marie in Ontario, and gave it an A+++.
We had 4 adults and a 1 year old. Baby stayed in room with parents. Cottage was roomy enough for all. Not baby proofed, but most aren't. We had to keep baby away from front glass of fire place. No maater, we all enjoyed the cottage even though adults were not used to sleeping on twin beds. We were there for 2 nights. We stayed up late just to spend time enjoying the cottage. The fully equiped kitchen and little extras were appreciated. The books about Michigan and the Michigan decor were a nice touch. I am from FL, so it was really interesting. Everyone else is from MI, but enjoyed everthing just as much. We paid $15 for 3 days of internet, which was fine with us. We did not use the TV.
Mackinaw City is a great base camp for all of your 'Up North' adventures. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, graced by the Mighty Mackinac Bridge, everything is so accessible. You can shop, visit the historic Fort Michilimackinac or the McGulpin Point Lighthouse or the Old Mackinaw Point Light House. Take Sheplers Ferry to the beautiful Mackinac Island for a step back in time. Horse-drawn buggies and bikes are the only forms of transportation there! Lots of great shopping and fine resturants. Access the many bike and snowmobile trails in the area. Visit Taquamenon Falls, Oswald Bear Ranch, Whitefish Point, Saulte Ste Marie, Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Indian River - all within an hour. Some of Michigans finest sandy beaches are within minutes. If you enjoy casinos, there are 3 within 45 minutes! This is a great, year 'round destination. Fishing, birdwatching, kayaking, hunting, snowmobiling, Eco-tours, boating, biking...the possibilities are endless!
