Spectacular romantic hideaway in rural setting at the foot of Mount Kid. Converted Stable oozes rustic charm with gorgeous stone floor layout and lots of light. The conversion includes 4 skylights and an larger than life A frame window in the bedroom upstairs with views over the country side. The kitchen window is at eye level with the adjoining field where the cows are for viewing. We never quite know who is viewing whom! We are surrounded by working farms on all sides. This is an oasis for those seeking refuge from the hectic pace of life. Mount Kid offers total tranquility and privacy. Efficient wood/coal burning stove heats main and upstairs. Fully equipped as self catering however we are on premises to provide you with that extra special touch to ensure your holiday goes smoothly. For those staying a week we do a welcome dinner on arrival included with bottle of wine. We also stock a few items in your fridge as many weary travellers have little time to suss out the local supermarket.
Details of the bedroom set up. Upstairs is the main bedroom with dresser and lamp. There is also a ceiling fan and light. This bed is super comfy and sleeps 2. There is room for a portable bed which we have along with memory foam topper for comfort. Downstairs is a pull out sleeper sofa which is also comfortable and fitted with memory foam. This is in the conservatory and will sleep 2 as it is a Full size bed. All the curtains retract for privacy as does the skylight. The bed easily retracts to serve as a sofa and the room is equipped with Sat TV and Bose speaker system. It is ideal for a couple but depending on the ages and numbers of other guests can be quite suitable for up to 4-5 persons.
We love dogs...they are welcome but we do ask the breed and temperment.
Relax, reconnect and indulge yourself while we pamper you during your stay. Enjoy a glass of vino while you sit yourself by the Chiminea in the evening. There is a full Herb garden with fish pond in the middle. Cooks avail yourselves to our herbs and when available, some of our produce from our new poly tunnel and outdoor raised beds.
(Dinners also available. Please ask for sample menu if interested in having Chris cook specific meals should you not wish to cook all the time.)
West Cork is a Wild and Rare natural beauty worth visiting. With its plethora of Farmer Markets in Spring/Summer and endless activities, West Cork offers a unique opportunity to take a break from the crowds. If you're a 'Foodie' then Mount Kid is the place for you. Choose a fine local restaurant or let the chef come to you. Our local chef (well known for his fine cuisine) will prepare a meal served in our garden conservatory or the privacy of your own cottage. Candles, music and atmosphere abound! Pack a picnic lunch and head off to the Beara Penninsula which boasts some of the finest walking in the world.
Or visit Gougan Berra (one of my favourite) Mannings Emporium is a must stop over or back; Three Castle Head, Mizen Head, Loch Hyne, The Nature Reserve in Glengarriff or a sundry of other hidden gems. There are so many it's difficult to tell about all of them here. Also are the various festivals such as the Literary, Food, Short Film and Jazz...and more. Farmers markets are Friday-Sunday.
Chris has live in West Cork for 42 years. I joined him in 2004! He is gorgeous in character and a well known private local chef providing meals for holiday makers and special occasions. Chris is also adept at the art of beekeeping. Like so many we lost our bees some years ago but have a thriving hive for 4 years with honey production which we give our guests a sample! Chris came to Eire from England at the age of 24 and aspired to live a self sustaining lifestyle. Things have changed since and we now have a full vegetable garden and tunnel which our guests have leave to partake!
Patti is an Emergency nurse from Boston living here 10 years now. It was her dream to launch the cottage and make it something extraordinary and memorable for those who choose to stay here. It truly is a unique venue. Your advantage is that we are located on the premises to ensure that all your needs are met. She has worked hard at establishing a garden for not only ourselves but our guests to partake. Very successful as of this year 2014! Peas, potatoes, spinach...and so much more...the flowers and trees make this place something special. It is a bit of an oasis in the midst of farmland!
Patricia O'Brien purchased this cottage in 2007
West Cork boasts some of the most beautiful coastline in the world. There are no crowds here and lot's of things to do, or simply relax and get lost in a book. The people of West Cork are the most hospitable and friendliest of individuals, who truly care about their country. They are the heart and soul of this land. This is the kind of place that will stay with you for years to come. The comment we hear most from our guests is how wonderful the Irish hospitality is. Not to mention the unique mix of those who came here to live a less than ordinary life.
Upon arriving to our stead, guests will be 'baptised' as they enter through the tunnel of Fuchsia which Chris has been maintaining for years.
Sharing a meal or glass of vino...we often have the opportunity to know our guests intimately, which sometimes lends itself to the unexpected invite over for dinner and wine. This is probably the greatest advantage for those who stay here, in that we are available to see to all your needs, unlike most self catering places as we live on the premises. Come join us and share your own life story! For most guests this is one of the highlights of their trip.
This is no ordinary self-catering cottage! If you need a retreat from the whirlwind of modern life, this is it. Not only is the cottage idyllic, but Patti and Chris go the extra mile to make guests feel so welcome. I would recommend Mount Kid Cottage just for Chris's deliciously nourishing food and Patti's warm welcome alone!
Our four night retreat at Mount Kid cottage was perfect. We arrived after a long drive from Belfast to be welcomed with open arms by Patti, Chris and their dogs Pepper & Alice, who soon made friends with our collie.
Hearty, nourishing, local food; a hot tub under the stars and a field of cows looking in the kitchen window. This place is good for the soul.
This review doesn't do the place (of the people) justice - you've just got to go and experience it.
Thank you Patti & Chris for your warm welcome. We will be back in Mount Kid soon I hope.
We truly found paradise in West Cork - the REAL Ireland! The lovely spot atop Mount Kid not only met, but exceeded our expectations in every way. It was indeed seculded, but once we found our way through the labrynth of little hedgerow lanes, we found that it was located in a spot that that was also a good homebase for exploring SW Ireland, the Beara Pennisula and the Ring of Kerry --and all the lovely spots in County Cork.
It was very easily accessible to Ballydehob, Skibereen and Bantry, which were close by. Plus we took many day trips around the incredible coast line -- "the wild atlantic way" - breathtaking scenery everywhere! Our day-trip to Kinsale was an easy 45-minute ride (takes a bit longer if you stop every 10 feet for a photo as I did!) - beautiful through Clonakilty and even stopped to see the Dromberg Ancient Stone circle. We drove a bit further into Cork City too. There are so many hidden treasures in this part of Ireland!
Though our favorite spots were those recommended to us by our gracious and charming hosts, Patti and Chris! Crookhaven, Baltimore, Akitza, Barley Cove beach and the speactular Mizen Head!
After our days out exploring, it was always wonderful to return to our Cottage, which was so peaceful, serene and romantic --as promised. I felt as if I had gone back in time -- though with all the modern amenities such as a great suana and jacuzzi! The cottage itself was adorable and charming (very clean) with whitewashed walls, a gorgeous sea-stone floors and walls, comfortable bed with a big picture window.
Our hosts were charming, kind and fascinating - I left with two new friends! They made sure all our needs were met but gave us space & privacy to enjoy the place on our own terms. We spent whole days just relaxing at the cottage - never getting in the car. - Long walks exploring Mt. Kid, saying hello to the cows and epecially to our host's Horse (named Monday) and Donkey (named Pedro). Lounging and reading in the expansive and beautiful gardens or the conservatory. I enjoyed laying in bed at night - the quiet and the view across the fields bathed in moonlight - skies filled with stars!
It is amazing that you can be in the country, farmland, on top of Mt Kid, but also have seaviews too! The final approach to the cottage is a long tunnel made of fuschia bushes that leads you to paradise! It was serene, peaceful a walkers haven as promised. Perfect for us, a couple from Boston! We can't wait to return again!
First of all, Patti and Chris are amazing people. Patti made sure we always had anything we needed and Chris- his food is to die for! All smiles, hugs and hospitality. They are all about food, love and a good time (definitely our kind of people!).
Mount Kid Cottage has a very specific feel to it. It is always peaceful, smells of herbs and flowers, and all the locals are bombastic and cheerful. Even for us twenty-somethings, there was always things to do and beauty to see. The landscape of West Cork is so various from seaside villages to the rural farm land-- just breathtaking in some areas --the drives were fun and easy to and from the cottage. It was always worth it to come back in the afternoon/evening after a day trip so we could fix some dinner, drink some local whisky and take a dip in the hot tub (which we promptly did every night of our week-long stay!).
It was truly the most perfect trip we've had yet and really got us both passionate about traveling and meeting special people more in the future. It took me a long time to write this review because I really cannot express in words our time there, as cheesy as it may seem! But I've thought about Mount Kid and Patti and Chris every day since. We'll definitely be back.
Our first reaction on arriving near the cottage was that it was so easy to get lost down all the tiny country lanes. They do all look the same but follow Pattis directions closely and you will be fine. Do make mental notes of landmarks such as trees, gates and the such as we got lost a couple of times when trying to get out for the day!!
The cottage is an ideal bolt hole for 2 and is 'rustic' in its appearance. Dont expect ultra luxury or all flashy mod cons - if so this is not for you. What you get is charm, character and an extremely welcome from the hosts. For us it is more about the people involved than having every luxury at your fingertips. Your stay will be comfortable and everything is there that you could need. The bed is super comfy with quality bedding. Towels provided. Great plus point! Even on the 1 very wet day we had we were more than comfortable - just reading and watching DVDs - a total chill out pad! It is a bit of a drive to anywhere of any size (so if you are after wild nightlife this is not for you) so we tended to cook ourselves but then its so much easer too have a drink in the evening. The jacuzzi and sauna are great additions-all totally private and very decadent!
Patti and Chris are very congenial hosts and we were delighted to have dinner one evening with them and 2 of their friends. Fantastic company and superb hosts! Highly recommended!!
Endless words to describe our MAGNIFICANT two week stay with Patti & Chris...both were so warm & welcoming & extremely hospitable & attentive!!! Patti even came to our rescue on our arrival in addition to greeting us with an exquisite savory romantic dinner & wine. The quaint rustic cozy cottage was AMAZING..so inviting, comfortable, roomy & clean. The sauna & jacuzzi were abosolutely AWESOME, a must along with the garden!!! At the cottage you will find the surroundings so peaceful & serene. There is so much to see and do in the West Cork area of Ireland, AH, GORGEOUS, GORGEOUS; we highly recommend Patti's tips & recommendation & Chris's meal catering (delicious, tasty unforgetable meals) and of course Kid Cottage. What truly made our stay exceptionally special were Patti & Chris, here's to our friendship & great times & memories....hope to see you in soon!!!!!!
Our family (2 teenage girls, my husband and myself) stayed at Patti and Chris's guest house for one week and enjoyed every minute. Patti and Chris are fantastic hosts! From the moment I started arranging our stay in Ballydehob Patti was very helpful and offered her assistance in making our vacation a success. We were greeted with a beautiful and exquisite first meal which truly was delicious and welcoming. The house was comfortable, funky and well set-up. We cooked most of our meals in the cottage and did not lack any of the basic cooking implements. The main bed is super comfy and has a fabulous view overlooking the fields and valley around the property. The second bed is a very new and comfortable sofa-bed that the girls reported was also great to sleep on. We thoroughly and frequently soaked in the private, warm jacuzzi which was especially appreciated on one particular misty, cool evening. Although the guest cottage is remote, it is not too far from the town of Ballydehob where we satisfied our daily need for chips and Guinness. We made many day trips to the towns in the near vicinity and even explored further afield to Kerry and Dingle. Our trip to Ireland was fantastic and was made more memorable because we were fortunate in finding Patti and Chris's cottage. Thanks!!!
Heir Island is a treat for dinner. We are but 4-5 miles from the ferry which is about 5 minutes to the island. There you will be seated and treated to dinner and a wonderful evening mingling with other guests. It is truly a West Cork experience.
Barley Cove Beach. It does not get better than this. The beach is pristine with tidal pools and sand dunes as a back drop. Never too crowded it is a gem to take a picnic. Or go to one of the fine pub restaurants in Crookhaven for a pint and try some West Cork crab. Then plan your final jaunt to the Mizen and Three Castle Head which is pure magic with castle ruins and a lake when you reach the castles with the wild Atlantic Ocean in full view.
Lough Hyne is a small salt-water lake in West Cork renowned for its beauty, tranquility and unique natural history. People have worked and lived around Lough Hyne some 4,000 years. It is a special place of archaeology, history, folklore and ecology. Well worth a visit. In Summer months with the long days of light until 10pm or so, you can take a guided Kayak trip.
Gougane Barra is one of my favourites. A very special setting with lake and monastery and Forest Park. There is too much to say about this little gem to do it justice. You can find out more if you put it in a search engine on the internet.
There are more amazing places such as Cape Clear and Sherkin Island. Drive to Baltimore and take the ferry to one of the enchanting islands, then end your trip with a pint once back in Baltimore at one of the fine pubs. There are lot's of things to do here and I highly recommend it!
And there is our place in our own enchanting garden by the chiminea where we will treat you to a glass of Pims, a classic English cocktail.
